Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Tokyo, November 5, 2024 - Rakuten Bank, Ltd. and Rakuten Securities, Inc. today announced that Money Bridge, a service connecting customers’ Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities accounts, has surpassed 6 trillion yen in deposit balance, as of the end of October 2024.
Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities began offering Money Bridge in April 2011 to improve the convenience of services for private asset building and management. Anyone with both a Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities account can apply for a Money Bridge account free of charge. Once setup is complete, users can use the automatic deposit and withdrawal (sweep) function to automatically transfer funds between their securities account and their bank account free of charge. Moreover, a preferential interest rate is applied to the funds transferred to Rakuten Bank that is up to 1.8 times the regular interest rate offered by Rakuten Bank’s ordinary deposit accounts. This user-friendly and efficient system, combined with its attractive benefits, has been embraced by Rakuten members, leading to the milestone of 6 trillion yen in deposit balance.
In addition to Money Bridge, Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities have expanded their customer base through a range of services utilizing the Rakuten Ecosystem. As a result of these initiatives, Rakuten Bank reached 16 million accounts in July 2024, and Rakuten Securities surpassed 11 million general securities customer accounts in April 2024, marking the largest number of non-consolidated securities accounts (based on disclosed information) among Japanese securities companies. Many customers are attracted by the convenience of these entirely online fintech services, which never require a visit to a physical location.
Going forward, Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities are committed to effectively utilizing the strengths of the Rakuten Group to deliver innovative and convenient services that surpass those offered by traditional digital banks and online securities companies.
About Money Bridge
Money Bridge is a free service that anyone with both a Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities account can apply for. Once setup is complete, users can use a sweep function that automatically transfers funds between the two accounts. This eliminates the need for users to manually make deposits and withdrawals, resulting in a more seamless transaction experience.
When making transactions using Rakuten Securities, insufficient funds are automatically withdrawn from the Rakuten Bank account’s deposit balance.
Funds from the Rakuten Securities account are automatically deposited to the Rakuten Bank account in the evening after each business day. These funds are automatically deposited into the account with a preferential interest rate.
Customers can also earn Rakuten Points when using Rakuten Securities by applying for the Happy Program, the customer loyalty program provided by Rakuten Bank.

Rakuten Mobile reached a major milestone last month, officially surpassing 8 million subscribers on October 18, 2024. And that’s not the only thing that’s increasing – the MNO is also gaining popularity as a primary line. Rakuten Mobile’s MNO main line usage among customers increased the most out of all mobile carriers in Japan according to a recent independent third-party survey .
The rapid rate of growth is particularly noteworthy when compared to Rakuten’s other highly successful services such as Rakuten Card, which now has over 30 million cards issue to customers across Japan: Rakuten Mobile has achieved comparable subscriber growth in close to half the time since launch.
The commitment to quality is evident in Rakuten Mobile’s recent launch of commercial services using 700 MHz “platinum band,” in addition to the ongoing expansion of 5G network coverage and an overall 4G population coverage ratio of 99.9%.
Subscribers are making the most of these improvements, averaging 27.9GB of data usage per month, with younger users between the ages of 13 and 22 driving even higher usage at 44.2GB per month.

Rakuten Group Q3 FY2024 Financial Results Highlights
Consolidated Non-GAAP operating income achieves quarterly profitability for the first time in five years, since Q3 FY2019; IFRS operating income achieves first quarterly profitability since Q2 FY2020.
Overall Performance
The Rakuten Group recorded year-on-year (YoY) revenue growth in all three segments in Q3 FY2024: Internet Services, FinTech and Mobile. Consolidated revenue reached 566.7 billion yen, a record high for the third quarter, up 9.3% YoY.
The Rakuten Group recorded Non-GAAP operating income in Q3 FY2024 of 12.3 billion yen, due largely to increased revenue and cost optimization at Rakuten Mobile and a substantial increase in profits at Rakuten Card. The Group achieved quarterly Non-GAAP operating income profitability for the first time in five years, following significant upfront capital investments to build out its Mobile Network Operator (MNO) business starting in Q3 FY2019. In addition, Rakuten Group recorded 538 million yen in IFRS operating income, achieving quarterly profitability for the first time since Q2 FY2020. EBITDA*1 for the quarter was profitable, recording 92.2 billion yen in a significant increase of 159.1% YoY.
As announced in August 2024, Rakuten Mobile has successfully raised 170 billion yen through the sale and leaseback of mobile network assets. Through this transaction, Rakuten Mobile has secured its own necessary short-term funds, thereby improving the Group's overall liquidity. This enables the Group to allocate cash flow from Internet Services and FinTech businesses to reduce interest-bearing debt.

A promotional campaign will launch on the same day to commemorate the release of the Mizuho Rakuten Card.
In a move to transform Japan’s digital payments landscape and forge new business models by combining their respective areas of expertise, six leading companies, including Rakuten Card and Mizuho Bank, formed a business alliance agreement on November 13, 2024. As a key part of this alliance, Rakuten Card and Mizuho Bank have partnered to issue the Mizuho Rakuten Card.
With this new card, customers can designate Mizuho Bank as their withdrawal account. The more customers use the card, the more Rakuten Points – Rakuten’s flagship loyalty program – they earn. The card, which also comes with preferred benefits for banking transactions, is designed to make everyday life more convenient and rewarding for even more customers.
Membership rewards include 1% in Rakuten Points for purchases using the Mizuho Rakuten Card, and 3% for purchases on Rakuten Ichiba, delivering benefits almost identical to the Rakuten Card. Additionally, as an exclusive benefit, the card comes with Mizuho Mileage Club membership and a range of perks such as free ATM withdrawals and waived money transfer fees when using the Mizuho Rakuten Card, making both banking transactions and everyday shopping more rewarding for customers.
Furthermore, the companies are considering introducing even more attractive benefits, such as integration with a new point service, in a significant update planned for Mizuho Bank's Mizuho Mileage Club next spring.
With around 24 million individual customer accounts, Mizuho Bank has made expanding its customer base while maintaining its strong business foundation a key strategic focus. The bank is committed to becoming the most convenient and reliable partner for its customers.

Boost Mobile has announced it is on its way to meeting FCC coverage deadlines by the end of the year and says it has earned the title of MNO — Mobile Network Operator — rather than MVNO, which is a virtual network operator mainly reselling service from other carriers. Mission... accomplished? Sort of. It’s progress, at least.
Boost, you will remember, is supposed to be our nation’s fourth wireless carrier thanks to a wonky deal that allowed T-Mobile to buy Sprint. Dish Network — now owned by EchoStar — bought the brand as part of the deal and is required by the FCC to hit certain milestones in its 5G network buildout to hold up its part of the bargain. Last June, it was required to cover 70 percent of the US population; by the end of the year, it needs to reach 80 percent. Boost’s chief technology officer, Eben Albertyn, told The Verge, “We are well on our way to meeting this goal.” He says the company has lit up more than 20,000 of the 24,000 cell sites it has promised to deploy by June 2025.
