Let me report on the progress that we made so far. So as I have and have been described last September in a single month, the monthly cost was maximum. It was JPY39 billion, and it has been reduced or it will be reduced by JPY15 billion. So various, of course programs initiatives are implemented. The roaming, of course, cost is one thing. But of course, opening a base station and the construction costs in terms of the outsourcing logistics and human personnel costs, these details. accumulating these areas, we are already underway to reduce the cost. And on top of the customer acquisition cost, we have been reserved utilizing TV commercial and also unperforming shops have been closed. So by doing so, at this time, we are strengthening our cost reduction effort and already this year.

So in near future, probably in 1 or 2 weeks, so 5 million subscriber would be possible to achieve. We are quite near to that. And another highlight here is the Rakuten Group, more than – we have more than 900,000 clients and how to empower those clients were the Ichiba business and the travel or the advertisement revenue and then we have been contributing using those powers and to the other clients low price and easy to use and the corporate agreement, we want to sell this B2B, the contract, and we are targeting B2B subscription target 1 million by the end of this year.

Brazilian regulator Anatel has signed an agreement with the Japanese government focused on open RAN, with the goal of increasing deployments of the technology in Brazil and developing new business opportunities between the countries.

The deal will see the partners share knowledge relating to open RAN such as spectrum policies, carry out tests, and collaborate with other countries. Anatel chief Carlos Baigorri described open RAN as an “opportunity for Brazilian industry” as the increased range of suppliers and disaggregation of network equipment would make the market more competitive.

Sharad Sriwastawa about Rakuten Symphony
I have been part of RMIC since inception. I was deeply involved in all the acquisitions and the formation of Symphony. And of course, as RMIC, I have been the biggest customer for Symphony and very much familiar with all the product line. Now, with this new position in Symphony, I would hope to bring the end-to-end delivery and operations experience to play, which will actually benefit our end customer and indirectly will help us to increase the revenue.

We have closed quarter of strong progress in both product development and customer acquisition across all business segments. Some of our key highlights for the past quarter include, on the cloud side, strong traction in channel partner sales for both SIM cloud storage and SIM cloud platform products. Among others, we secured a deal with the digital media company in U.S., successfully deploying SIM cloud storage in many states there. In addition, we closed the global deal with a private 5G channel partner for which we will be providing the underlying cloud platform.

On the RAN side, the major focus has been maturing the product to make it brownfield in [Technical Difficulty] to cater more than thousands of new requirements for brownfield operations. And in this quarter, most of it has been achieved. And in next quarter, we will be doing the trial with one of the Tier 1 operators.

On the OSS/BSS BU side, we have successfully expanded our footprint of our site manager in U.S., and now we have more than 3,000 monthly active users, which we plan to increase to 6,000 in the coming quarter.

On the Internet services, we have been finalizing our key B2B contracts with prominent B-sellers in both Japan and Korea for Rakuten Drive. And regarding Z-pass [ph], we have added a significant number of partners and customers to grow our ARR to 3.2 million in the past quarter.

We are working to get our ORAN software ready to concur the massive global brownfield opportunity. Our proven ORAN maturity in both 4G and 5G is based on more than 25 global successful global POCs and field trials. Alongside, large-scale commercial deployments, of course in Rakuten Mobile and 1&1 in Germany. Today, Rakuten Symphony is the leading provider of ORAN software to cater to the complex requirements of large brownfield environments. Our strategy to conquer the brownfield space is based on two phases. First, to reach future parity, which I said we are almost there, and the commercial deployment of ORAN with one Tier 1 operator. And then after that, we will scale it for ORAN global footprint by engaging for the brownfield opportunities.

In Q2, we could achieve $72 million, mainly driven by delivery with our existing global customers. Y-o-Y, this represents a decrease of 18.5%, mainly due to the seasonality and lumpy nature of large B2B revenues. We expect a significant revenue increase in the next two quarters along with delivery of major milestones with our anchor customers. Our key financial goal remains to achieve profitability.
Last week we were in Rakuten Optimism, we announced that we have signed a memorandum of understanding with VEON. We will start exploring cooperation in the Ukraine with the goal of accelerating the reconstruction of the country’s infrastructure through collaboration on open radio access network and digital services.

And the other factor is the overall domestic EC business, where are we against the other competitors. So, as you can see here, the other competitors are only growing by one digit. And at the same timing, we were able to grow 12.3%, a very robust growth having attained by us. And at the same time, in areas of fashion compared to ZOZO, the size is 2.5-fold, inclusive of merchant, Rakuten Fashion inclusive of that is 2.5-fold growth greater, and JPY1.1 trillion, we will soon be able to achieve. In other words, on this side still, we are growing by 9% year-on-year.

Rakuten Advertising is launching an affiliate-inspired version of First-Party Data Tech from publishers

Affiliate marketing has long existed in its own strange silo.

It can’t be targeted to specific users and it’s hard to sell on a CPM basis, meaning programmatic isn’t a good fit.

But increasingly, the marketers who control affiliate investing are also buying CTV, social media, and search. And “they’re used to identifying and acquiring the publisher’s audience,” said Anthony Capano, Rakuten Advertising’s general manager for North America.

On Tuesday, Rakuten Advertising announced the launch of Audience Engine, an optimization product that treats affiliate more like search and social media. In other words, addressable partner.

With Audience Engine, Rakuten Advertising enters a new world of first-party publisher data and embracing online shopping trends.

