TEMPE, Ariz., Jan 14, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- First Solar Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR), one of the world's largest solar module manufacturers and utility systems providers, has completed the acquisition of a portion of Edison Mission Group's (EMG) solar project development pipeline. The utility-scale solar projects are located in California and the Southwest.
"Acquiring the EMG development pipeline extends First Solar's leadership in the U.S. utility market," said Lisa Bodensteiner, First Solar vice president of business development for North America. "It builds on our strategy to cultivate robust and predictable module demand in utility-scale applications."
The acquisition complements and diversifies First Solar's existing portfolio of utility-scale thin film photovoltaic solar projects. First Solar's existing projects are largely sited on public land, range to 550 megawatts (MW) in size, and are mostly under contract with utilities. The EMG projects that First Solar is acquiring are sited largely on private land, range from 20 to 150MW, and are not yet contracted with utilities.
First Solar and EMG have worked together since 2008 on the EMG projects, with First Solar providing engineering, procurement and construction services while EMG was responsible for land acquisition and permitting. Now First Solar will handle all development for these projects, including permitting.
"First Solar is a good partner and the obvious purchaser of our interest in these projects which we have jointly developed," said Gerry Loughman, senior vice president of Development for EMG.
Anticipated module demand for EMG projects was included in advanced pipeline information provided to First Solar investors in December 2009. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
First Solar recently completed development and construction of its first California utility-scale solar power plant in December 2009, the 21MW AC Blythe project that was sold to NRG Energy and supplies electricity to Southern California Edison.

Das stimmt schlichtweg einfach nicht! ... Der BSW hatte offiziell eine zusätzliche Senkung von 5% zum 1. Juli 2010 vorgeschlagen! ... inoffiziell war die Solarbranche bereit gewesen 10%-12% zum 1. Juli 2010 hinzunhemen! ... Und DAS war auch der Konsens der Erwartungen der Experten! ....
Jetzt sollen die Vergütungen aber um 16%-17% fallen und bei Freiflächenanlagen (auf dem Acker) dürfte es sogar um 20% runtergehen! ... Dazu kommt dann auch noch das diese Senkungen schon 3 Monate eher kommen sollen, womit es keine "Frühjahrsbelebung" geben kann, da zwar viele noch gerne vor dem 1. April 2010 eine Anlage installieren würden, die Witterung (die in diesem Jahr bisher richtig mies ist!) dies aber nicht zulässt! ...
Deine Ausführungen das sei "weniger Senkung als erwartet" und "es sei ja alles schon längst bekannt", ist schlichtweg falsch! ... Kaum jemand hat mit solch einer kräftigen Drosselung gerechnet und schon gar nicht zum 1. April 2010!!!! ...
Und wenn du dir mal die Reaktionen der CEO´s anschaust ... Das wurde nicht so erwartet! ...

Five Photovoltaic Solar Power Plants to Be Located in PNM's Service Territory
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Jan 19, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- PNM, New Mexico's largest electric utility, has signed a contract with First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) to construct 22 megawatts (MW) AC of utility scale photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants in New Mexico.
First Solar, based in Tempe, Arizona, will construct the facilities using its advanced PV panels at five separate sites within PNM's service territory. The sites will be chosen based on cost, availability and suitability of land; the quality of a site's solar potential; environmental and permitting considerations; and level of local support.
"We are proud to have a company with First Solar's internationally recognized expertise and reputation building these facilities to help us meet the growing energy needs of our customers," said Pat Vincent-Collawn, PNM president and CEO. More than 1,800 MW of First Solar's PV panel technology has been deployed in multiple projects throughout the world.
"PNM's decision to use First Solar's panels demonstrates the value PV technology can bring to electric utilities seeking to adopt renewable energy generation," said Bruce Sohn, First Solar president. "We are pleased to be working with PNM in New Mexico, a state that has excellent solar resources and is well positioned to take advantage of clean, affordable energy."
If approved by state regulators, the 22 MW AC of new solar capacity - which, according to PNM, can produce enough power to supply 7,000 average sized New Mexico homes - would be the first contracted under the terms of an agreement PNM reached with state environmental, renewable energy and governmental organizations two weeks ago. The specifics of that plan, to be filed with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) on Jan. 25, call for a total of 45 MW of utility scale solar PV to be added to PNM's system in the 2010-2011 timeframe.
Vincent-Collawn said that sites chosen to host the solar PV facilities will be announced as they are determined. Construction on the first site is expected to start by 2011, or as soon as the PRC approves PNM's renewable plan. First Solar expects construction at all five sites to be completed by late 2011. The build-outs will create approximately 100 construction jobs. Once completed, PNM will own the sites as part of its generation portfolio to serve New Mexico customers.

