Collaboration of Cisco with Rakuten Mobile and Altiostar

Real-World Deployments and Recognitions
While we had many demonstrations and trials of the Open vRAN solution at prominent events across the globe, the most rewarding for Cisco was the commercial deployment for Rakuten Japan in February 2019. The first-ever network that is fully virtualized from RAN to Core, leveraging mobile edge computing with end to end automation for both network and services. Cisco played a very critical role in this exciting journey alongside Rakuten and was well appreciated by the MNO emphasizing the crucial role of common and distributed telco cloud platform used to host many virtualized applications including Altiostar’s virtualized RAN applications vCU and vDU. End to end automation solution with Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) enabled instantiation of vRAN to fully operationalize a cell site in a matter of minutes with no manual intervention, helping Rakuen to scale the network in the future at a very faster rate.

In November 2018, Cisco was recognized for its 5G leadership by winning the Fierce Innovations Award for “NextGen Deployment Wireless” for its fully virtualized deployment and E2E automation with Rakuten. This was the 3rd industry award for Cisco 5G software-defined network in 2019. The first two given to Rakuten were the Light Reading Leading Lights awards for “Most Innovative Telco Cloud Strategy by an operator” and “Most Innovative Automation Strategy by an Operator.”

The Open vRAN wave is certainly building now. More and more MNOs are thinking about getting rid of legacy architectures and embrace Open vRAN.

Bharti Airtel, India’s leading MNO decided to take this path and in April this year announced its Open vRAN deployment with Cisco and Altiostar. Bharti became the first Indian Mobile Network Operator to deploy vRAN based 4G Network that is open that is seamlessly upgradeable to 5G.

Etisalat, one of the world’s leading telecom groups, announced the successful launch of Open vRAN early this year to become the first operator to adopt the technology in the Middle East. The success of this deployment was possible with the collaboration of Etisalat, Cisco, Altiostar and NEC.

Similarly, for one of its kind projects in the aviation industry, Gogo, a supplier of broadband connectivity products and services for Aviation, last year announced Cisco, Airspan, and First RF as its partners to supply elements for its air-to-ground (ATG) 5G network for use on business aviation aircraft and commercial regional jets operating within the United States and Canada.

Collaboration with WWT and Altiostar
World Wide Technology (WWT) is a technology solution provider that provides innovative technology and supply chain solutions to large public and private organizations. WWT, from their Advanced Technology Center brings integration and deployment capabilities for operators. Recently, in April 2020, World Wide Technology (WWT) announced a collaboration with Cisco and Altiostar to develop an Open vRAN blueprint and validation lab. WWT will be taking a lead role to integrate, validate, and deliver multi-vendor solutions Thus, Service Providers will be able to see the Open vRAN solution in operation, get their hands on it, and test features that they require helping faster validation and deployment.

7 octobre 2020

The publisher of e-commerce solutions Shopify integrates the Rakuten (France) marketplace
July 9, 2020

Shopify continues its offensive to become the essential platform for merchants having or targeting an online activity. The Canadian publisher of e-commerce solutions announced this July 9, 2020 to integrate the Rakuten (Rance) marketplace on its platform. The integration of the Rakuten connector aims to allow Shopify users to sell their products on the Rakuten marketplace (ex PriceMinister), which claims more than 4 million members.

Concretely, the integration of the Rakuten application into the Shopify app store, which has 4,100 applications, gives entrepreneurs and merchants access to dedicated and personalized corners with their colors. Note that the application allows all Shopify merchants (not only French) to sell on the Rakuten France market place, which has around 5,500 professional merchants.

October 2020

When it launched its non-standalone 5G network on September 30, Rakuten, Japan’s newest mobile network operator (MNO) made another stride in establishing its position as a legitimate competitor to the three major incumbents: KDDI Corp’s au, NTT Docomo, and SoftBank. The operator also launched a new and upgraded service plan called “Rakuten UN-LIMIT V”, priced at 2,980 yen (US $28), the same as their original "Rakuten UN-LIMIT 2.0” plan that, according to Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani, is 71% cheaper than other 5G services in Japan.

