- und daher habe ich mir nach dem Einstieg bei Alibaba, die inzwischem mehr als 20% gut gemacht haben, auch einige Rakutens gekauft.

Look Out Amazon, Here Comes...Rakuten?
Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Ebates for $1 billion.

The acquisition, which Rakuten hinted at last week, is part of the Japanese company’s push to grow its base beyond its domestic market and hopefully, become a global player. Having made some $1.2 billion acquisitions to date along these lines, this is Rakuten’s most ambitious move to date.

However, investors are dubious that the company can absorb yet another foreign acquisition, much less one the size of Ebates, despite Rakuten’s strong cash position.
Then there is the ever-present Amazon, which dominates the e-commerce market in the U.S. Few believe it will falter in the face of Chinese giant Alibaba, much less a Rakuten-Ebates combo.

Rakuten Goes Forth

Not surprisingly, Rakuten says it is undaunted. For starters, it has assembled a very interesting mix of acquisitions. There is messaging app Viber, which it purchased for $900 million in February, the Canadian ebook offering Kobo, Spanish video service Wuaki.tv, Viki, a digital content platform and Buy.com.
Now it has picked up Ebates.

Rakuten Mobile Network Performance Shines Through in Study Comparing Major City Networks Around the Globe: umlaut report

JUNE 8, 2021

Mobile networks are undergoing a significant transformation, with a movement away from the closed, proprietary systems of legacy networks to more open, efficient and flexible systems known in the industry as Open RAN.

ON OVERALL PERFORMANCE, RAKUTEN MOBILE’S OPEN RAN NETWORK IN TOKYO SCORED 920 POINTS OUT OF 1,000 FOR A “VERY GOOD” RATING.

In Open RAN, the interfaces and protocols between the different parts of the mobile RAN (radio access network) are open, standardized and interoperable, allowing the network to be built with hardware and software from different vendors. It offers mobile network operators the freedom to choose hardware and software functions from their preferred vendors – reducing costs, increasing flexibility and offering freedom from the traditional approach of vendor lock-in.

While these characteristics alone are already piquing the interest of mobile network operators around the globe, there is still the question of how networks built on Open RAN standards perform compared to legacy networks. Rakuten Mobile is the world’s first and currently the only nation-wide commercial-scale network built entirely on Open RAN standards. A recent report by independent analyst firm umlaut addresses those performance questions head-on by comparing Rakuten Mobile data to that of operators in major cities around the world – and the outlook is decidedly positive.

ON THE NETWORK SPEED SIDE, RAKUTEN MOBILE’S NETWORK IN TOKYO RECEIVED THE HIGHEST RATING AMONG THE CITIES IN THE COMPARISON.

umlaut made an independent review of Rakuten Mobile’s 4G Open RAN mobile network in Japan and compared its performance in Tokyo with mobile networks in other large, densely populated cities. Network performance was calculated based on umlaut’s highly regarded methodology, with ratings given as “umlaut scores.” The report focuses on Rakuten Mobile’s own network, excluding data on performance for users on its roaming partner’s network.

With leading scores on network speed and a high overall ranking, Rakuten Mobile’s network performance clearly demonstrates that not only are the concerns raised about performance unfounded but that Open RAN offers the potential to bring disruptive innovation and efficiencies to mobile operators worldwide, transforming the way operators build networks and deliver services to customers.

Article | PDF (4 pages) | Automated Assurance| Service Design and Orchestration| Network Automation and Orchestration

"The introduction of digital infrastructures and the need to accelerate service innovation and deliver superior digital experiences is placing unprecedented pressure on operations."

Communications service providers (CSPs) worldwide are preparing for the 5G era by implementing a multi-pronged transformation journey that encompasses all parts of their businesses, including offering digital services, creating a digital experience and deploying virtualised networks. The transformation towards a fully digital, 5G business is happening at the same time as CSPs continue to serve customers with networks, products and systems developed in an earlier era. A 5G digital operations platform is an important part of CSPs’ preparations for the 5G digital era.

