Connecting Japan to the world with Rakuten Global Express

With some 57,000 merchants and over 360 million products ready to be shipped anywhere in the country, Rakuten Ichiba is the destination of choice for many online shoppers in Japan.

But what about the rest of the world? Enter Rakuten Global Express (RGX).

“RGX is an international shipping service,” explains Miyu Nakajima of Rakuten’s cross-border trading business. “You can shop on Rakuten Ichiba or any other Japanese EC mall, and we provide international shipping to overseas users.”

It is through RGX that Rakuten is looking to match global demand for Japanese products with supply from Japanese merchants – Rakuten or otherwise – who require assistance with the complexities of international shipping logistics.

“Japanese products are very popular around the world for their high quality and good design,” Nakajima says. “However, merchants in Japan often do not have the skills or knowledge on handling international orders, global shipping and other important matters such as customer support.”

Nakajima and her team have worked to make the transaction experience as simple as possible for both parties.

“We provide the user with a warehouse address for shopping, which they can use in place of their overseas address,” she explains. “For merchants, it’s a very domestic transaction – they are shipping to a warehouse address in Japan, so the handling itself is almost the same as when selling to Japanese customers.”

The purchased products are processed for shipping at Rakuten’s warehouse in Kawasaki city, just south of Tokyo.

“We combine items bought from different merchants into one box and provide support with operations for export, such as issuing invoices and packing. Then we send them to our overseas users directly.”

Goods from Japan are in demand

Today, RGX ships to over 80 countries and regions across the globe and enjoys particular popularity in Asia and the United States. Nakajima says that the platform is a popular way to seek out niche products that have not made it to global markets.

Especially in Asian countries, Japanese products are already popular, so those products that everyone wants to purchase already have offline stores in local areas,” she explains. “Through RGX, users can purchase very niche items, such as hobby or anime goods. Fashion, too, can be very unique – everyone has their own style which can be very different from what is available locally.”

This demand for unique products drives how Nakajima and her team promote their platform: “That is why we are focusing on niche products, such as local sake. These unique products can be very popular compared to what is available in local stores overseas.”

In other regions, well-maintained Japanese second-hand branded goods enjoy significant popularity. Additionally, Nakajima highlights a love of Japanese pop culture in certain European countries: “In France, Japanese culture is very popular – comics, anime, cosplay. While this may be a niche market, dedicated fans are eager to purchase these items.”

Telco cloud is what provides the flexibility and scalability needed for future competitiveness

Telco Cloud or Public Cloud?

Distinguishing between telco cloud and public cloud is important. They are entirely different and built to solve different problems. Whereas public cloud centralizes compute into a few massive data centers, telco cloud distributes compute in thousands of small data centers spread geographically close to where processing is needed at each base station. This telco cloud is what provides the flexibility and scalability needed for future competitiveness.

We spend a lot of time talking with our customers about the value of telco cloud and differentiators from public cloud as we feel that MNOs need to cut costs significantly to compete, and a software-based network built on edge-cloud servers is a critical step.

The report reflects this value by exploring the question: “Is 2023 the year a new phase of telco cloud begins?” Bamforth notes 11 telcos that are telco cloud first movers. These MNOs have embraced telco cloud to support three workloads in:

Open RAN

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) services

Distributed core network functions.

As a result of its nationwide Open RAN-based 4G and 5G networks in Japan, Rakuten Mobile is the telco cloud deployment leader with nearly 57,000 edge cloud sites – three times as many sites as the next MNO in the report.

Cabify and Iberdrola Build Electric Car Future

By Lisa Zeffertt 01 August 2023

Iberdrola signs a deal with Cabify with discounted recharging of Cabify’s electric cars in a bid to promote the electrification of transport services in Spain.

Iberdrola and Cabify have reached a strategic agreement to promote renewable energy in the self-employed VTC and taxi driver sector, making it easier for drivers to access Iberdrola’s public charging infrastructure.

