Better than Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA):  Rakuten Super Logistics

Rakuten Super Logistics is a great alternative to Amazon FBA in 2020. The best part that we like about Rakuten Super Logistics is that you have 100% accuracy when delivering the products as it is a big problem of last parcels even with Amazon is some cases.

You also have an advantage of just 25,000 orders annually with Rakuten which is what a small business would target starting out and Amazon has just too much of requirements in this aspect.

with planning and executing superior pickup experiences.

For restaurants, timing the preparation of the food around the estimated arrival time of your customers is the key to handing off a quality product. Below, you can see how Chick-Fil-A tracks their customer’s trip to their location, then prompts the customer to click the ‘Prepare my order now’ button once they approach. By doing this, Chick-Fil-A is able to time order preparation perfectly.

But even more importantly, with Precise Location on, Chick-Fil-A is able to not only have the order available for pickup in their restaurant, they can also offer curbside pickup. Precise Location allows the store employees to know exactly where the customer is parked, so the second the order is ready, they can quickly walk it out for a faster, more seamless experience.

If Precise Location is OFF, the above experience in which a brand can be ready for the customer’s arrival will not be possible, since without the customer’s location it is impossible to determine the customer’s ETA. Often in this case, brands default to an “I’m Here” button or an SMS prompting the customer to click a link or call once they have arrived.

For retailers — especially those with vast footprints (big box, grocers, home improvement) — precise location enables employees to properly plan out their picking + packing of orders, destaging, and contactless handoffs. When you have 10s of thousands of square feet to run around to collect a large volume of orders, prioritizing orders around the ETAs of customers is vital.

This is especially the case for grocers who often pick + pack their orders, then store them in separate temperature-controlled areas, where the orders stay until the customer is approaching. Once store employees know the customer is minutes away, they run to collect the pre-packed bags from the various areas of the store, then wheel the order out to the customer in a timely manner that ensures no ice cream ever melts.

Precise Location enables retailers to not only have orders ready the second the customer arrives, but it also powers fast and seamless curbside pickup. Precise Location tells store employees your ETA so they can prepare for a safe, contactless handoff, but once you arrive on the lot, it also tells them where you are parked. This removes manual steps [customer having to tell the store where they, what car they’re in] from the experience and provides customers with a joyful pickup experience that they will want to repeat again.

Timing is everything. And when customers choose in-store or curbside pickup for their orders, THAT is the ideal time to ask customers for location. At that moment, letting customers know that having access to their precise location will enable your store to have the order ready (and warm, for example, if you are a restaurant with warm offerings) and waiting for them, will significantly increase likelihood of receiving location permission. In this use case, because customers already expressed intent to pick-up their order, you already know the experience the customer expects (fast, seamless hand off) and the value exchange in them providing their location is clear.

Developers need to understand the impact on the customer experience when a user trusts the app enough to share their precise location. Once a user gives such permission to an app, make sure to use the location data wisely to build trust and provide the best possible customer experience so they will want to repeat that experience over and over again.

Do you need help optimizing your mobile pickup experience now that iOS 14 is live?

Rakuten takes first step towards a hybrid operator/vendor telco
03 June 2020 @ 10:37

Rakuten and NEC will develop a containerized standalone (SA) 5G core network, which will become one of the first products available on the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP).

Although any news or developments coming out of Tokyo are of interest to the world nowadays, there are two very distinct elements to this announcement. Firstly, the creation of a containerized SA 5G core network, and secondly, the emergence of a hybrid telco model, where Rakuten is an operator but also a vendor, selling products to other telcos who want to embrace the open revolution.

“We are very excited to collaborate with NEC on the development of our standalone 5G core network,” said Tareq Amin, CTO of Rakuten Mobile.

