Awareness of Calypte’s Urine-Based HIV Screening Test --
Alameda, CA – April 29, 2003 – Today, the Magic Johnson Foundation, Inc. (http://www.magicjohnson.org) and Calypte Biomedical Corporation (OTCBB: CALY) in a joint effort, announced that Earvin “Magic” Johnson will join Calypte’s Board of Directors, and that he will also play an active role in promoting global awareness of Calypte’s FDA-approved HIV-1 antibody tests for use with urine samples.
Earvin Magic Johnson stated, “At the Magic Johnson Foundation our focus is on supporting community-based organizations and developing programs that serve the health, educational and social needs of those residing in inner-city communities. In addition, over the past twelve years, the Foundation has made a strong commitment to raise awareness about several health and social concerns that threaten under-served communities.
“My decision to join the Board of Calypte represents a continuation of this commitment. When I first heard of a test for the AIDS virus that uses urine samples, I was amazed and wondered why more people didn’t know about it. I believe that the fear of a blood test is one of the biggest reasons why more people don’t get tested. Now, with Calypte’s urine test, there are no more excuses,” Johnson added.
Calypte’s screening EIA and supplemental Western Blot tests are the only two FDA-approved HIV-1 antibody tests that can be used on urine samples. When compared with existing blood-based tests, Calypte’s testing algorithms are non-invasive, easier to use, less expensive and have significantly less risk than blood-based testing, and they have 99.7% sensitivity in subjects previously identified as HIV-1 infected and 100% specificity in subjects at low risk when combined with the urine-based Western Blot supplemental test.
“We cannot envision a more ideal individual to help create awareness on a global basis about urine-based AIDS screening than Earvin “Magic” Johnson,” stated Nancy Katz, Calypte’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are deeply honored to have him as a member of our Board and believe that his involvement can increase HIV testing worldwide and decrease the spread of this disease.”

WHO Warns Asia of Wider HIV/AIDS Epidemic
MANILA, Philippines (AP) - The World Health Organization warned on Wednesday that an HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region could widen because of a rise in sexually transmitted infections, particularly among young adults.
High-risk behavior is increasing and there are more sexually transmitted infections, notably in Mongolia, the Philippines and Pacific island countries, WHO's Western Pacific office said in a statement.
Surveys in China, Malaysia and Vietnam show a rise in the percentage of intravenous drug users selling sex, and evidence suggests this is spreading HIV in the wider community, it added.
WHO's regional committee for the Western Pacific, holding its annual conference in Manila, urged greater efforts to promote condom use, needle and syringe exchange programs and expanded drug treatment to prevent HIV among intravenous drug users.
It also called for more effective partnerships among the WHO, governments and other agencies to battle the disease.
The statement said that because of promotion of condom use among prostitutes, Cambodia's sex industry accounted for only a minority - 21 percent - of the country's HIV infections last year. At one time, 80 percent to 90 percent of new cases were attributed to commercial sex.
WHO says an estimated 1.2 million people in the Western Pacific have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. There are 55,000 new full-blown AIDS cases each year and the number is projected to reach at least 120,000 by 2005.

