Merrill upgrades China East Air (0670) to "Buy" Merrill Lynch has upgraded China Eastern Airlines (0670) (CEA) to "Buy" from "Sell" given talks between CEA and Singapore Airlines (SIA) on strategic investor have been ongoing for a year, whereas both sides appear ready for a deal. The brokerage says CEA appears to be close to securing its long-awaited strategic investor and CEA has recently completed its A-share reform and cleaned up its financial statements. Meanwhile, the government is now increasing its stake so as to maintain majority ownership post a 20%-25% share placement. The brokerage sees this as the last technical barrier to an announcement, which should come this summer. The brokerage thinks SIA or other strategic investor would only seek to acquire new H-shares given they have lower exit barriers an Travelers taking airplanes from China East Airline will no longer need to take registration process or carry the luggage by hand when changing flights as the airline launched a code-sharing system within their flights which aims to simplify air transfer procedures, the Xinhua news agency reported. Travelers can finish all the procedures required at the starting place and they won’t have to run the procedures of declaring luggage, taking registration process or security check during transfer. The code-sharing system is also beneficial to customers in aspects of hand luggage limit. Before the measure is implemented, a traveler going abroad with a hand luggage exceeding 20 kilograms would have to pay for the extra weight in domestic travels. Such is no longer the case, however, as international travelers can take as much as 64 kilograms of luggage free of charge at the starting place. In addition, customers also benefit from reasonable prices resulted from the new measure. A working staff member at China East Airline told reporters that tickets under the code-sharing system are available at any of the airline’s selling outlets that are the staring places of the airlines’international routes. Since the beginning of this year, China East Airlines has opened its international routes at cities such as Harbin, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Chongqing, Dalian and Chengdu, which can fly routes from Shanghai to Europe, the United States, Australia or Asia. The code-sharing system improves the airline's efficiency of air transfer and its network.
