We are the only producer of alumina and the largest producer of primary aluminum in China, the fastest growing major aluminum market in the world. Alumina and primary aluminum are our principal products. Alumina is refined from bauxite through a chemical process and is the key raw material for producing primary aluminum, which in turn is a widely used metal and the key raw material for aluminum fabrication.
We produced approximately 4.3 million tonnes of alumina products (including alumina, alumina hydrate and alumina chemicals) in 2000, which supplied approximately 70% of all alumina products consumed in China in that year and which made us the third largest producer of alumina in the world. Our alumina production has increased rapidly in the past five years, and we expect to continue to capture the growth of China's alumina market through ongoing expansion. From 1996 to 2000, our alumina production grew at a compound annual rate of 14.0%.

http://stats.world-aluminium.org/iai/stats_new/formServer.asp?form=11

ImageAluminum Corp of China (Chinalco) will begin actively seeking copper deposits in Mongolia as they seek to diversify their metal businesses.
Chinalco is currently China’s largest aluminum producer. However, officials have said they would seek to expand their business into copper metals, as well.
"Metal companies that depend on a single metal cannot secure a sustainable competitive advantage," Lu Yongqing, the company's vice-president said on Friday.
Chinalco has set aside nearly $4 billion to expand into copper mining in Mongolia, as well as other nations.
While copper only accounts for less than ten percent of Chinalco’s current business, their aggressive acquisitions now make them the largest holder of copper reserves in

CHALCO (2600, $20.50) 3M Target $18.0 Trading SELL
CHALCO is trading at 2007 PER of 20.48x and 2008 PER of 21.22x compared with the average PER of 10.0x in the past three years.
Share price surged 46% in the past one-month versus a 18% rise for the HSCEI.
Recent price surge was mainly due to a better than expected interim earnings result and speculation on price gap between A shares and H shares. However, there is no change in company’s fundamental and analysts expect EPS to fall 6% in 2007 and 4% in 2008.
Current share price represents a premium of 48% to analysts’ consensus target price of $13.83 implying a huge downside risk.
We expect to see short-term profit taking on CHALCO and recommend a SELL with a 3-month target price of $18.0 based on 18.6x earnings for 2007.
viel Glück
Aluminum Corp of China (Chalco) (2600.HK: Quote, Profile , Research), the country's top alumina producer, shot up 6.3 percent to HK$20.50. Goldman Sachs raised its price target for the stock to HK$28 from HK$18.50 on the back of several factors, including smelter injections and better cost control.

HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- Alcoa International (Asia) Ltd. is selling up to US$ 1.64 billion worth of existing shares in Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (ACH), or Chalco, according to a term sheet seen by Dow Jones Newswires on Wednesday.
The shareholder is selling 700 million H shares, with an option to sell up to 884.21 million shares, or its entire stake in Chalco, the term sheet said.
The shares are being sold in a price range between HK$17.26 and HK$18.27, representing a discount of 10.4% to 15.4% to Chalco's closing price Wednesday of HK$20.40.
Goldman Sachs is arranging the deal.
-By Jackie Cheung, Dow Jones Newswires; 852-2802-7002; jackie.cheung@ dowjones.com
Alcoa sold all its 884.2mn shares of Chalco at $17.34 per share to cash in $15.3bn. The selling price represented a 15.4% discount to the previous closing price. Alcoa intends to use the gained capital to reinvest other value-adding options, including projects in China.
Meanwhile, Chalco announced a 10% price cut in alumina price from RMB3,900 to RMB3,500 a tonne.
Both news are negative and we expect stock price to be under great pressure in short-term.
Market expects pricing of alumina and aluminum to trend downwards amid oversupply of alumina in China and slowdown of the U.S. economy.
Alcoa’s disposal of shares after the stock price went up by more than 100% within a month may reflect the company’s bearish view on the industry outlook and the stock is now overvalued.
Consensus EPS forecast for 2007 is RMB0.966, down 6% yoy. Meanwhile, current share price is still 29% above the consensus target price of $14.67 implying great downside risk.
Counter is trading at 18.9x 2007 PER that we think is expensive. We maintain our SELL recommendation with a 3-month target price $16.5, representing a 16x 2007 PER.