Calypte ist zur Zeit die heißeste Aktie am Bulletin Board
Gefreut haben wir vom Biotech-Experten uns ja schon ein kleinwenig, dass wir unser Sorgenkind Calypte nicht vorschnell aufgegeben haben. So langsam wird aber sogar uns angesichts der nicht enden wollenden guten Nachrichten um Calypte Biomedical (OTC Bulletin Board: CYPT) etwas unheimlich. Erst am gestrigen Dienstag konnte unser "ehemaliges" Sorgenkind wieder mit einer guten Nachricht glänzen, die seinen Aktienkurs sogar deutlich über die 1-Dollarmarke hieven konnte und wenn die "Good News" weiterhin so sprudeln, wird der Rekonvaleszent sogar bald wieder unter den Gesunden weilen. Am Dienstag war es die Regierung des afrikanischen Landes Uganda, die den ersten Schritt machte und Calyptes Urintest grünes Licht erteilte. Dies ist der Startschuss für den Siegeszug des ersten von der FDA genehmigten Tests zum Nachweis von HI-Viren im Urin. Ab sofort kann Calypte sein Testverfahren, das aus einem Antikörper besteht, welcher HIV-1 im Urin von Infizierten aufspürt, also nach Uganda liefern.
Grundlage dieser Genehmigung sind Tests, die am Vidas National Research Institute in Uganda durchgeführt wurden und den Nutzen des HIV-1 Urintests bestätigen konnten. Dr. Benon Biaryahwawo, Direktor des Vidas National Research Institute (einer Institution ähnlich der US-amerikanischen NIH), gab in einem am 9. September 2003 an Calypte überstellten Brief bekannt, das Testverfahren hätte die Prüfung bestanden. Uganda sei nun ausreichend vorbereitet, um den Calypte Test sofort einzuführen. Schon demnächst sollen die nötigen Verträge zum Erwerb ausreichender Mengen des Tests unterzeichnet werden.
Doch Uganda ist erst eines von vielen afrikanischen Ländern, denen das AIDS Problem so langsam über den Kopf zu wachsen beginnt. Um die epidemieartige Ausbreitung des HI-Virus schnellstmöglichst unter Kontrolle zu bringen, ist ein Screening der gesamten Bevölkerung von Nöten. Dies gilt im übrigen nicht nur für Uganda, sondern für die meisten Länder Afrikas und zunehmend auch für den asiatischen Kontinent. Das Caylpte auch für seinen Test bezahlt wird, dafür sorgen im Falle von Uganda die vielen Finanzhilfen, die 2003 vom USAID, der Weltbank sowie vom "Global Fund to Fight AIDS" kommen. Und wie Calyptes Präsident Jay Oyakawa darlegte, wird das kleine Unternehmen alles tun, um seinen Test so schnell als möglich auch auf einer weltweiten Basis vermarkten zu können.
Denn AIDS ist nicht, wie so viele von uns vielleicht denken, nur ein Problem der Entwicklungsländer. Auch im Westen sind die Zahlen kaum rückläufig, auch wenn die Infektionsraten in diesen Ländern deutlich niedriger sind als in den armen Ländern der dritten Welt. Eine Chance sich weltweit als HIV-Detektionsverfahren durchzusetzen hat das Testverfahren von Calypte allemal, es birgt nämlich im Gegensatz zu den herkömmlichen Tests, die als Untersuchungsmaterial Blut verwenden, kein Ansteckungsrisiko. Und sollte die WHO demnächst noch für Calypte Stellung beziehen, dann ließe sich vielleicht sogar der Pharma-Lobby in den westlichen Ländern ein Schnäppchen schlagen.
Die Technologie von Calypte ist zwar eindrucksvoll, dennoch sollte man nicht vergessen, dass die derzeitige Marktkapitalisierung, in Anbetracht der nur $750.000 Umsatz im letzten Quartal, schon ziemlich gut bemessen ist. Also was Calypte nun braucht ist Umsatz und mit Uganda macht man nun den ersten Schritt in diese Richtung. Wer auf Sicherheit setzt, sollte aber stets ein Auge auf die "SEC Filings" des Unternehmens haben. Hellhörig sollte man als Investor werden, wenn von einer S-8 Form die Rede ist. Dieses Formular, in dem Calpyte vor einiger Zeit den Verkauf von Aktien an sogenannte Berater zu einem Discount-Preis angemeldet hatte, hat dem Unternehmen schon einmal fast den Kopf gekostet. Bleibt diese S-8 Form jedoch aus, wäre ein Aktienkurs im Bereich von $2 bis $3 nicht ungewöhnlich, bevor es dann möglicherweise zu einem kleinen Rücksetzer kommen könnte.

Ach ja Börsenfan,den Namen hatte ich mal bei einem Börsenspiel an der Schule und da ich 2. geworden bin,hab ich den mal beibehalten, damit es auch hier an der Börse klappt,aber mit Calypte kann ja nichts schiefgehen;-)