The containerised SA 5G network core will be built on software source code developed by NEC, powering the standalone network launch in 2021 (theoretically). Although the product itself is not exactly revolutionary, the concept has been discussed for years, the selection of NEC is a notable one.
NEC software will be the brain of Rakuten’s network, one which is build on OpenRAN technology and virtualised components. This is a vote of confidence in the Japanese vendor, a mark of credibility in an ecosystem which is still in its embryonic days. The inclusion in one of the industry’s most ground-breaking projects certainly gives it an advantage over rivals, many of whom are attempting to justify their existence in the Open ecosystem.

The Rakuten overarching mission is one which has captured the imagination and interest from telcos around the world; an attempt to build a network entirely with ‘open’, non-proprietary technologies. Should it work, it could be a gamechanger when it comes to the telco supply chain.

The promise from Rakuten is to deploy a network cheaper than via traditional means, but also to slash operational costs. The executive team has already said it envisions a network operations team of hundreds, as opposed to thousands as per normal, which could result in saving millions each year. If these savings are transferred through to lower data tariffs, there could be a disruptive force on the horizon.

Should this gamble pay off for Rakuten, there will be considerable interest in the ‘open’ ecosystem, with NEC collecting much of the plaudits but the likes of Mavenir, Parallel Wireless, Altiostar, Red Hat, Cisco, Innoeye and Netcracker all benefitting. These companies are of course very interesting, but it is the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP) which is a more dramatic shift.

Rakuten has not been shy about his intentions to sell its ideas. It is an interesting move, as few telcos would want to sell their family jewels, and this is what the Rakuten ‘open’ network would be. This is the secret recipe, a competitive edge over rivals, but Rakuten wants to monetise this.

Rakuten and NEC plan to offer there 5G Core as a product to other 5G network operators

As there are no ITU recommendations or 3GPP specs detailing how to implement a 5G Core/5G SA network, the Rakuten-NEC 5G core could become a defacto standard. As we’ve stated many times, the 3GPP specs on 5G Core are network architecture specs that leave the various implementation choices to the implementor. And 3GPP is not even sending their 5G non-radio specs to ITU-T for consideration as future recommendations. Meanwhile, Rakuten and NEC have created a 5G “cloud native” core spec (proprietary of course) built on containers, which NEC (and likely other vendors) will implement in Rakuten’s 5G network. Rakuten and NEC plan to offer there 5G Core as a product to other 5G network operators. Telefónica could be the first customer for this 5G core product.

"The Rakuten Communications Platform for Open RAN could similarly be sold to other carriers that want to deploy an Open RAN 4G/5G network.  The catch here is that any legacy wireless carrier wanting to do so would have to support two incompatible sets of cellular infrastructure to serve its customers: 1] The traditional “closed box base stations” (from Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, ZTE, etc)  in cell towers AND 2] The new Open RAN, multi-vendor base stations using totally different hardware/software platforms which requires a significant amount of systems integration and tech support/trouble resolution.  Rakuten’s platform could, at the very least, simplify systems integration and avoid “finger pointing” when troubleshooting a failure or degraded service."

Terrific products to sell to greenfield carriers with no existing wireless infrastructure

„Both the Rakuten-NEC 5G Core and Rakuten Communications Platform for Open RAN could be terrific products to sell to greenfield carriers (with no existing wireless infrastructure).  Apparently, that’s too late for Dish Network and Reliance Jio, which claim they’re building their own “open 5G” network.  Meanwhile, India based Tech Mahindra claims it can build a complete 5G network now, which they would surely sell to would be 5G network providers, utilities, and government agencies around the world.“

Rakuten is making progress building a fourth mobile phone network in Japan and Brett said ‘the opportunity to create wealth from this effort is substantial.

‘Meanwhile, Rakuten’s core e-commerce business is growing well in the current environment which helps to provide the strong cashflows needs to fund its telecoms investment,’ he said.

Premium Streaming Revenues To Top Global Theatrical Revenue For The First Time In 2020: PwC
by Wayne Friedman , October 9, 2020

For the first time ever, revenues from global premium streaming platforms are set to soar past worldwide box-office revenues in 2020 -- and will maintain that revenue lead for the next five years.

