Likewise, in December Viber integrated banking into the app. Users can send and receive money within Viber by talking to chatbots, and this promises a new era of digital banking. Recently, Viber hired mobile advertising expert Djamel Agaoua as CEO. According to Bloomberg, in the new version of Viber (to be released in March) users will be able to make reservations at restaurants.
And we can also expect e-commerce to play a role in Viber’s future. Rakuten, Viber’s parent company, is an e-commerce giant often dubbed “the Amazon.com, Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) of Japan.” When it bought Viber in 2014, Rakuten made clear its plans to eventually integrate the app into Rakuten’s ecosystem.

Just ask Rakuten. The Tokyo-based ecommerce firm was relatively unknown outside of its native Japan until this year, when its partnerships with Barcelona and the Warriors announced the company to the world in a way that only sports sponsorship can.

Jacinto Roca wants to focus more on movies than competitors, promising to offer content renters and buyers "your cinema at home."
Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten has rebranded its video-on-demand service Wuaki, which is available in a dozen European countries and Japan, as Rakuten TV as it looks to challenge the likes of Netflix and Amazon.
And it has kicked off a four-year global sponsorship with Spanish soccer club FC Barcelona, which will feature the company name on its players' jerseys, among other things.
Rakuten TV founder and CEO Jacinto Roca during a London visit talked to THR about his plans for the online entertainment service, its competitors and the benefits of the Barcelona partnership.
