"Dongfeng Motor Group '09 profit up 58% to $915 mln

Shanghai, April 14 (Gasgoo.com) Dongfeng Motor Group Co. (0489.HK) said today that its profit rose 58% last year to 6.25 billion yuan ($915 million) as vehicle sales were boosted by government incentives, Bloomberg reported.

Dongfeng Motor Group, a Chinese partner of PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Honda Motor and Nissan Motor, boosted sales of vehicles by 44% in 2009 to 1.9 million units, with sales of passenger cars growing 45.6% to 1.05 million. Sales at its joint venture with PSA jumped 52% to 270,006 cars.

"The sales growth of Dongfeng's PSA Peugeot venture, which was previously the weak point for the group, helped beef up Dongfeng's 2009 profit," a Hong Kong-based analyst said. "Dongfeng will continue to grow this year in line with the market expansion."

Dongfeng and Honda have decided to invest 1.15 billion yuan to build a second plant for their joint venture in China as vehicle demand rises in the Chinese auto market. The factory will start production by late 2012, with an initial capacity of 60,000 units.

Last year, China overtook the United States to become the world's largest auto market, with sales rising 46% 13.6 million vehicles, after the government cut sales taxes for small cars and offered subsidies to rural auto buyers.

Dongfeng Motor Group's passenger car sales last month grew 60.94% from a year earlier to 34,100 units and output increased 74.07% to 31,400 units."

"Dongfeng Motor expects chances for overseas M&A

Shanghai, April 14 (Gasgoo.com) China's major automaker Dongfeng Motor Group Co (0489.HK) expects to have opportunities for mergers and acquisitions in the global auto sector that is still reeling from the fallout of the global recession, Reuters reported today.

"The company will closely monitor opportunities for overseas acquisitions," Xu Ping, chairman of the Hong Hong-listed company of Dongfeng Motor Corp, told reporters in a news conference on today.

Xu added that the possible appreciation of China's currency, the yuan, would further strengthen Dongfeng's position in making any acquisitions. The Chinese yuan is believed to see it value rise again in the next few months. And some Chinese auto companies hope to "go global" by M&A.

Dongfeng Motor, the Chinese joint venture partner of Nissan Motor, Honda Motor and PSA Peugeot Citroen, is also ready to follow suit after China's largest private automaker Geely Holding Group signed a definitive deal late last month to buy the Volvo car unit from Ford Motor.

Dongfeng Motor Group's profit rose 58% last year to 6.25 billion yuan ($915 million) as vehicle sales were boosted by government incentives. Its sales grew by 44% in 2009 to 1.9 million vehicles, with sales of passenger cars up 45.6% to 1.05 million."

"PSA Peugeot plans to build third Dongfeng JV plant

Shanghai, May 7 (Gasgoo.com) French carmaker PSA Peugeot is still committed to building a third plant for its Chinese venture with Dongfeng Motor Group to accelerate expansion in the world's largest auto market, Reuters reported today.

PSA Peugeot aims to sell about 400,000 cars in China this year, approaching the annual capacity of 450,000 units of the current two facilities it operates with its Chinese partner Dongfeng Motor in Wuhan, eastern China.

"PSA and Dongfeng are both committed to our third China plant. We are still discussing the details of the new facility with our partner," said a PSA executive.

The joint venture, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile Company Ltd., sold 120,300 cars in the first four months of this year, up 63% from a year earlier, he said.

The French automaker has set a target to sell 2 million vehicles annually in China by 2020, raising the company's share in the Chinese market to 10% from the current 3.5%.

Earlier this week, PSA Peugeot signed an initial agreement with Changan Automotive Group to form a 50-50 vehicle-manufacturing venture, its second JV in China.

The new venture may use Changan subsidiary Hafei Auto's existing plant in the southern city of Shenzhen to make light commercial vehicles and passenger cars."

Shanghai, May 27 (Gasgoo.com) Dongfeng-Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company will break ground on its passenger car engine project next month, its vice manager Li Chunrong, told Daily Economic News recently.

With a designed capacity of 360,000 sets, Dongfeng-Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company plans to produce both 1.4L and 2.4L engines for the entire engine project in order to meet the future product line-up of Dongfeng Motor's passenger car program initiated since 2004, said Li, who is yet to disclose the investment amount of the project.

The company will launch products based on displacement of the engines. The previous Dongfeng S30 and H30 cars share a C-Class platform. In the future, the mid- and high-class sedans with 2.0L to 2.4L engines will be built on a D-Class platform, while the compact sedans with 1.3L to 1.5L engines will be using a B-Class platform, Li said.

Under the company's plan, after completing the above three platforms, 1.6L models will account for 40% of the overall models, and 2.0L models, 18%; 1.3L-1.5L models, around 20%.

Reportedly, Dongfeng Fenshen sales were 12,000 units in the first four months this year, with average monthly sales reaching 3,000 units."