Its previous marketing campaign (offered to attract the maximum number of subscribers), which gave mobile services free of charge to the first 3 million subscribers for a year, applies to new subscribers of Rakuten UN-LIMIT V as well.

Following this announcement, Tutela has taken stock of how Rakuten's initial network launch has shaped up.

Key findings

Rakuten users received very high quality user experience when connected to their own network as opposed to roaming on other operator’s networks. Furthermore, Rakuten users already spend the majority of their time on Rakuten’s network rather than roaming on au (its network partner) despite its recent launch.

Rakuten users experienced higher upload speeds and better latency compared to some of the other operators, which may prove to be important elements for Rakuten’s success. With the world being in a lockdown, these are critical factors for some important use-cases like gaming and uploading content on social media platforms.

Rakuten’s overall user experience was well behind the major national operators owing to its low download speeds, which are particularly noticeable when Rakuten users are using the roaming partner's network. However, the high-quality user experience provided by Rakuten’s own network — and its rate of adoption by users — suggests that so far, the O-RAN deployment is working well.

Entgegen vielen pessimistischen Prognosen steht fest: Open Ran funktioniert.

Das bedeutet meines Erachtens:

“We have seen unprecedented growth since the pandemic — people have been reading a lot,” reports Tamblyn. “When outbreaks and lockdowns first began, we worked with governments and our publishers and retail partners to aid people in isolation, giving away over 20 million free books through our ‘Stay Home and Read’ program to those trapped at home during the pandemic.”

Sales of e-reading devices — such as the new Kobo Nia, launched in July — have also surged, with direct sales growing by a factor of 10 in some countries.

Tamblyn says that Kobo users have been reading up to 200% more than they were before the pandemic, while e-book unit sales in some countries grew around 130%. That’s in addition to the titles that were made available free. “The pandemic changed everything: ‘Stay Home and Read’ really became a movement.”

While romance and mystery novels continued to dominate sales charts during the pandemic, Tamblyn says that some new reading habits have emerged. “What we did see was an uptick in books for kids and young adults as parents encouraged children to read e-books as an alternative to other kinds of screen-time while at home.”

While the pandemic has undoubtedly played a role in Kobo’s most recent growth spurt, Tamblyn is optimistic for the future. “Like many digital businesses, I think we have seen an of acceleration of adoption. We pulled forward at least a year of customer acquisition into the space of a few months,” he says. “This is a difficult time to make predictions, but the early signs are good.”

Introduced in 2017, the Dutch implementation of Kobo Plus provided valuable data that helped bring the offering to Canada. “60 percent of the country’s Kobo Plus subscribers had never before purchased an a-la-carte e-book from Kobo,” Tamblyn reveals. “But equally surprising, since the launch of Kobo Plus in the Netherlands, the company continues to experience double-digit year-over-year sales growth for a-la-carte eBooks, alongside rapid subscription growth.”

If Canada can emulate this success, more countries could follow: “We are most definitely considering more markets for 2021.”

Open RAN investment to outpace traditional equipment by 2027

By Harry Baldock, Total Telecom
Thursday 08 October 20

A report by ABI Research says that the Open RAN-enabled radio unit investment will exceed $47 billion by 2026

A new study from ABI Research forecasts the Open RAN radio equipment market is set to flourish over the coming years, exploding to around $47 billion by 2026. This total will, for the first time, exceed the traditional RAN equipment market.

The research estimates that total CAPEX spent on outdoor radio units, including both macro and small cells, will reach around $40.7 billion, wile indoors equipment will still reach a considerable $6.7 billion. Total unit shipments are expected to reach 29.4 million.

2020 has already seen interest in Open RAN grow tremendously. The flexible, interoperable RAN components are rapidly becoming very appealing for operators, as technological advances begin to allow the new technology to challenge that of traditional RAN equipment vendors.

