Bullish on Rakuten’s E-commerce and Financial service segments, which are expected to grow at a double-digit rate

To support its E-commerce business, Rakuten Group established a financial services division to provide mobile payments, credit cards, consumer loans, and other related services. Later on, the financial business spreads to banking, securities, and insurance. Owing to its fast-growing e-commerce business, Rakuten marked a robust result in financial services, with revenue rising by 7.2% YoY to JPY 0.6 trillion and operating profit growing by 10.8% YoY to JPY 98.7 billion.

Over the long term, given a less than 80% coverage ratio for E-commerce in Japan by the end of 2022, we believe Japanese E-commerce could be able to remain a high growth rate in the years ahead and continue to be bullish on Rakuten’s E-commerce and Financial service segments, which are expected to grow at a double-digit rate.

Ex-Rakuten boss confirms next role at Saudi’s Aramco Digital

OCTOBER 17, 2023

Ex-Rakuten Symphony boss Tareq Amin (pictured) told Mobile World Live he has joined Saudi oil company Aramco to take the helm of its recently-created enterprise digital technology unit.

Amin confirmed his new position after he teased he had taken a Saudi Arabia-related job on social media platform X over the weekend, stating he was excited to be contributing to the “incredible push for a digital revolution” in the country.

Amin then told MWL he had joined Aramco, one of the biggest companies in the world by market cap, taking over as CEO of its digital unit which was formed in January this year as part of a move by the oil giant to diversify its operations.

The unit has outlined intentions to tap into AI and emerging technologies, while also hinting at the deployment of private 5G networks following an MoU with Samsung.

It has been more than two months since Amin departed as CEO of software platform offering Rakuten Symphony, a role he held for more than a year.

Before that, he was CTO of Rakuten Mobile, the open RAN pioneer which became the first mobile operator to build an end-to-end virtualised telecoms infrastructure.

Rakuten Symphony talks Open RAN benefits and bringing radio disaggregation to brownfield network environments

In the recent Open RAN Global Forum, available on demand, Rakuten Symphony Chief Business Officer Rabih Dabboussi reflected on the why and how of the approach in Japan, and what he sees driving adoption of Open RAN in the larger brownfield network market.

In terms of why Rakuten Mobile elected to go with Open RAN, Dabboussi highlighted three main drivers. First, he said because Rakuten Mobile was entering a market with three established incumbent operators, they need a more advantageous cost structure focused on TCO reduction to gain a competitive edge. Second, given Rakuten Group’s large reach into things like e-commerce, financial services, travel, entertainment and more, mobile fit into a larger data-driven platform strategy. And third, “We don’t believe in a building a huge organization to keep the lights up…The adoption of a software-centric, highly programmable network leveraging highly optimized cost compute and storage and network systems.
