Der USA Bären-Thread
Retail investors haven’t been THIS bullish since (gulp) you know when...
The bears will tell you this market is a lot like the one back in 2000, when the dot-com bubble was on the verge of its epic collapse.
And, at least by one measure, they’d be spot on (Chart unten).
“For years, individual investors in the U.S. have been a dreary bunch, as stocks soared relentlessly since bottoming out in 2009,” writes Wolf Richter of the Wolf Street blog. “But 18 months ago, in February 2016, they finally caught the bug, and now optimism has surged at a record pace.”
He’s referring to the quarterly Wells Fargo/Gallup survey of investors with at least $10,000 in the markets, which noted that 68% of these people said they’re optimistic about the stock market’s performance next year. That kind of outright bullishness hasn’t been seen since 2000.
Taking it a step further, 25% of those investors said they’re “very optimistic” about the prospects — an all-time record — and up from 11% just a year ago.
This “new surge of optimism” has pushed the index of investor optimism up to 138. As you can see from the chart, that’s the highest level since September 2000, and well above the levels of the pre-financial crisis housing- and stock-market boom....

As some Florida Keys residents return to their devastated islands Tuesday, 15 million Floridians are learning when they'll finally get power back.
All customers who lost electricity on the eastern side of the state will likely have power restored by the end of this weekend, Florida Power & Light said Tuesday. Customers on the west coast of Florida -- where Hurricane Irma made its final landfall -- will likely have power restored by September 22.
It's a long wait for those sifting through what's left of their homes in the oppressive heat, bombarded by high humidity and relentless mosquitoes.
*SNB = Schweizer Nationalbank

Shares of the Swiss National Bank Soar 64% in Two Months
The central bank of Switzerland has become a huge hedge fund since it decided in January 2015 to print Swiss francs — for which there is huge global demand — and sell these freshly created francs to buy bonds and stocks that are denominated in euros and dollars. US stocks are a particular favorite. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has thereby created a fantastical money-fabrication scheme. This scheme is publicly traded. And the shares have become a doozie.
Today, the shares (SNBN) closed at a new high of 3,126 Swiss francs, having soared 64% since July 19 in cryptocurrency-fashion....

At this point, a day or two without power seems like just a minor inconvenience. Maybe some spoiled milk in the fridge. Or the frustration of a drained cellphone.
But much of eastern Florida hasn't had electricity since last weekend. And parts of the state's battered west coast might not get power for another 10 days.
The danger was exemplified Wednesday, when eight people died in Hollywood, Florida, after their nursing home lost air conditioning. The residents' causes of death are being investigated.
I'm afraid the death toll from Irma is not over yet," said Craig Fugate, former administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Fugate himself had no power Wednesday in his Gainesville home. Electricity can literally be a lifeline, powering everything from hospitals to oxygen tanks....

“You Should Take the Fed at Their Word”
...The markets have been brushing off the Fed and have done the opposite of what the Fed has set out to accomplish. The Fed wants to tighten financial conditions. It’s worried about asset prices. It’s worried that these inflated assets which are used as collateral by the banks, pose a danger to financial stability...

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Do you think interest rates should go up by the end of the year, with these hurricanes this fall?
JAMIE DIMON: The hurricanes are irrelevant. I wouldn't have any policy matter as a function of hurricanes. Going to reduce GDP in the short run, they'll probably increase it after that. I'll let the economists figure it out. But almost a $20 trillion economy, that isn't a reason to change monetary policy. It will create a lot of noise in the numbers, but I wouldn't overreact to that....
