IMF Board 'Generally Agreed' Crypto Shouldn't Be Legal Tender. Outright crypto bans aren’t ideal but shouldn’t be ruled out, the International Monetary Fund leadership said: “Directors generally agreed that crypto assets should not be granted official currency or legal tender status in order to safeguard monetary sovereignty and stability....Directors agreed that strict bans are not the first-best option, but that targeted restrictions could apply to limit crypto risks, though some board members think outright bans should not be ruled out. The growing adoption of crypto assets in some countries, the extra-territorial nature of crypto assets and its providers, as well as the increasing interlinkages with the financial system, motivate the need for a comprehensive, consistent, and coordinated response.

FSB report on the financial stability risks of decentralised finance

The report finds that while the processes to provide services are, in many cases novel, DeFi does not differ substantially from traditional finance in the functions it performs or the vulnerabilities to which it is exposed. DeFi’s specific features may result in some of these vulnerabilities- such as operational fragilities, liquidity and maturity mismatches, leverage and interconnectedness – playing out at times differently than in traditional finance.  Furthermore, the fact that crypto-assets underpinning much of DeFi lack inherent value and are highly volatile magnifies the impact of these vulnerabilities when they materialise.

The SEC is the federal agency responsible for regulating the U.S. securities markets, protecting investors, and enforcing the federal securities laws. In that capacity, the SEC is formally investigating whether the Debtors and others violated the anti-fraud, registration, and other provisions of the federal securities laws. Recent news has highlighted what can go wrong when crypto platforms fail to ensure adequate safeguards over customer assets. For Account Holders, there is perhaps no more important issue.

Fir Tree Comments on Grayscale’s Latest Excuse to Obstruct Shareholder Redemptions: “For over seven years, Grayscale has pointed to the SEC’s Regulation M as the primary reason it cannot provide shareholder redemptions. However, ever since we filed our books-and-records case last year, Grayscale began backpedaling by admitting in its year-end investor letter—and again during its recent Twitter Spaces—that Reg M applies only when GBTC is simultaneously creating and redeeming shares. Simply put, Reg M does not prevent Grayscale from allowing shareholder redemptions and Grayscale knows it."
