JDSU Captures 2006 R&D 100 Award
Innovative Photonic Power Product Honored As One of the Most Technologically Significant Products of 2006
MILPITAS, Calif., September 26, 2006 – JDSU, the leading enabler of broadband and optical innovation, is the recipient of R&D Magazine’s 2006 R&D 100 Award for its High-Power Optical Data (HiPOD) system that delivers power and data over fiber. JDSU’s photonic power solution is a revolutionary alternative to existing power delivery options, delivering power over a fiber optic cable in lieu of copper wiring or batteries.
Heralded as “The Oscars of Invention” by the Chicago Tribune, the R&D 100 Awards program honors significant commercial promise in products, materials, or processes developed by the international research and development community. Past R&D Top 100 honorees include HDTV (1998), the Kodak® Photo CD (1991), the liquid crystal display (1980), the fax machine (1975), and the automated teller machine (1973). R&D Magazine uses technical experts to judge the submissions and has issued the Top 100 Award annually since 1963.
“We are extremely proud to be included in the company of the prestigious recipients of the R&D 100 award,” said Jan Gustav-Werthen, director of engineering for JDSU’s Photonic Power systems group. “In many cases our product offers an entirely new solution to an existing problem, and the recognition for our innovation is truly an honor and a wonderful motivator for our team.”
JDSU’s HiPOD technology harnesses the power of light to deliver up to 5 watts of electrical power over fiber and drive remote electronics and provide bi-directional communications at distances of 500 meters. Fiber is already the medium of choice in many industries for data transmission, but in several cases it’s becoming the best option for power delivery as well. There is significant potential for HiPOD systems to power electronics in a wide array of industries in a manner that ensures faster installations with greater personnel safety and no detrimental impact to the environment. Specific benefits of HiPOD technology include:
* Environmental - Impervious to RF and magnetic fields, lighting strikes, or electromagnetic pulses
* Emissions - Interference-free power source
* Physical - Far lighter and less cumbersome than copper, especially over longer distances
* Safety - Safer than copper in applications where excess heat or sparking may cause harm
HiPOD technology is currently being used to replace copper cable and batteries as the power source for sensors, gauges, and actuators in industrial, energy, aerospace, defense and medical applications. Over 10,000 photovoltaic power converters (PPC), the core optical-to-electrical conversion technology of HiPOD, are deployed worldwide. PPC technology permitsremote electronics to be powered by fiber over longer distances such as tower-mounted installations for cellular and digital TV relay and for electric power metering and protection. It could also prove particularly useful for underground exploration. In medical applications, the isolated power allows the operation of devices inside strong magnetic fields such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

JDSU Selected by Shanghai China Telecom for IPTV Installation and QoS Assurance
Milpitas, California, and Shanghai, September 27, 2006 – JDSU today announced it has been selected by Shanghai China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom), the incumbent telecommunications carrier for China, to ensure the installation, maintenance and monitoring of its IPTV services. China Telecom purchased multiple units of JDSU’s HST-3000 IP Video test suite with ADSL2+ options and the JDSU QT-200 xDSL and Triple-Play Probe. Both products will be on display at IPTV World Forum Asia 06 in Shanghai, September 27-29 (booths 42-43).
“An IPTV test and monitoring system is critical and required for IPTV business deployment and quality of service (QoS) assurance,” said Mr. Yu Lifeng, assistant CTO for Shanghai China Telecom and director of the Shanghai IPTV Project. “During the Shanghai China Telecom IPTV system trial, JDSU has provided valuable experience on IPTV testing and IPTV QoS monitoring as well as excellent support.”
Combined, the HST-3000 and QT-200 platforms provide a total solution as required by China Telecom for ensuring IPTV QoS. These requirements include installing, maintaining and monitoring IPTV services and broadly reducing IPTV mean-time-to-repair (MTTR).
“China Telecom wanted a partner to help provide expanded digital video test solutions and JDSU is excited to be chosen,” said John J. Jones IV, JDSU’s vice president of sales and services for the Asia Pacific region. “China Telecom’s selection of JDSU underscores the leadership reputation that our products enjoy in the IPTV and triple-play test market, including technologies carried over copper – providing for a truly all-in-one solution.”
About the JDSU Products
The JDSU HST-3000 meets the test applications required by field technicians responsible for access network service installation and maintenance. It is designed to provide maximum flexibility, through software options and field swappable “service interface modules” or SIMs, to meet specific work group needs. The HST-3000 can be easily upgraded as technology evolves and its automation features improve work force efficiency in the more complex environment of triple-play service support.
The JDSU QT-200, part of the company’s NetComplete service assurance offerings, is a Web-based, open solution both in terms of standards (UNIX/Linux, XML, web-based, ETSI, ANSI, etc.) as well as emerging technologies and customer needs (IPTV, Voice over IP and ATM, G.SHDSL, VDSL, ADSL2). The solution integrates copper testing (narrowband and wideband) as well as triple-play services testing. addressing both customer premise and DSL network (DSLAM, ATM/Ethernet backbone, BAS, Radius Servers, and ISPs) issues.

Also, ich persönlich halte ja gar nix davon, aber das ist nur meine Meinung.
