New York, July 21 (Bloomberg) -- Macromedia Inc., a maker of software used for designing Web sites, pared its losses in extended trading after suffering its second worst decline when fiscal-first quarter sales trailed some analysts' forecasts.

Macromedia rose as much as 2 1/16 to 81 1/8 in trading of 373,200 shares following the 4 p.m. New York close of the Nasdaq stock market. The shares, which had more than tripled during the past 12 months, fell 29 11/16, or 27 percent, to 79 1/16 during the normal trading session.

The software maker, based in San Francisco, lost more than $1.5 billion in market value earlier in the day after it said sales rose 85 percent to $94.8 million, failing to beat some estimates that were as high as $96.9 million.
