TOKYO (CBS.MW) - The yen fell against the dollar and the euro on Monday, as investors weighted the impact of a major earthquake that hit Indonesia and surrounding countries on Sunday.
Over 13,000 people were reported dead following an earthquake off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, about 1,000 miles northwest of Jakarta, the capital. The quake, the most powerful in four decades, triggered tidal waves that smashed into coastlines across Asia Sunday, washing away whole villages in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. See full story.
There was no direct impact on Japan from the temblor, but shares of airline companies took a hit. See Asia Markets. The disaster also served as a reminder of quake-prone Japan's own vulnerability to natural devastation.
"The market's initial reaction was to sell Asian currencies as market participants kept the earthquake in mind," said Masaki Fukui, vice president of forex division at Mizuho Corporate Bank in Tokyo.
The dollar traded at 103.75 yen, compared with 103.65 yen late Friday in the United States. The greenback hit a high of 104.14 yen earlier in Tokyo trading.
"When the dollar climbed to the 104 yen level, it met with upward resistance as some Japanese exporters had waited to sell at that level," Fukui said.
The euro traded at $1.3539, compared with $1.3525 in the United States late Friday. The European currency hit a record $1.3549 on Friday.
Against its Japanese counterpart, the euro traded at 140.47 yen after touching an 18-month high of 104.68 yen earlier. It was at 140.19 yen in the United States Friday.
The euro has continued to test higher ground since Friday in thin trading after Dutch Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm reportedly said the euro's rise was within an acceptable range.
The remark contrasted with comments from French Finance Minister Herve Gaymard, who told reporters late last week that the U.S. "absolutely" had to understand at a Group of 7 meeting of finance ministers from leading industrialized countries in February that "coordinated" international management was needed, AFX News reported.
On the data front Monday, a decline in business confidence among Japan's large companies had little impact on currencies.
A joint survey by Ministry of Finance and the Cabinet Office showed the headline business conditions index, calculated by subtracting companies reporting worsening business conditions from companies reporting improvement, fell to 2.1 percentage points in October-December quarter from 9.6 in the previous quarter. The index is forecast to show a rise to 4.1 percentage points in January-March quarter.
U.S. stock and bond markets were closed Friday to mark Christmas. Some European markets will close early and others will be shuttered entirely.
The dollar has stabilized at slightly firmer levels in the past few sessions in a move most currency traders said was position-squaring ahead of year's end.
But the currency market continues to focus on the sustainability of record U.S. trade and budget deficits and whether an orderly reversal of these gaps is plausible without upsetting the global economy.
The market also remains convinced the Bush administration will do little to stand in the way of a depreciating U.S. currency, even as officials pledge their support for a "strong" dollar.
Brighter economic data could fuel expectations for rising U.S. interest rates. If higher rates draw foreign capital into the United States, that could help finance the deficits, at least in the short term.
