Shaun Murphy made a superb start to last season, reaching the last 16 of a ranking event for the first time in his career.
He beat Kwan Poomjang and Brian Morgan to qualify for the Guild Hall in Preston then saw off local favourite Ian McCulloch 5-2. He trailed Steve Davis 4-2 in the next round but hit back to beat his boyhood idol 5-4. His run was ended by John Higgins as he lost 5-2.
Murphy went on to reach the last 32 of the British Open as well as the Daily Record Players Championship. At the latter he faced another of his boyhood heroes – Jimmy White. The Whirlwind progressed 5-3 but had some kind words for his opponent.
“Shaun is a fantastic player, I haven’t seen anyone who cues the ball as smoothly on long pots for a long time,” said White, who went on to win the tournament. “He’s definitely a class act.” Murphy finished the season with a rise of 16 places in the rankings to No 48.
In 2003, Murphy won five matches to qualify for the televised stages of the Embassy World Championship and was then involved in a Crucible thriller against Ken Doherty.
The talented youngster came from 8-4 down to tie the match at 9-9. He looked favourite in the deciding frame but a safety shot on the final yellow went wrong and a relieved Doherty cleared to the black to snatch victory. “It was a fabulous match,” said Murphy. “I’m proud of myself because I showed that I can come back when the chips are down.”
This was the Northamptonshire potter’s second appearance in Sheffield – he also won five qualifying matches in 2002 before going down 10-4 to Stephen Hendry.
One of the first six World Snooker Young Players of Distinction, Murphy made a major impact during the 2000/2001 season and earned the World Snooker Newcomer of the Year and YPD of the Year awards.
He won the B&H Snooker Championship, overcoming Stuart Bingham 9-7 in the final, to earn a wild-card entry to the Masters. He thrashed Marco Fu 6-1 in the first round at Wembley Conference Centre and then led Hendry 4-1 before losing 6-4.

Steve Davis ist sicherlich schon der Älteste dieser Garde. Kann mich noch an die spannenden Duelle gegen den damals jungen Stephen Hendry erinnern, der ihn dann letztendlich von der Weltspitze ablöste.
