Libuda : Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Look Out Amazon, Here Comes...Rakuten?
Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Ebates for $1 billion.
The acquisition, which Rakuten hinted at last week, is part of the Japanese company’s push to grow its base beyond its domestic market and hopefully, become a global player. Having made some $1.2 billion acquisitions to date along these lines, this is Rakuten’s most ambitious move to date.
However, investors are dubious that the company can absorb yet another foreign acquisition, much less one the size of Ebates, despite Rakuten’s strong cash position.
Then there is the ever-present Amazon, which dominates the e-commerce market in the U.S. Few believe it will falter in the face of Chinese giant Alibaba, much less a Rakuten-Ebates combo.
Rakuten Goes Forth
Not surprisingly, Rakuten says it is undaunted. For starters, it has assembled a very interesting mix of acquisitions. There is messaging app Viber, which it purchased for $900 million in February, the Canadian ebook offering Kobo, Spanish video service Wuaki.tv, Viki, a digital content platform and Buy.com.
Now it has picked up Ebates.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese online retailer Rakuten <4755.T> and Walmart's Seiyu said they plan to open a new logistics site in Yokohama later this year to deal with growing sales from their joint online supermarket business.
Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper's sales between late October through the end of December rose 30% from a year earlier, the companies said in a joint statement on Thursday.
Internet grocery shopping has been slow to take off in Japan, where consumers are accustomed to shopping daily for fresh produce. But Seiyu and bigger rival Aeon Co <8267.T> expect change ahead due to growing numbers of working women, and advancements in technology and logistics networks.

Libuda : Rakuten investiert in Edge Computing
Edge computing, which brings computation and data storage closer to the location where it is needed thereby improving response times and saving bandwidth, will impact every internet user in the world as it becomes the way the internet works behind the scenes.
Offering a faster solution for smart devices, edge computing is a next generation model that will revolutionise the way society uses the internet.
Dr Blesson Varghese, Lecturer in the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) at Queen’s explained: “Currently, processing of all data we generate usually happens on geographically distant clouds.
“As billions of devices are getting connected to the internet, we need more sustainable and scalable architectures for computing. They must not solely rely on distant centralised clouds.
“Edge computing will bring certain services of applications closer to the users on the edge of the network. This will make applications more responsive and reduce bandwidth demand in the network core.”
The key mission of the project is to make edge computing a reality.

Pai said, “There’s no American-based supplier of equipment. But people are innovating to virtualize the radio access network and other parts of the 5G network. I’ve met with Rakuten. I just met recently with Altiostar, a Boston-based company.”
He indicated that 5G with its multitude of small cells and edge compute locations “increases the attack surface,” in terms of security. Pai is interested in companies such as Rakuten and Altiostar because they are working on next-generation wireless networks that replace proprietary hardware with software stacks that can run on generic hardware. He said these virtualized networks will help to bypass some security issues and also decrease the cost of building 5G networks.
“Software is something America has really led on,” said Pai. Although Rakuten is a Japanese company, it’s using vendors from all around the world, including Altiostar, which is a U.S.-based vendor.
Libuda : Lyft is a Must-Have
GuruFocus.com•January 17, 2020
You can't discuss the gig economy without mentioning Lyft Inc. (NASDAQ:LYFT), Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:UBER) and the ridesharing space. Interestingly, both stocks have a strong positive correlations and follow the same trajectory.
While both companies have their own strengths and weaknesses, however, Lyft appears to be the better pick of the two. Even though it has not expanded internationally at the same scale as Uber, Lyft has the advantage of a cheaper valuation and lower levels of debt. The stock is currently trading at a price-sales ratio of 1.13, which is significantly lower than that of Uber (3.9). Also, its debt-equity ratio of 0.15 is well below Uber's 0.5, which implies a significantly lower capital gearing and relatively lower risk.
Admittedly, Lyft is burning more cash as a percentage of its revenue as compared to Uber, but the difference is not huge. Also, with an expected improvement in market perception, this stock will have a greater upside since it is trading at lower multiples.

Rakuten is arguably the best-known service of its kind -- or, at least, it was before the inexplicable name-change. I like it for its simplicity and reliability. Its browser plug-in makes it easy for me to check if there's a cash-back option for any given store, and its apps support mobile cash-back shopping. (Many, if not most, cash-back services require a desktop browser.) The service is also among the few to support in-store cash-back shopping as well. Every 90 days, Rakuten pays out your rebates in the form of a check or PayPal deposit.

Revenue per Active Rider increased 21.7%, 33.9% and 27% in the first, second and the third quarter of 2019, respectively. The new rental-car service, if successful, should further drive the top line. However, significant cost pressure due to high sales and marketing expenses are weighing on its bottom line.

20,000-square-foot facility in Aurora is expected to be able to service more than 100 cars a day when it reaches full capacity
With the driver center model at work in Aurora, not only can drivers expect discount work (just how discounted, company officials would not say) they also are coming to a place where the staff’s goal is the same as theirs: get the car back on the road ASAP.
Utilizing best practices pioneered by Toyota, the driver center today can use its three-lane garage system to service 22 cars per day, a figure that is expected to keep rising, said Chris Buller, Lyft’s head of vehicle service center operations. When things are really clicking, Lyft officials say the garage could handle 100 cars or more each day.
“Ninety percent of drivers are part-time. That means they are driving less than 20 hours a week. With that limited amount of time, any disruption is problematic,” Cohen said. “The interest of the driver center and the interest of the drivers are highly aligned because it’s part of the Lyft family.”
The center also has a large lounge area with Wifi, bathrooms and a coffee station. Company associates are on hand to sign up and certify new drivers, answer driver questions, resolve issues and provide information about Lyft programs such as the fleet of 200 rentable electric cars the company launched in Denver in November.

Libuda : Rakuten US is more of an online merchant model
Posted on January 10, 2020 by Patrick Kelly
Rakuten has more ambitious goals to enter the U.S. market. Its more of an online merchant model and less about carving out a niche in a highly competitive mobile consumer and enterprise mobile broadband market.
Libuda : Lyft versus Uber
In North America, Uber's revenue rose 39% annually in Q3 to $2.41 billion. However, much of this growth was produced by the Uber Eats restaurant-delivery business, which is estimated by Second Measure to have claimed 19% of the U.S. restaurant-delivery market in 2019.
Meanwhile, Lyft, which operates only in the U.S. and Canada, reported its revenue rose 63% annually in Q3 to $955.6 million. A 28% increase in active riders helped, as did a 27% increase in revenue per active rider, the result of both growth in activity per rider and a more favorable pricing environment.
Aside from impacting Uber's revenue and bookings growth, DiDi's and Lyft's share gains serve to put them on better long-term competitive footing, by improving their network effects in the metro areas that they operate in. A larger market share gives drivers a greater incentive to work for a particular ride-sharing service. And more drivers, in turn, improves a service's coverage within a metro area, which gives riders a greater incentive to use it.