Earlier this week, the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) noted that Open RAN tech was now being trialled in numerous countries around the world, including Turkey, the UK, Ireland, Mozambique, South Africa, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Russia, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

ABI’s report drew special attention to greenfield players who are adopting Open RAN principles at scale, such as Japan’s Rakuten. A newcomer in the Japanese mobile market, Rakuten Mobile launched 5G last month using Open RAN architecture.

“We must take a bit of credit about what we’ve done,” said Rakuten’s CTO Tareq Amin about their use of Open RAN. “We have innovated an architecture that was proprietary, that was closed and absolutely unwilling to evolve into an open RAN platform. We have driven a discussion in the world about the necessity of open RAN architecture.”

While to date Open RAN has primarily been the realm of smaller players, the Tier-1 vendors are beginning to take notice.

“New entrants will lead the early deployment for Open RAN, but they will be increasingly challenged by tier-one vendors and system integrators for both public cellular implementations and enterprise deployment,” said Hou.

Altiostar firmly establishes Open vRAN leadership with the launch of Rakuten’s 5G Cloud-Native Network

We want to congratulate Rakuten Mobile on the launch of their 5G network in Japan powered by Altiostar’s Open Virtualized Radio Access Network (Open vRAN) software. Supporting mmWave and massive MIMO radios, the Rakuten 5G network is the first to leverage at scale a cloud-native, containerized approach to 5G networks based on microservices.

Journey to 5G
Our journey of innovation with Rakuten continues with the 5G network by further decomposing the CU into independently scalable microservices-based CU-CP & CU-UP cloud-native container network functions (CNNF). The control plane and user plane functions can scale independent of each other governed by the call model of the service provider thus leading to more efficient utilization of resources.

The container-based solution allows Rakuten to quickly reconfigure different microservices to scale and flexibly deploy containers for different use cases. This architecture will provide Rakuten with the ability to support various new 5G services and the operational simplicity for efficient scaling, new levels of automation, and reduced network costs.

The solution supports massive MIMO solutions with advanced beamforming techniques across sub-6Ghz and mmWave spectrums delivering higher spectral efficiency.

Evolution from 4G
Altiostar has been at the forefront of the movement for digital transformation of radio access networks through virtualization and disaggregation. We were the first company to have commercially deployed at scale a split CU/DU architecture based 4G open virtual RAN solution at Rakuten.

The 4G rollout at Rakuten continues at frantic pace and as of September 2020 there were more than 18,000+ macro radios on air, serving major urban centers in Japan. Field data from Rakuten’s 4G deployment has shown that Open vRAN performance meets or exceeds the industry benchmarks in terms of data speed, availability, etc.

Benefits of Open vRAN
Disaggregation of software from hardware brings the agility that is so important in today’s hyper-competitive market. With Open vRAN, service providers are assured of capital investment protection while innovation cycles continue in software, enabling continuous delivery of new few features/ functionalities.

Virtualization of RAN further extends the platform centric approach to the network edge that is so essential for breaking down the operational silos and implement unified management practices for accelerated service deployments and simplicity.

In further simplification of network architecture, the same Open vRAN software is used across all deployment models, be it is macro, micro, massive MIMO, and across different RAT types i.e. 4G & 5G. This unified approach brings unprecedented flexibility to the operations teams for network monitoring and troubleshooting.

With virtualization of RAN network functions, it is now possible to gather granular information from different software modules that paves the way for automated operations aided by artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.

Open vRAN Leadership
The announcement by Rakuten once again demonstrates continuation of thought leadership and innovation by Altiostar in the 5G domain. Rakuten has been a disruptor in the market and we look forward to continuing to work with them as partners in the journey to transform the mobile network into an open and web-scale architecture.

