Boris Johnson has been warned by Conservative MPs that it is “one more strike and he’s out” after the Tories suffered a humiliating defeat to the Liberal Democrats in the North Shropshire by-election.
The prime minister is facing questions over his leadership of the party after the Lib Dems overturned a 23,000 Tory majority to secure a stunning victory on a 34 per cent swing. The result was described by independent pollsters as a political earthquake that measured “8.5 out of ten” on the Richter scale.
Helen Morgan, the Lib Dems’ candidate, comfortably won the by-election with 17,957 votes. The Conservatives came second with 12,032 votes. Labour came third on 3,686 and the Green Party came fourth on 1,738. Turnout was 46 per cent.
