U.S. trucking industry posts biggest jump in 13 years

Dayton Business Journal by Joe Cogliano, Senior Reporter

December was a banner month for the trucking industry.

On Tuesday, The American Trucking Associations    American Trucking Associations Latest from The Business Journals Former long-time Schneider National president and CEO diesNew truck driver rules tout safety, but companies don’t like limitationsNew truck driver rules tout safety, but companies don’t like limitations Follow this company ’ announced its truck tonnage index jumped 6.8 percent in December over the previous month — the largest month-to-month increase since January 2005 — while tonnage for the month was 10.5 percent higher than December 2010, marking the largest year-over-year gain since July 1998.

“While I’m not surprised that tonnage increased in December, I am surprised at the magnitude of the gain,” said Bob Costello, ATA Chief Economist. “Not only did truck tonnage increase due to solid manufacturing output in December, but also from some likely inventory restocking.”

ATA also reported that for all of 2011, tonnage rose 5.9 percent, the largest annual increase in 13 years.

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 67.2 percent of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods. Trucks hauled 9 billion tons of freight in 2010. Motor carriers collected $563.4 billion, or 81.2 percent of total revenue earned by all transport modes.

The Dayton area has long been a hub for trucking companies because of its central Midwest location and the intersection of Interstates 75 and 70. The industry also serves many companies that have chosen to build in the region because of the access to highways.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Posts Largest Annual Gain in 13 Years

January 24, 2012 12:00 PM

Sean McNally 703-838-1995

ARLINGTON, VA — The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index jumped 6.8% in December after rising 0.3% in November 2011. The latest gain put the SA index at 124.5 (2000=100) in December, up from the November level of 116.6.

For all of 2011, tonnage rose 5.9% over the previous year – the largest annual increase since 1998. Tonnage for the last month of the year was 10.5% higher than December 2010, the largest year-over-year gain since July 1998. November tonnage was up 6.1% over the same month last year.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 116.4 in December, which was 0.8% above the previous month.

“While I’m not surprised that tonnage increased in December, I am surprised at the magnitude of the gain,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said.   Costello noted that it was the largest month-to-month increase since January 2005.

“Not only did truck tonnage increase due to solid manufacturing output in December, but also from some likely inventory restocking. Inventories, especially at the retail level, are exceedingly lean, and I suspect that tonnage was higher than expected as the supply chain did some restocking during the month.” he said.

Note on the impact of trucking company failures on the index: Each month, ATA asks its membership the amount of tonnage each carrier hauled, including all types of freight. The indexes are calculated based on those responses. The sample includes an array of trucking companies, ranging from small fleets to multi-billion dollar carriers. When a company in the sample fails, we include its final month of operation and zero it out for the following month, with the assumption that the remaining carriers pick up that freight. As a result, it is close to a net wash and does not end up in a false increase. Nevertheless, some carriers are picking up freight from failures and it may have boosted the index. Due to our correction mentioned above however, it should be limited.

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 67.2% of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods. Trucks hauled 9 billion tons of freight in 2010.  Motor carriers collected $563.4 billion, or 81.2% of total revenue earned by all transport modes.

ATA calculates the tonnage index based on surveys from its membership and has been doing so since the 1970s. This is a preliminary figure and subject to change in the final report issued around the 10th day of the month. The report includes month-to-month and year-over-year results, relevant economic comparisons, and key financial indicators.

American Trucking Associationsis the largest national trade association for the trucking industry. Through a federation of 50 affiliated state trucking associations and industry-related conferences and councils, ATA is the voice of the industry America depends on most to move our nation’s freight. Trucking gets a big boost in December, American Trucking Associations says

Kansas City Business Journal

U.S. trucking business jumped in December — not unusual in itself, except that the jump was a big one.

“While I’m not surprised that tonnage increased in December, I am surprised at the magnitude of the gain,” Bob Costello, chief economist for the American Trucking Associations    American Trucking Associations Latest from The Business Journals U.S. trucking industry posts biggest jump in 13 yearsU.S. trucking industry posts biggest jump in 13 years U.S. trucking industry posts biggest jump in 13 years Follow this company , said in a written statement.

The month-to-month increase was the largest since January 2005.

The trade association has an index to monitor for-hire truck tonnage. The advanced, seasonally adjusted index rose 6.8 percentage points in December, coming off a 0.3 percentage-point gain in November.

The index now stands at 124.5. The year 2000 equals 100 on the index.

During all of last year, tonnage increased 5.9 percentage points compared with 2010. That’s the biggest annual rise since 1998. December tonnage was 10.5 percentage points higher than a year prior.

Without seasonal adjustments, the December index was 0.8 percentage points more than November, at 116.4.

“Not only did truck tonnage increase due to solid manufacturing output in December, but also from some likely inventory restocking,” Costello said. “Inventories, especially at the retail level, are exceedingly lean, and I suspect that tonnage was higher than expected as the supply chain did some restocking during the month.”

(Nasdaq: YRCW). The company has been streamlining its operations to focus on the market’s less-than-truckload segment, which moves accumulated small shipments instead of entire truckloads from a single shipper. YRC has not yet reported its fourth-quarter financial results.

Because trucking carries most U.S. freight, the industry often is a barometer of the nation’s economy.

YRC Worldwide to Sell 61 Truck Terminals

YRC Worldwide is selling 61 terminals in a sealed-bid auction with a deadline of March 15. The "buy one, some or all" auction is part of YRC's plan to speed freight flow by eliminating unnecessary handling in its remaining network of about 300 terminals.

Most of the terminals are vacant surplus terminals the company hasn't yet been able to sell and are not part of the company's active less-than-truckload network. The terminals up for bid range from a six-door facility in Temple, Texas to a 349-door cross-dock complex in Kernersville, N.C., according to NRC's online listing.

After Kernersville, the largest terminals up for bidding are:

-Toledo, Ohio, 204 doors
-Buffalo, N.Y., 141doors
-Los Angeles, 126 doors

The terminals have been vacant since Yellow Transportation and Roadway joined YRC in 2009. Most of the facilities up for bid were built in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, and a few were built or upgraded in the '90s.

YRC Worldwide has suffered more than $2.5 billion in losses since 2006 as it has struggled to match its network with freight demand.

"Our vacant sites are currently a liability with substantial holding cost, maintenance and real estate taxes," says CFO Jamie Pierson. "We have chosen the auction process to monetize these properties and turn a liability into an asset which can be quickly reinvested in our business."
