Ball Semiconductor has developed ABLE (Advanced Ball Layout Editor) as a computer-aided design tool for Ball Semiconductor designers. Those who are familiar with the demonstration of ABLE's capabilities can now buy the tool for development.
Ball Semiconductor has demonstrated its innovative technologies for the design and fabrication of spherical microelectronics devices. In mid-1998, the Company surprised the semiconductor world with its successful manufacturing of the world's first MOS-type diode on the surface of a 1mm diameter silicon sphere. Then early in 1999, the world's first integrated circuit (NMOS flip-flop circuit) was designed and fabricated using seven mask levels and successfully tested.
This accomplishment proves the feasibility of the spherical integrated circuit design tool, lithography system and other processing tools. ABLE is just one of many technological innovations at Ball Semiconductor. It has also proven to be a very effective tool for the design of spherical sensors and MEMS (microelectromechanical system).
Ball Semiconductor has also developed the "Maskless Photolithography" system, which avoids using conventional photomasks and directly exposes a computer generated pattern onto the spherical surface. By the combination of these two tools, Ball Semiconductor has significantly shortened the cycle time of design-to-production. Cycle time has been reduced from several weeks to minutes.
Ball Semiconductor will provide this CAD tool as its first commercial software product in order to promote the Ball technology worldwide