In practice, Capano said, advertisers can set their hiring rates and commission structures for specific audience goals or types of audience segments.

Another benefit to advertisers is that while advertising with Amazon or Walmart drives sales to Amazon or Walmart, the affiliate channel sends people back to the buyer’s own site.

Rakuten and the publishers in the Audience Engine program will drive traffic – and valuable first-hand customer data – back to the brand.

“One great thing about the affiliate industry is that it is the only transparent channel and therefore low risk,” said Capano.

The product requires advertisers to upload their data to Rakuten Advertising. But Rakuten also needs publishers to bring their data server-side so that it can be compared with advertiser data and Rakuten data in a privacy-compliant manner.

Audience Engine public launch partners include Dealmoon, Slickdeals, and 55Haitao. Dealmoon and 55Haitao are both Chinese online discount and cashback sites. Slickdeals is the same, but based in Las Vegas.

All three publishers have pre-existing deals with Rakuten Advertising.

New partnership with Google Cloud enables stateful applications to run on edge servers

By Partha Seetala President, Cloud Business Unit Rakuten Symphony

August 18, 2023

I have talked about “distributed stateful edge” to describe what I think is the next big breakthrough in edge computing use cases. And, thanks to a partnership between Rakuten Symphony and Google Cloud, customers now have a cloud-native platform that can support stateful applications, such as those that depend on databases, message queues and AI/ML pipelines.

A breakthrough in the distributed stateful edge

Working as partners, Rakuten Symphony Symcloud (formerly Robin.io) and Google Cloud have made a breakthrough in the distributed stateful edge by delivering a cloud-native platform that includes persistent storage needed to support stateful applications.

This partnership with Google Cloud enables a revolution in how cloud computing is carried out at the edge. Many large retailers and organizations with large branch office operations have spent the last decade converting their branch office applications to the cloud, however, the need for edge computing is becoming more relevant as instantaneous decisions need to be taken based on location, footprint, etc. The Symcloud and Google Cloud solution offers edge computing capabilities to meet the desired outcome. Consolidation of multiple legacy applications is happening, and Google Distributed Cloud Edge (GDC Edge) will have the (Anthos) Kubernetes platform to run these workloads and Symcloud software will be the underlying storage.

Now they can bring those cloud applications closer to their stores where they serve customers, keeping all the benefits of cloud-native applications without the cost of cloud services and the latency involved with transporting data to cloud data centers.

This solution will also help other companies that have built out their stateful edge networks using bare metal servers and are looking for a container-based solution that can deliver the zero-touch management and automation functionality that comes with cloud native servers.

In a two-year development project, Rakuten Symphony and Google Cloud have integrated the Symcloud Storage software-defined storage [SDS] platform into the Google GDC Edge to deliver the first cloud native container platform with persistent storage. We not only wanted our Symcloud SDS functionality to work in the Google GDC Edge environment, we wanted it to look and act like it is part of GDC Edge stack and scale.

Symcloud Storage for Kubernetes

Symcloud Storage is part of the Rakuten Symphony Symcloud product family and is a persistent storage offering for Kubernetes that is easy to deploy and manage at scale. Symcloud Storage creates an application-aware storage and data management stack. It is designed to provide grouping of storage volumes and applications into a single logical entity.

Symcloud Storage supports data persistency for stateful apps, always-on availability with self-healing, and advanced data placement for stateful apps. For ongoing data management, users have access to data snapshots, clones, back-ups, business continuity features, multi-cloud portability and other services.

Google Distributed Cloud Edge container orchestration

Google Distributed Cloud Edge is an end to end (HW and SW) container orchestration and management service for Kubernetes container-based deployments. GDC Edge allows organizations to run modern apps consistently at scale.

The platform is designed to modernize on-premises and edge infrastructure by managing Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) clusters and workloads running on virtual machines across environments for a consistent managed Kubernetes experience.

The platform simplifies the application stack, reduces the costs associated with licensing a hypervisor, and decreases time spent learning new skills.

Tight integration for simplicity and scalability

With this partnership, Rakuten Symphony continues to establish its role as an important, persistent storage component for GDC Edge deployments.

Symcloud Storage is tightly integrated with GDC Edge – to the extent that both products feel and operate like one piece of software. This makes it easy to deploy the platform and to scale it. Installation and upgrading processes are validated by Google Cloud.

The solution is pre-engineered, pre-validated and is sold through Google Cloud Marketplace as a single, integrated product. We have a joint team from both companies that are working closely on developing next-generation features so that they too will feel integrated and whole.

Support for Google Cloud AI

An advantage of this solution is that Google Distributed Cloud Edge supports artificial intelligence (AI) to provide applications with advanced capabilities such as predicting sales or operations, allowing for more precise inventory management to reduce waste, optimizing staffing and others. Retail stores can also use AI to display promotions customized to a customer’s demographics. Enterprises can also use this solution for building private cellular networks or providing the compute needed for autonomous inventory systems or other manufacturing digital optimizations.

Conclusion

Since our announcement, we’ve had a lot of conversations with customers who now have new ideas about how they can build a stateful edge applications. One major theme for retailers is leveraging the powerful onsite server to provide personalized customer experiences.

We’ll be demonstrating this solution at Google Cloud Next '23 conference from August 29-31 in San Francisco. I am looking forward to the new conversations that will be initiated by our presence at that show and invite you to visit us.
