For Tuesday's version of the solar winners session, it's looking early like two upstart Chinese solar module makers and one U.S. inverter company are the stocks with positive momentum, yet big gains from the pre-market session were quickly moderating for these solar stock plays.

The Chinese solar module makers are being joined by U.S. solar inverter maker SatCon(SATC_), which announced that it had won a contract to supply inverters for a 63 megawatt project in Puerto Rico.

SatCon was up more than 5% in early trading, with Jinko and Solarfun shares higher by between 3% and 4% in early trading.

What: Satcon Technology (Nasdaq: SATC) shares jumped 10% in intraday trading on news that the company was selected as a supplier for a 63-megawatt solar plant in Puerto Rico.

So what: The installation will use Satcon Solstice 500 kilowatt solutions, and it's anticipated it will generate 116 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. The device is the "first complete power-harvesting and array management solution" for large-scale projects.

Now what: If the installation is successful, this product would provide a big opportunity for Satcon in the growing solar market. Installation sizes are increasing, bringing increasingly complex energy management systems. This is a step in the right direction for Satcon and could lead to continued revenue growth, just as we saw in the second quarter.

Satcon to install solar power station in Delaware for SEG

Sustainable Energy Generation, or SEG, Group has selected Satcon Technology for a 1.2MW solar power station at a water treatment facility in Kent County, Delaware.
The 1.2MW site will reportedly deploy six of Satcon's PowerGate Plus solar photovoltaic (PV) inverters, along with six Satcon's Solstice systems.
SEG will install 5,850 poly-crystalline silicon based solar modules and the total plant is expected to produce 1.4GWh of clean energy annually, avoiding the release of over 4,000lbs of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, as well as 1.4 million lbs of CO2, from a fossil fuel plant of the same size, SEG said.
Pierre D'Amours, president and COO of SEG, said: "The Kent County Water Treatment project has given us the ability to showcase the state of the art in solar technologies. Satcon has been a close partner of SEG for many years. Solstice is a giant leap forward for large scale solar system innovation, enabling us to significantly increase overall system power production while gaining system design flexibility."

•Company Announces Agreement Regarding Conversion of Series C Preferred Stock to Common Stock

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Satcon Technology Corporation® (NASDAQ CM:SATC), a leading provider of utility-grade power conversion solutions for the renewable energy market, today provided preliminary unaudited financial results for revenue, gross margin, operating profit and net income for the Company’s third quarter ended September 30, 2010 in advance of its earnings call scheduled for October 28, 2010.

For the third quarter of 2010, Satcon expects to report revenues of between $56 million and $58 million, an increase of over 450% from its revenues for the comparable period last year, and ahead of its earlier provided guidance of quarterly revenues of between $43 million and $47 million for the period. Satcon’s revenues for the nine months ended September 30, 2010 were in the range of $98 million to $100 million, an increase of approximately 220% from the Company’s revenues during the same nine-month period during fiscal 2009. Satcon also expects to report a gross margin percentage for the third quarter of 2010 of between 26% and 28%, which percentage would be in line with its previous guidance. Satcon anticipates it will report positive operating income for the third quarter of 2010.

The Company’s positive operating income for the third quarter does not reflect the impact of interest, taxes and other non-operating expenses, as well as non-cash charges such as foreign exchange gains or losses, changes in the fair value of outstanding warrants, and dividends and accretion of Series C preferred stock. Satcon expects that the net impact of these non-operating charges will result in a net loss attributable to common stockholders for the third quarter of between $0.02 and $0.03 per share.

In addition, Satcon reported that its bookings recorded during the third quarter were approximately $78 million. Satcon’s bookings through September 30, 2010 total over $200 million, an increase of 465% over bookings recorded during the same nine-month period last year. These year-to-date bookings represent over 800 MW of orders for Satcon’s products, with 49% of these bookings coming from North America, 28% from Europe and 23% from Asia.

At October 15, 2010, the Company’s backlog, which consists of purchase orders with customers expected to be shipped during the balance of 2010 and through September 30, 2011, was approximately $124 million. Backlog from North America represented 58% of orders to be delivered, Asia contributed 24% to the total, while Europe contributed 18%.

Satcon also reported that it expects its revenues for the fourth quarter of 2010 to be in the range of $70 million to $75 million and anticipates achieving a gross margin percentage for the fourth quarter of between 28% and 32%.

To generate cash to fund its continued growth, the Company also announced that it is offering to sell shares of its common stock in an underwritten public offering. The offering is subject to market conditions and there can be no assurance as to whether or when the offering may be completed, or as to the actual size or terms of the offering. Jefferies & Company, Inc. is acting as the sole book-running manager for the offering.

On October 15, 2010, in order to simplify its capital structure, the Company entered into an agreement with RockPort Capital Partners II, L.P. and NGP Energy Technology Partners, L.P., the holders of the Company’s outstanding Series C Preferred Stock, pursuant to which Rockport and NGP have agreed to convert their shares of Series C Preferred Stock into approximately 27,665,859 shares of the Company’s common stock simultaneously with the consummation of the offering described above. The 27,665,859 shares represent the number of shares of the Company’s common stock underlying the Series C Preferred Stock pursuant to the existing terms of the Series C Preferred Stock. To induce the Series C Preferred Stock holders to convert their shares, the Company will pay the Series C Preferred Stock holders an aggregate of $1.25 million in cash upon conversion.

2434 Postings, 6683 Tage From HollandMicroinverters: A Solar Market Thats On Fire

    #96
22.10.10 08:27
Building clean-technology companies with real revenue on relatively little investment is increasingly possible, and it’s happening in the small-but-exploding market for electronics that boost the power output of solar systems.

Enphase Energy Inc.Several venture-backed companies are rushing in with new products as they play catch-up to the sector’s leader, Enphase Energy Inc. Whether the competitors will be able to gain ground on Enphase - and what will happen once bigger corporates swoop down on the space - remains to be seen.

“The market is on fire,” said Jason Matlof, partner with Battery Ventures, which backed SolarBridge Technologies Inc., an Enphase competitor, in 2007.

All solar panels produce power in direct current, which must be converted into alternating current used on the grid. This is typically done by central inverters, made by companies like Satcon Technology Corp., SMA Solar Technology AG and Power-One Inc., which deal with DC current that is pooled from a string of connected solar panels. The advantage of central inverters is that they are cheap.

The problems with this method of power conversion, however, include relying too much on individual panels. If one panel is shaded, for example, the output of the entire string of panels drops. A malfunction of the central inverter, which is considered the weakest link in the entire solar system, also would cause output from the whole system to disappear. Finally, there’s lots of wiring and installation time required, as well as fire hazards associated with high voltage central inverters.

Companies like Enphase are addressing the shortfalls of central inverters by making microinverters, which go on the back of individual solar panels, and do the conversion at that level. There are also companies that make small converters, again located at individual panels, that smooth out the current and help boost the output, but then connect to central inverters.

The entire solar inverter market last year was about $3 billion, according to Ash Sharma, research director with IMS Research. Of that total, microinverters represented just $20 million. This year, he said, he expects the total inverter market to nearly double, with microinverters and converters taking up about $80 million to $90 million in sales.

“Overall in five years it [the new technology] will be less than 10% of the overall [inverter market], but the market itself is growing so quickly it will become a fairly large industry,” said Sharma.

Enphase Chief Executive Paul Nahi sees an exact reverse of that vision.

“I think that central inverters will be a small niche in the next four-five years,” said Nahi. “It’s clear that the movement toward a microinverter is a directional shift in the industry that cannot be stopped,” he said.
