Rakuten GORA startet Kooperation mit Kakao Golf Reservation, einer der größten Golfplatzreservierungsplattformen Koreas

22. Dezember 2023

62648 Postings, 7140 Tage LibudaRise of Cashback Rewards in Europe

    #11179
25.12.23 15:56

Online shopping has exploded in popularity across Europe in recent years. While much of the initial growth centered around domestic retailers, consumers in some of Europe’s largest economies are increasingly turning to multi-national sites to find the products they want at the best prices. Cashback browser extensions that offer a percentage of money back on purchases have emerged as a way to further reward online shoppers for cross-border spending.

Rakuten launched cashback rewards for online shopping in May 2022 for consumers in Spain, Germany, and the UK.

Google Trends indicates that UK search demand for “cashback rewards” has grown 27% year-to-date vs. 2022.

Google Trends shows a 18% growth in French search demand for “cashback rewards” this year to date vs. 2022.

According to Google Trends, German search demand for the concept “cashback rewards” in 2023 is overall lower than in the UK and France, but year-over-year is 21% higher.

The growth of international online shopping presents a major opportunity for further expansion of cashback browser extensions across Europe. As participation in e-commerce grows, so will consumer’s interest in using tools that help them maximize savings and value. But where might we see the adoption of cashback browser extensions and other online savings tools grow even more?

Although Germany and France are smaller markets than the UK in terms of their ecommerce sales, they both represent key opportunities for growth. Germany’s e-commerce sales are projected to grow by 23.1% CAGR from 2023 to 2028, with ecommerce penetration reaching 87% of German households (up from 58% in 2023).  France is projected to grow more slowly than Germany and the UK, with 7.49% CAGR in ecommerce sales from 2023 to 2028.

With the UK, France, and Germany presenting tremendous e-commerce growth opportunities, cashback shopping reward programs are well-positioned to see increased usage in these countries in the near future too.

26.12.23 13:40
When it comes to software-driven transformation, there are two primary go-forward strategies that can be pursued:

1.§Start from scratch: we affectionately refer to this approach as “the slow way”, where MNOs first determine what they want to accomplish, then organise resources and get to work. They are taking on challenging areas on their own, and spending time solving these challenges with no positive outcomes guaranteed. Notably, this was the approach taken last decade by Rakuten Mobile in Japan, when it had no alternative as the first pioneer willing to take the risk of creating a software-led MNO.

2.§Build on the backs of others: this approach is faster because the key challenges in pioneering a software-based network have already been met by the teams that faced them first. Step one is to invest, inheriting what has already been learned and realised in now-existing software developed and hardened by others. With this approach, mistakes, costs, and time-to-market can be drastically cut. Unnecessary risk and delay are removed.

Excellent numbers

Now looking at the each geo within Japan and also outside of Japan. These are the key topics. The domestic EC is at plus 15.7%. The last year it was not so bad, but we still saw another growth spurt this year year-on-year. The growth has been even stronger in travel. And I think that has been the main focus, but we have advertising sales that has gone up by 15.3%.

With the overseas business, we have Rakuten TV users at 84.4 million people, plus 42.1% year-on-year. We have Rakuten Kobo plus 6.6%, Rakuten Viber plus 5.7% at ¥1.5 billion. And also Rakuten VIKI, This has already turned profitable. It's close to 88 million registered users. Rakuten Rewards business in U.S. is going very strongly and also the content business as such also steadily becoming our sources of profit.

So in the future we can reach to 15 million people, 20 million people using Rakuten Mobile. If that can be achieved, then Rakuten Ichiba, the distribution scale is going to go up by that much as well 30%, 50%.

So, we think that there's going to be a big synergy potential. Also, another advantage of this is that this Rakuten plan is quite cheap, right? So compared to what other vendors are doing, they have giga hold plans. That's monthly price is ¥7,000, ¥8,000. But if they switch to Rakuten it's maybe ¥3,000 per month, and you get lots of points. So, you gain a law from just simply switching.

Rakuten Mobile Surpasses 6 Million Mobile Carrier Service Subscribers

Tokyo, December 28, 2023 – Rakuten Mobile, Inc. today announced that the number of subscribers for its mobile carrier service has surpassed 6 million as of December 26, 2023.

Since the full-scale launch of its mobile carrier service in April 2020, Rakuten Mobile has continued on its mission to democratize the mobile industry, offering an affordable and simple service plan while expanding the Rakuten network area through the build-out of base stations and roaming agreements.

The Rakuten SAIKYO Plan – available since June 2023 – does away with the previous limit on high-speed data capacity in the domestic roaming partner network area, offering unlimited high-speed data usage in network areas nationwide with a 99.9% 4G population coverage ratio, including both the Rakuten network area and the domestic roaming partner network area. With monthly fees of 2,980 yen (3,278 yen including tax) for unlimited data usage over 20GB, the plan is being enjoyed by an increasing number of customers across Japan. Since January 2023, Rakuten Mobile has offered simple-to-use service plans for business customers as well through the Rakuten Mobile Business Plan.

The company is also promoting initiatives that enable Rakuten Mobile subscribers to derive even greater value from Rakuten Group services. From December 1, 2023, after a change to the Super Point Up Program, which scales up the amount of Rakuten Points earned on Rakuten Ichiba according to the number of Rakuten Group services being used, all Rakuten SAIKYO Plan users earn a rate of 5% on Rakuten Ichiba purchases every day, regardless of membership rank.

Furthermore, the Rakuten Mobile Referral Campaign, which was launched in February 2023, helps to reward users who promote Rakuten Mobile to their friends and family. As part of the campaign, referrers earn 7,000 Rakuten Points while the referred customer earns 6,000 Rakuten Points. The initiative has increased the number of new Rakuten Mobile subscribers, drawing in over 150,000 participants to date.

Rakuten Mobile will continue its efforts to improve network quality and expand its range of services so that customers can enjoy best-in-class mobile services anywhere in Japan.

What Is Drawing Newer Japanese Crypto Investors to Mercari & Rakuten?

There was grim reading for two of the industry’s hard-hitting players, Coincheck and SBI VC Trade.
Both are operated by well-funded, crypto-keen securities operators, but respectively claimed 10.6% and 8.2% of the newbie pie.

The trends were just as pronounced in the group of 1,675 respondents who said they had been trading coins for less than a year.

Almost 27% of this group said they were Rakuten Wallet users, with almost 21% picking Mercari – and bitFlyer in third with 12%.

For its part, Rakuten claimed in September this year that it had just short of 41 million monthly active users.

Rakuten Wallet allows customers to exchange the points they earn by trading on Rakuten Market (or by spending money with Rakuten Card accounts) into crypto.

So, the current network, 13 million subscribers can be supported with the current network structure. So if it goes beyond that and that will be a good timing to think of new investment in the future, but for the time being, it is not necessary to make additional investment to strengthen the capacity.