Worldwide premium streaming video revenues are forecast to reach near $50 billion this year, according to PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) -- with global theatrical box office revenues sinking to $15 billion -- down 65% from 2019 levels -- due to COVID-19 pandemic disruptions closing many theaters worldwide for months.

Global theatrical box-office revenues a year ago pulled in $42.5 billion, according to Comscore. Worldwide streaming was around $37 billion in 2019, according to PwC.

In 2021, PwC estimates that streaming platform revenues will grow to $55 billion, with global theatrical seeing a small recovery -- up to $20 billion.

Rakuten Denki and Rakuten Mobile: top marks for competitive prices and simple service plans

Empowering customers: Rakuten Denki

Despite these substantial steps from government, after four years of liberalized electricity, just 22.6% of customers have switched away from the major providers as of July 2020. Many don’t see the point of switching services — even if prices are lower — and consider the switching process too complex and troublesome to be worth the effort.

That’s a challenge Rakuten Denki is tackling head on. Since 2018, it has been providing electricity services to household customers, offering an alternative take on utility budgeting.

Rakuten Denki has a laser focus on simplicity, a common theme among Rakuten Group services. Applications are entirely online — no faxing or posting necessary — and users can register, pay and even earn Rakuten’s famous loyalty points on their bill, all through their existing Rakuten ID.
Fees have also been simplified: Rakuten Denki has done away with the ubiquitous “basic fee” that has long mystified customers of other Japanese electricity providers, instead only charging for the exact kilowatt hours each household uses.

So far, the service has been a hit, earning the top spot among alternative electricity providers in surveys measuring customer satisfaction in the industry. Respondents to an NTT survey cited the reasonable rates, strong loyalty program and comprehensible pricing plans as chief reasons for their high level of satisfaction.

In many ways, Rakuten Denki’s strategy mirrors that of another Rakuten service made possible by regulatory reform. Allocated spectrum by the government in 2018, Rakuten Mobile took up the challenge of becoming Japan’s fourth major carrier to help break the industry’s pricing stalemate and pass back savings to Japanese consumers. It has been disrupting and revolutionizing the industry ever since.

Customers are giving both services top marks for competitive prices and simple service plans.

19.10.20 21:28

October 2020

When it launched its non-standalone 5G network on September 30, Rakuten, Japan’s newest mobile network operator (MNO) made another stride in establishing its position as a legitimate competitor to the three major incumbents: KDDI Corp’s au, NTT Docomo, and SoftBank. The operator also launched a new and upgraded service plan called “Rakuten UN-LIMIT V”, priced at 2,980 yen (US $28), the same as their original "Rakuten UN-LIMIT 2.0” plan that, according to Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani, is 71% cheaper than other 5G services in Japan.

Its previous marketing campaign (offered to attract the maximum number of subscribers), which gave mobile services free of charge to the first 3 million subscribers for a year, applies to new subscribers of Rakuten UN-LIMIT V as well.

Following this announcement, Tutela has taken stock of how Rakuten's initial network launch has shaped up.

Key findings

Rakuten users received very high quality user experience when connected to their own network as opposed to roaming on other operator’s networks. Furthermore, Rakuten users already spend the majority of their time on Rakuten’s network rather than roaming on au (its network partner) despite its recent launch.

Rakuten users experienced higher upload speeds and better latency compared to some of the other operators, which may prove to be important elements for Rakuten’s success. With the world being in a lockdown, these are critical factors for some important use-cases like gaming and uploading content on social media platforms.

Rakuten’s overall user experience was well behind the major national operators owing to its low download speeds, which are particularly noticeable when Rakuten users are using the roaming partner's network. However, the high-quality user experience provided by Rakuten’s own network — and its rate of adoption by users — suggests that so far, the O-RAN deployment is working well.
