Squeezing in between TM Forum’s Digital Transformation World last week, and MWC Las Vegas this week, Rakuten’s annual Optimism event might not have received the attention it deserved from the telecom community. But make no mistake: the update on Germany’s 1&1 offered important new insights on Rakuten Symphony’s progress in disrupting telecom beyond its native Japan.
In conversation with Symphony CEO Tareq Amin, Chief Revenue Officer Rabih Dabbousi, 1&1 CEO Michael Martin gave new details of 1&1’s progress and thinking on key aspects of its plans.
As well as highlighting achievements to date at 1&1, the discussion offered insights into industry-wide concerns including security and energy optimization.

Rakuten replaces Red Hat with open source Rocky Linux OS

Rakuten Mobile had already dealt a blow to Red Hat’s hopes of leading the Open RAN cloud layer in May, when it said it would replace its initial partner with the Robin.io orchestration and cloud automation technology (Rakuten has also acquired Robin.io). Now it has announced further distancing from Red Hat, replacing its Linux operating system with Rocky Linux OS, from open source distributor CIQ. Tareq Amin, CEO of Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony, claimed the change would reduce the cost of the OS by 80%, and support a real time kernel for processing the most demanding RAN functions in distributed units (DUs) at the network edge. Rakuten Symphony will deploy the technology as part of its stack.

Rakuten Viki has announced a partnership with Chinese online video platform Tencent Video to bring an array of popular and new Chinese dramas to its streaming platform
The partnership is designed to give global audiences outside of China visibility of Tencent Video’s premium line-up of Chinese dramas, but also to expand further Rakuten Viki’s offerings within this category. Effective immediately, Rakuten Viki will feature a Tencent Video x WeTV branded hub where fans can view the collection all in one place.
At launch, the Tencent Video x WeTV hub will feature more than 70 Chinese dramas with more expected to be added in the coming months. You Are My Glory, A Dream of Splendor, and The Oath of Love are several of the series that Rakuten Viki users will be able to find at launch. Newer and highly anticipated Chinese drama debuts will also be available on Rakuten Viki.

The results are certainly impressive, with typically a 3msec latency sustained between gamer and application server over the network. As Martin explained in more technical terms, 3msec latency is close to the theoretical limit for a TDD framing rate (the 1&1 network uses TDD rather than FDD). In more prosaic terms – a Minecraft player using the 1&1 network has the edge over another player on a higher-latency connection!