Rakuten Mobile says current geopolitics create opportunities for its tech

By Juan Pedro Tomás on OCTOBER 9, 20205G

New Japanese market entrant Rakuten Mobile, which is a subsidiary of e-commerce giant Rakuten, is seeing a high level of interest by multiple governments around the world for the adoption of the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP), said Tareq Amin, representative director, EVP and CTO of Rakuten Mobile during a recent roundtable with journalists.

Amin said that Rakuten Mobile is engaged in talks with government entities in the U.S., Europe and Asia to show them the potential benefits of the implementation of this technology.

“It’s really world-class performance capability delivered in a country [Japan] that is super obsessed about quality and the interest levels of governments are absolutely enormous. It is no doubt that the geopolitical atmosphere that we’re in today has created an opportunity to accelerate and advanced this technology,” Amin said.

Rakuten’s platform contains all the elements of the Rakuten Mobile network, including telco applications and software from multiple vendors, OSS and BSS systems handling customer billing and activation systems, in addition to edge computing and virtual network management functions.
RCP is aimed at offering solutions and services for the deployment of virtualized networks at speed and low cost by telecom companies, enterprises and governments around the world.

“I truly believe that we are about two years ahead, time-to-market advantage against anyone on the implementation and the architecture of a completely cloud-defined network, whether you look at large- scale public clouds or even large OEMs, we think we have done a significant amount of technology uplift to materialize this in Tokyo,” the executive added.

Rakuten Mobile recently announced the availability of its commercial 5G service in certain areas across six prefectures of Japan.

The service, initially offered via Non-Stand Alone (NSA) 5G architecture, is already available in parts of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Hokkaido, Osaka and Hyogo.

Rakuten Mobile’s President Yoshihisa Yamada recently said that the operator is expecting the 5G to be available in Japan’s all 47 prefectures by end-March 2021.

The carrier also said it expects to launch a Stand-Alone 5G network in the second quarter of 2021.
Rakuten Mobile launched mobile services in Japan in April 2020 through its end-to-end fully virtualized, cloud-native mobile network.

Rakuten Mobile’s total obligation, agreed upon with the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), is to deploy 15,787 sub-6 GHz base stations and 7,948 mmWave base stations. The carrier has agreed to deploy at least 667 sub-6 GHz and 441 mmWave base stations by the end of March 2021.

Amin said that the company would accelerate 5G deployments and noted that the physical build-out of the network is not a major concern. “The most complex part was about the technology,” he said.

The messaging app is making its way to licensed products.

License Global | Aug 13, 2020

“Rakuten Viber,” one of the world’s leading messaging apps, has signed a deal with Medialink Animation International, a subsidiary of its Hong Kong-listed company, Medialink Group, one of Asia’s biggest licensing agencies, to turn the app’s sticker characters into merchandise that Filipino users can enjoy.

“Medialink brings solid expertise, knowledge and great passion to help us take our massively successful sticker characters into the real world in the Philippines – a market with an 85 percent interest in owning ‘Viber’-branded products,” says Matan Kaufman, product marketing director, Viber. “Just knowing that ‘Viber’ fans will soon get to extend their love for Violet, LegCat and other characters in more tangible quality ways is truly exciting and a great step into deepening our relationship with our audience of over 1 billion users globally.”

Call 50 countries around the world for just $8.99 a month

A Viber Out subscription plan is an excellent solution when you need to call landlines and non-Viber mobiles in one country, but what about if you regularly call more than one country in any given month? It can get expensive buying multiple destination plans. So get a Viber Out World Plan subscription.

The worldwide subscription is an all-inclusive plan to all mobiles and landlines in 50 countries around the world, including popular destinations such as United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia and India.

The many benefits of a World Plan
The plan includes unlimited minutes per month, so you can call as many mobile or landline numbers as you need without running out of credit (fair usage policy applies).

The World Plan costs just $8.99 a month, saving you even more money than a regular subscription or credit. Even better, there are no extra costs on top of the monthly payment.

The subscription will renew automatically every month, so you don’t need to worry about getting a new one.

Now you don’t need to think twice the next time you need to call a number in a new country!