The four-year agreement will offer discounts at more than 2,200 charging points throughout the country with a guarantee that electricity is 100% renewable. In addition, drivers will have special prices for private recharging equipment for home installation.

We believe strongly in the telco cloud as a way for MNOs to reset their cost model and build a network that will deliver next generation services.

Symcloud has enabled Rakuten Mobile to deploy the world's first E2E cloud-native, fully containerized 5G network, where VMs on CNP ran 30% faster than legacy OpenStack. Symcloud saved Rakuten Mobile 50% on capex compared to traditional deployments, including 70% opex savings for infrastructure preparation and reducing tasks to 4 minutes, rather than months.

The edge cloud is being built right now and 2023 could be the year that it reaches “escape velocity,” according to the report. We believe strongly in the telco cloud as a way for MNOs to reset their cost model and build a network that will deliver next generation services.

Rakuten Rakuten Mobile Surpasses 5 Million Mobile Carrier Service Subscribers
Tokyo, August 28, 2023 – Rakuten Mobile, Inc. today announced that the number of subscribers for its mobile carrier service has surpassed 5 million as of August 28, 2023.

Since the full-scale launch of its mobile carrier service in April 2020, Rakuten Mobile has continued on its mission to democratize the mobile industry, offering an affordable and simple service plan while expanding the Rakuten network area through the build-out of base stations and roaming agreements. Since January of this year, Rakuten Mobile has also offered simple-to-use service plans for business customers through the Rakuten Mobile Business Plan, as the company takes its mission to the corporate mobile industry.

In addition, the company has focused on expanding its range of services in order to enhance the customer experience. These initiatives include the Rakuten SAIKYO Plan (Data Type), which allows customers to start using the service in as little as three minutes, and the introduction of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) One-Stop system that eliminates the need for customers to issue their own MNP reservation number when switching mobile phone carriers.

The Rakuten SAIKYO Plan – available since June 2023 – does away with the previous limit on high-speed data capacity in the domestic roaming partner network area, offering unlimited high-speed data usage in network areas nationwide with a 99.9% 4G population coverage ratio, including both the Rakuten network area and the domestic roaming partner network area.

As with the previous Rakuten UN-LIMIT VII plan, it features a simple fee structure that flexibly adjusts in line with data usage. Monthly plan fees range from 980 yen (1,078 yen including tax) for monthly data usage of up to 3GB, 1,980 yen (2,178 yen including tax) for usage of more than 3GB and up to 20GB, and 2,980 yen (3,278 yen including tax) for unlimited usage over 20GB. In addition, with the Rakuten Link app available exclusively to plan subscribers, users can make domestic calls and send and receive SMS messages for free*6. With the launch of the beta version of Rakuten Link Desktop, customers can also enjoy select Rakuten Link features on their personal computer from August 2023.

Made in Japan, big in France: A look at the most popular Japanese movies, manga and more for French consumers

Bonjour and Konnichiwa! In recent years, there has been an undeniable surge in the appreciation of all things Japanese in France, ranging from books, films, television series to video games and traditional arts. Rakuten France, Rakuten Viki, Rakuten TV and Rakuten Kobo recently teamed up and conducted research on consumer behavior in the fascinating realm of Japanese entertainment and culture, as seen through the discerning eyes of the French.

Manga – A thriving realm of Japanese pop culture

The growth of manga in France has been nothing short of spectacular, with a remarkable 31% increase in 2022 compared to 2019. Manga books account for a significant portion of total sales, with iconic series like “One Piece” making up 5% of the books sold.

While Manga-related books make up a whopping 98% of sales in France, the French passion for Japanese culture extends beyond this genre. Novels and culinary books have carved out their place in the hearts of readers, offering them a chance to explore and savor the richness of the land of the rising sun.
Exploring Japanese series and movies
French enthusiasm for Japanese television series is on the rise too, further affirming the country’s deep fondness for Japanese culture.