"Nissan joint venture may produce EVs in China

The president of Dongfeng Motor Co., a joint venture in China between Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. and China's Dongfeng group, expressed a desire Friday to produce electric vehicles there.

"We'd like to make (the vehicle) locally as early as possible," Dongfeng Motor President Kimiyasu Nakamura said in an interview in Yokohama with Kyodo News, referring to the Leaf electric vehicle that is planned to be launched in China next year.

Dongfeng Motor is Nissan's 50-50 venture with the Dongfeng group.

While hinting at a possibility of teaming up with a Chinese parts maker if the company starts producing the car in China, Nakamura avoided specifying any timing that the automaker would start production.

"We'd like to study (the timing) by looking into sales volume and government measures to boost car purchases," Nakamura said.

Meanwhile, Nakamura said new car sales in China are likely to top 15 million vehicles this year, and added the automaker aims to achieve a 2010 sales target of 1 million units by November."

"Dongfeng’s Tai Concept going into production soon

Dongfeng showed off the fantastic Tai Concept Car at the Beijing Auto Show, although it seemed to be fairly a demure stand at Dongfeng which mostly showed off their joint venture produced wares instead of their self produced vehicles.

The Tai Concepet car was Dongfeng’s shot at bringing their own brand upmarket, which is something that most Chinese makers are aiming to produce over the next few months to explore new markets, both Chery, Geely and Hawtai are aiming for this segment, whilst Dongfeng are playing catch up.

Out of the major state owned automakers, Dongfeng is certainly slipping behind in their ability to launch their own branded cars. FAW and SAIC are already leading the way with their self developed B50/B70 and MG6/Roewe 550 models, Dongfeng is not the only late comer though, Guangzhou Auto is on the verge of building its own cars and so are Beijing Auto but the difference here is that Beijing and Guangzhou Auto are using tried and tested platforms in the form of the Saab platforms and the Alfa-Romeo platforms, but it appears that Dongfeng are quite content with using the Citroen ZX platform for their S30 sedan.

The future does not bode well for Dongfeng if they plan to go global."

Shanghai, June 13 (Gasgoo.com) According to the statistics of China Association of Auto Manufacturers (CAAM), Dongfeng Fengxing's sales in the first quarter rose 78% year on year. Among them, sales of Fengxing Joyear (Jingyi) had a year-on-year growth of 94%, much higher than the overall growth of the domestic passenger car market. Joyear enjoyed particular popularity in Shenzhen.

It is understood that Joyear is a vibrant MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) model. Its excellent all-round properties cater to people's various car needs in daily journey, traveling, business reception and the like. It enhanced life's richness.

The 2010 Joyear uses a reinforced chassis, which provides protection to the fuel tank when it is running on a bumpy road so as to improve the whole car's performance.

Besides, the 2010 Joyear adopts as many as 15 key NVH technologies. NVH refers to noise, vibration and harshness, three standards for evaluating the comfort level of a car. Joyear boosts its comfort level by optimizing dust proofing equipment, strengthening the stiffness of its suspension system and perfecting its heat and noise insulation design.

In additional to the booming market in Shenzhen, Joyear is also a sought-after car in other areas. Tao Liwen, general manager of the marketing department in Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co., Ltd, said Joyear's approximately 100% growth rate is attributed to its stabilized quality, coupled with the changes of lifestyle brought about by Chinese economic development."

Shanghai, June 18 (Gasgoo.com) French carmaker PSA Peugeot and its Chinese partner Dongfeng Motor Group are considering whether to build a third factory in China and their joint venture will examine the matter at its next board meeting in July, Reuters reported today.

Nissan have been very generous to their joint venture partner, Dongfeng, as they have granted them the use of the popular Nissan Tiida platform on which to build their next self developed model.

Dongfeng’s entry into the self developed automobile industry has lagged behind other state manufacturers, however with some serious platforms and technologies under their belts it is expected that they will make quick advances into the market, although they are largely lagging behind the likes of Chery and Geely.

Previously it was rumored that the last generation of Nissan Sunny was to become a Dongfeng self developed vehicle, instead Nissan are planning to bring the car back from the grave and breath new life into it.

Dongfeng Motor Corp, China's third-largest automaker, sold nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the first five months this year, a 64 percent increase over the same period last year.

In May alone, the company reported sales of 207,764 vehicles, up 37 percent from a year previous.

The company said it aims to deliver 220,000 vehicles by the end of this year, 17 percent more than last year.

Last week the company began construction on plant that will make engines for its own-brand passenger vehicles when production begins in the last half of 2011.

Two Dongfeng models launched last year - the Fengshen S30 sedan and H30 hatchback - registered sales of 33,000 cars by the end of May. Both are currently equipped with engines made at the joint venture between Dongfeng and its French partner PSA Peugeot Citroen.

Dongfeng's joint venture with Nissan Motor posted sales of 272,600 cars between January and May, an increase of 51 percent compared with the same period last year.

The venture broke ground on a new 5 billion yuan plant in Huadu district, Guangzhou, last month.