Auch First Solar bekommt den Wettbewerbsdruck mehr und mehr zu spüren! First Solar haben mit Preissenkungen auf den zunehmenden Wettbewerb reagiert, um ihre Stellung in der PV-Branche behaupten zu können! ... Das macht sich allerdings auch deutlich bei der Profitabilität deutlich bemerkbar! ...
So ist die Rohertrags-Marge von 51% im Q3 auf 41% im Q4 "abgestürzt" ...
Die operative Gewinn-Marge ist von 34% auf "nur noch" 23% gefallen ...
Und die Umsatzrendite ist von 32% auf nur noch 22% gefallen ...
Das sind für "verwöhnte First Solar Aktionäre" richtig schlechte Zahlen, auch wenn diese aus Sicht eines "Normal-Sterblichen" immernoch "gigantisch" sind! ... Für "First-Solar-Verhältnisse" sind sie aber wirklich mies! ...
Und hier wird deutlich das sich auch eine First Solar der Konkurrenz entgegensetzen muß! ... Zumal die "kristalline Wafer-Technologie" durch den Preissturz beim Rohstoff Silzium stark auf die Dünnschichttechnologien (preislich) aufholen konnte! ... und das spürt jetzt auch eine First Solar! ...
Obwohl First Solar den Umsatz um 33% gegenüber dem Vorquartal steigern konnte, ist ihr Nettogewinn (aufgrund der gewährten Preisnachlässe seitens First Solar) sogar gesunken (von 153 Mio. USD auf 141 Mio. USD) ... Ein weiterer Grund waren aber auch deutlich höhere Ausgaben für den Bereich F&E ...

Partnership Highlights Promise of Photovoltaic Power in Deserts
MAINZ, Germany, Mar 16, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) on Tuesday announced that it had joined the Desertec Industrial Initiative as an Associated Partner to demonstrate the potential of photovoltaic (PV) solar technology to provide clean, sustainable energy on a vast scale by harnessing the desert sun.
A leader in utility-scale solar power plants, First Solar is the first pure PV company to join Desertec, which aims to provide a significant portion of the electricity for the Middle East and Northern Africa as well as Europe by 2050 via a network of solar and wind energy sources.

Die interministerielle Raumplanungs-Kommission (Commission Interministérielle d’Aide à la Localisation des Activités, CIALA) hat beschlossen, dem Photovoltaik Unternehmen First Solar Fördermittel für den Bau einer Produktionsanlage für Dünnschichtmodule zu gewähren, berichtet die Präfektur Bordeaux (Frankreich) in einer Pressemitteilung. First Solar erhalte rund zwei Millionen Euro Zuschuss für die Schaffung von 382 Arbeitsplätzen und für seine Investitionen in Höhe von fast 66 Millionen Euro. Die Arbeitsplätze müssen ab dem Zeitpunkt ihrer Schaffung fünf Jahre besetzt werden, die Investitionen noch fünf Jahre nach Abschluss des Programms fortdauern. Der Raumplanungs-Zuschuss ergänze die anderen Fördermaßnahmen zum Bau der Fabrik. Diese kommen von örtlichen Verbänden und dem europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung (Fonds Européen de Développement Régional, FEDER).
Das Wirtschaftsförderungs-Programm PAT unterstützt die Schaffung oder Erhaltung von Arbeitsplätzen und wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten in wirtschaftlichen Brennpunktregionen Frankreichs. Es soll Ungleichgewichte bei der Entwicklung ausgleichen, indem Unternehmensansiedlungen oder -erweiterungen in den wirtschaftlich schwächsten Gegenden des Landes gefördert werden.

New Plants in the U.S. & Vietnam to Increase Capacity by nearly 500 MW/Year
Current capacity nearly doubles to over 2.7 GW by 2012
TEMPE, Ariz., Oct 14, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) today announced plans to build two new four-line manufacturing plants that will boost the company's annual manufacturing capacity by nearly 500 MW to help meet strong demand for its advanced thin-film photovoltaic modules. The plants are expected to be built in the United States and Vietnam and completed in 2012. Each new plant will create approximately 600 green jobs and will be designed to accommodate additional production capacity. Negotiations and site assessments are ongoing in both countries and will be finalized and announced at a later date.
The new factories will further extend First Solar's previously announced capacity additions, including eight lines at its Kulim, Malaysia facility, four lines in Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany, and two lines in Blanquefort, France. Earlier this year the company also completed an expansion of its Perrysburg, Ohio, manufacturing plant, which serves as First Solar's primary hub for engineering, research and development, and employs more than 1,100 of First Solar's 1,500+ U.S.-based associates. The new plants announced today, combined with these previously announced expansions, will nearly double production capacity from 1.4 GW in 2010 to more than 2.7 GW in 2012.
"These expansions provide proximity to growing U.S. demand while supporting our roadmap to drive down the cost of clean, sustainable solar electricity," said First Solar CEO Rob Gillette. "Effective government policies provide long-term visibility and enable sustainable markets."
In addition to the increase in manufacturing employment, First Solar expects to generate over 1,000 construction jobs through the installation of solar power plants from the company's 2.2 GW North American project pipeline.