The fictional romance series “Silent” has soared to the top as the most-watched Japanese series on Viki worldwide, while in France, “My Beautiful Man,” a drama based on a manga, has won over viewers, highlighting the growing attachment of the French audience to the Boys Love (BL) genre.
Rakuten TV, the go-to platform for French cinephiles, has witnessed a genuine passion for Japanese films. “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” become the most-watched Japanese film on the platform across Europe. In France, “Belle,” a captivating virtual crossover between Beauty and the Beast, has enthralled audiences, solidifying Japanese content’s position as a favorite on Rakuten TV.
Embracing Japanese games

French consumers have developed a profound fondness for Japanese games including playing cards and video games, forging a passionate relationship with these interactive forms of entertainment and a dedicated fanbase eagerly awaits each new release.

Notably, the beloved franchise “Pokemon” dominated the card-playing category with an impressive 62.8%, while 18% of Japanese game franchises sold come from Nintendo’s legendary “Mario” franchise.

The unwavering rise of Japanese entertainment in the French cultural landscape is a testament to the enduring love and fascination the French hold for Japan. Rakuten continues to be the driving force behind this cultural exchange, making sure that the spirit of Japan continues to blossom on French soil. So whether you are a die-hard manga enthusiast, a J-drama lover or a Japanese cinema buff, Rakuten has something special in store for you to revel in the magic of Japan’s vibrant culture.

Rakuten Card’s Annual Shopping Gross Transaction Value Surpasses 20 Trillion Yen for Most Recent 12-Month Period

Tokyo, September 1, 2023 - Rakuten Card Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rakuten Group, Inc., today announced that Rakuten Card’s annual shopping gross transaction value (GTV) surpassed 20 trillion yen for the 12-month period running from August 2022 to July 2023.

Cashless payments have been gaining popularity in markets around the world in recent years. The Japanese market reached a cashless payment ratio of 36.0% in 2022, representing a value of 111 trillion yen. Among the cashless payment options available, credit card payments are leading the cashless renaissance in Japan, with the total amount of credit card payments rising to 93.8 trillion yen (up 12.8 trillion yen year-on-year (YoY), a 15.8% increase) last year.

Rakuten Card’s shopping GTV has increased due to the steadily growing number of Rakuten Cards issued – including cardholders with two cards – as well as increasing usage of Rakuten Card both in Rakuten Group services, such as Rakuten Ichiba and the cashless payment app Rakuten Pay, and outside the Group. The post-pandemic recovery in travel-related services and restaurant consumption both in and outside the Rakuten Group has also contributed to growth. In addition, the pandemic-fueled shift towards cashless payments driven by the increased demand for contactless transactions has continued, leading Rakuten Card to be widely used for everyday shopping. As a result, Rakuten Card’s annual shopping GTV for the most recent 12-month period from August 2022 to July 2023 surpassed 20 trillion yen, achieving a growth rate of more than 20% compared to the same period one year earlier (August 2021 to July 2022).

As a way of thanking cardholders for their patronage which has directly led to this record growth, Rakuten Card has launched a dedicated page on its official website. The page provides information on how to use the Rakuten Card app and various other Rakuten Group services, as well as customer testimonials and other highlights from Rakuten Cardholders.

Since launching in July 2005, Rakuten Card has worked to promote cross-use with various Rakuten Group services and drive the further proliferation of cashless payments both inside and outside the Group. Rakuten Card serves as the heart of the cashless payment services provided by the Rakuten Group, offering a full lineup of payment options that cater to customers' lifestyles, including smartphone payments with Rakuten Pay and e-money with Rakuten Edy. Additionally, the company has strengthened its collaborations with Rakuten Bank, Rakuten Securities, Rakuten Insurance, Rakuten Payment and other Fintech services provided by Rakuten in order to build and support the expansion of the robust Rakuten Ecosystem.

Moving forward, Rakuten Card will continue to enhance its credit card services and features, aiming to make financial services more convenient, user-friendly and readily accessible in order to deliver even greater levels of customer satisfaction.