Open radio access networks (Open RAN) significantly enhance how mobile networks operate. The telecom industry, and especially the RAN segment, is several years behind the innovation curve due to tightly integrated hardware and software from just a few vendors. Open RAN can change that.
The IT industry has long benefited from a software-centric approach and transitioned to an open model where software companies compete and innovate. Now the telecom industry is going through the same transformation in many aspects of the network, but especially in the RAN. This change began with the deployment of networks such as Rakuten Mobile in Japan and the DISH Open RAN 5G network in the US. Mobile network operators (MNOs) throughout the world, including many brownfield networks, are now trialing and deploying Open RAN.

Open RAN is part of a shift in deploying and maintaining software defined networks (SDNs) and automation. SDN approaches associated with virtualization and vendor neutrality offer new ways to manage the mobile network. Orchestration and automation play an important role in demonstrating the potential of Open RAN by reducing human intervention in maintaining the network. Long-term transformations are also occurring in the RAN, including how Open RAN will enable new 5G use cases and the overall deployment of 5G networks.

Networking experts examined Open RAN revenue surges as the industry shifts toward the open model. Meanwhile, enterprises should consider the long-term benefits of switching vendors.
In this blog roundup, two networking bloggers discussed how networking is shifting toward cloud-based and open-model networking. For example, revenue for open radio access network (Open RAN) deployment has increased five times over what it was this time last year, according to Dell'Oro Group. This is thanks to developments beyond proprietary RAN, such as open source RAN and public or carrier cloud deployment.

As more telecom operators move toward Open RAN deployment, the shift has reflected in revenue. Stefan Pongratz, vice president at Dell'Oro Group, wrote in a blog post how estimates showed Open RAN revenue has increased five times year over year in the first quarter of 2021 alone. Much of this increase is owed to operators in the Asia-Pacific region, Pongratz said, and Japanese operators, such as Rakuten, are optimistic about the benefits Open RAN will create in the industry.

Macro deployments are the largest source of revenue for Open RAN. According to Pongratz, the revenue numbers reflect "the state of the overall RAN market and the current focus by operators deploying Open RAN." In addition to the large dominance of macro deployments, Open RAN small cell investment is also increasing.

Big names like Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and ZTE continue to lead the massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) RAN market. But Open RAN supporters believe smaller RAN vendors still have an opportunity to join the massive MIMO market because the industry is shifting toward the need for wider bandwidths. This will provide a "window of opportunity for new entrants," Pongratz wrote.

However, this would have never happened without 1) Japan’s MIC decision in 2018 to add a fourth player and 2) the strong cooperation between Japan and the U.S. on 5G open RAN and 6G. As a result, the whole Japanese ecosystem ranging from service providers to network equipment and component vendors is on the open RAN and open vRAN board and paving the way for a strong international expansion. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the new entrant DISH is the only service provider on board so far and unfortunately this is not enough to strengthen the developing domestic ecosystem, isn’t it ironic? At least, the heavy presence of U.S. suppliers in Rakuten Mobile’s network and NTT DOCOMO’s 5G open vRAN ecosystem offers solid consolation.

Open RAN Policy Coalition Executive Director Diane Rinaldo recently pointed out, the legislation "recognizes the importance of open RAN in establishing supply chain resiliency and supporting innovation."

More specifically, the legislation allocates up to $1.5 billion for open RAN research and development, as well as $500 million for semiconductor work related to open RAN. Airspan is one of a number of US companies – including JMA Wireless, Mavenir, Parallel Wireless and Altiostar – hoping to cash in on that spending.

Open to the open RAN opportunity

More broadly, Airspan is hoping a confluence of factors around open RAN will give it a bigger slice of the global wireless opportunity. First, a number of wireless network operators around the globe – both new and established – are hoping to leverage open RAN technologies to add new suppliers into their networks and to lower prices. Separately, lawmakers including those in the US are hoping open RAN can foster domestic 5G suppliers and create a bulwark against the threat of Chinese espionage they believe is embodied in vendors like Huawei and ZTE.

Some financial analysts believe Airspan is well positioned.

"In a world where network providers ZTE and Huawei have been placed on restricted lists, the want to do business with US-based companies has never been stronger and Airspan is the only maker of complete hardware and software systems," argued the analysts at D.A. Davidson & Co. in a recent note to investors. They issued a "buy" rating on NBA's shares in anticipation of the close of its transaction with Airspan.

Although the analysts warned that Airspan continues to rely on business from a handful of major mobile network operators – fully 78% of the company's revenues come from just three customers, including top customer Rakuten – they nonetheless see opportunity.
