Technology Could Loosen Hold on Traditional Cable
Equipment Market

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 2003--Charter Communications Inc.
(Nasdaq:CHTR - News) and Sony Electronics Inc. have signed a licensing agreement
for Sony's Passage(TM) technology that could eventually bring more competition to the
set-top receiver market and provide more choices and features for Charter customers.

Charter hopes to use the Passage technology to allow set-top receiver, network and
headend equipment from different companies to work together on existing digital cable
television networks. The technology could result in increased competition among
set-top manufacturers, resulting in lower prices, more features and the ability for
consumers to use the same set-top in different cities.

"With Sony's Passage technology, cable operators will have the freedom to cost
effectively introduce alternative conditional access systems into their networks, which
should encourage new manufacturers to develop new products and accelerate
innovation in the industry," said Stephen Silva, executive vice president and chief
technology officer for Charter. "Opening up the cable industry infrastructure will most
certainly foster competition and result in more choices and better services for
consumers."

"Taking consumers smoothly into the broadband network world takes three things:
compelling content and services; a wide selection of familiar, user-friendly devices from
which to access that content; and a business model that makes sense for all parties,
including consumers," said Michael Fidler, senior vice president of Sony's Digital
Platform Division of America. "Because of Charter Communications' role as an
innovator and visionary for the cable industry, today's agreement is one step -- but a
significant and strategic step -- toward achieving this goal."

Charter Chef Paul Allen ist ehemaliger Mitbegründer von Microsoft und Blutsbruder vom großen Bill!
Der (MSN) Deal mit Microsoft ist deshalb wie eine Sauerstoffdusche für datt stark gebeutelte Charter Comm. Unternehmen.
Ob es zum nachhaltigen Kursplus führen wird, da bleiben natürlich noch reichlich Fragen.
2 - 2,50 Dollar wären schon not bad, wenn der Markt mitspielt.
Mehr glaube ich nicht.

Charter to Launch HDNet & HDNet Movies Networks

Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR - News) and HDNet today announced an agreement to carry two around-the-clock, high-definition networks, HDNet and HDNet Movies. The initial deployments will be in University Park/Highland Park, Texas, located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area; and Glendale/Burbank, Calif. The agreement is the cable industry's first with HDNet and expands the growing lineup of programming now available to customers of Charter's High Definition Service.

"We are pleased to be partnering with Charter to offer HDNet's networks to their HDTV customers, now and into the future," said Mark Cuban, co-founder and president of HDNet. "Through agreements such as this one, we intend to expand HDNet's distribution and deliver the incredible HDTV experience to more viewers across the country."

"With more and more consumers purchasing high-definition televisions and demanding high-quality programming to match, Charter is proud to be the very first cable operator to offer HDNet," said Carl Vogel, Charter president and CEO. "Our partnership with HDNet will enhance our current high-definition offering and further bo customers every day."

HDNet Movies delivers a commercial-free schedule of full-length feature films converted from 35mm to high-definition, including titles from an extensive library of Warner Bros. films from a deal recently announced between HDNet and Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. HDNet Movies will feature a mix of theatrical releases, made-for-TV movies, independent films and shorts.

The HDNet channel features a variety of HDTV programming, including live sports, sitcoms, dramas, action series, documentaries, travel programs, music concerts and shows, special events, and news features including the popular HDNet World Report. HDNet also offers a selection of classic and recent television series from a recently announced deal between HDNet and Paramount.

In order to receive HDNet on Charter, customers will need to have an HDTV set and subscribe to Charter Digital Cable® and Charter High Definition Service. Charter's High Definition Service is available for a monthly incremental charge. The monthly price for HDNet has not been determined.

Sehe dem gelassen entgegen, doch ohne SL würde ich hier niemals arbeiten!
