U.N.: AIDS Stigma in Vietnam Among Worst
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam is among the worst in the world and must be overcome to control the epidemic, a top United Nations official said Monday.
After visiting Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong and Hanoi, UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director Kathleen Cravero said if Vietnam does not reverse the way people think about the disease, it could block attempts to help those infected with the virus.
"I've visited over 50 countries and the problem of stigma and discrimination is as great or greater in Vietnam than in any country I've visited," she said. "If people fear stigma and discrimination ... they won't seek testing, they won't seek services, they won't seek any help at all. It will drive the epidemic underground."
HIV/AIDS often gets lumped in with Vietnam's so-called "social evils" policy, which also includes drug use and prostitution. International aid workers have pushed for the government to stop using the term as one way to lessen the stigma.
Cravero said there's still time to fix the problem, and she applauded Vietnam's comprehensive national strategy as a method of handling the epidemic. The plan is a long-term approach to dealing with the epidemic, including prevention and care.
But she stressed the importance of implementing it quickly and said people living with the disease must take a leading role alongside high-ranking government leaders and organizations.
"All too often we have national strategies in countries that end up on shelves as very readable documents that don't mean very much on the ground," she said. "Now is the time - in the coming months and the next two years - that Vietnam must take this excellent strategy and make it real for the people of Vietnam from the very north to the very south."
She also encouraged the Communist government to create a national AIDS council with enough political clout to force more people to become actively involved in attacking the problem.
Vietnam's infections have largely been contained to high-risk groups such as intravenous drug users and sex workers, but if left unchecked that rate is on pace to increase eightfold to 1 million by 2010.
Vietnam was one of the 15 countries recently selected to receive emergency funding from the United States' US$15 billion global AIDS plan to try to prevent the epidemic from taking off in the general population.
Vietnam has recorded more than 80,000 HIV-positive cases, of which nearly 13,000 have developed full-blown AIDS and more than 7,000 have died, according to the Ministry of Health. However, health officials believe the actual number of HIV-infected people is closer to 200,000.

Television stations in China on Thursday began airing a series of public service announcements featuring NBA star Yao Ming and former NBA star Magic Johnson aimed at promoting HIV/AIDS awareness in China, the South China Morning Post reports. The four PSAs show Yao and Johnson, who tested HIV-positive in 1991, playing basketball together, embracing and sharing a meal to show that HIV cannot be spread by casual contact. The PSAs were aired for the first time on Thursday to coincide with the NBA's first-ever game in China, in which Yao's team, the Houston Rockets, played the Sacramento Kings. Kathy Behrens, NBA's senior vice president of community relations, said, "Yao Ming and Magic Johnson are internationally admired," adding, "Both men generously agreed to join us in this effort to utilize the popularity of NBA basketball in China and deliver a lifesaving message: that HIV can be stopped if everyone learns the facts about preventing the disease and that people with HIV deserve support, compassion and care." Dr. David Ho, an HIV/AIDS researcher with the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, which is a sponsor of the PSAs, said, "China is taking action to address HIV/AIDS, but the epidemic there is still growing rapidly," adding, "Education is key to slowing this epidemic in China." Ho estimates that more than 200 million Chinese people between ages 15 and 24 do not know how to prevent HIV infection (Woo, South China Morning Post, 10/15). The Chinese government estimates that 840,000 HIV-positive live people in the country and that 80,000 people have AIDS. The United Nations estimates that there are about one million HIV-positive people living in China (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 10/12).

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Friday urged Zambians to get tested for HIV, Xinhuanet reports. Mwanawasa said that the epidemic will "wipe out the country" if the country's citizens do not "take it upon themselves" to fight the disease, according to Zambia's Daily Mail, Xinhuanet reports. Mwanawasa said that national development has been slowed and the number of orphans has risen in part because people do not undergo HIV testing. In Zambia, about 16% of the 11 million people who are thought to be HIV-positive and there are approximately 620,000 AIDS orphans, 6% of whom are living on the streets (Xinhuanet, 10/16

HIV/STD urine tests in the privacy of your home
Soon to provide access to anonymous and confidential HIV testing to people who may not otherwise have access to it.
The crux of the issue around opposing in-home tests is not an issue of in-person counseling or no counseling. The question is around the appropriateness of telephone/internet counseling and whose decision it is to determine the appropriateness and suitability of this type of counseling to meet individual needs. We believe that this decision rests with the individual.
Laws do not prevent privacy crimes from occurring and cannot stop power imbalances.
There are a number of myths around in-person counseling that need to be acknowledged. It is true that counseling services are not uniformly living up to high standards.
Urine HIV/STD Tests empower more people with knowledge about their status, the first step in taking taking control of one’s health. Urine HIV/STD testing brings this issue more intimately to the home.
Stay tuned more details on the way.

Zacks Rank for CALYPTE BIOMED (HIV):
[ 3 ] HOLD
Stocks with a Zacks Rank 3 are considered a HOLD. Unfortunately Wall Street firms have tainted the world “Hold” and most people take that to mean, “Sell”. The Zacks Rank has an equal number of Buy versus Sell ratings and thus our Hold rating means that a stock should perform relatively the same as the overall market.
Using a 1 - 5 rating system, Zacks lowest ranked stocks are ranked #5. Such stocks are considered a STRONG SELL. Unlike brokerage ratings where only 1% of stocks are considered a sell, Zacks rates 20% of all stocks a sell or strong sell with its #4 and #5 rankings.
Future Price Implications of #3 Rank
Stocks ranked by Zacks as #3 are expected to perform similarly to the market over the next 30 to 90 days.

I'm taking the subway downtown from mid-town and I see a poster on the subway platform of a sacred child looking upward at her dad. The poster reads: "If you think telling your partner to get tested is hard, try telling your kid you've got AIDS...Get the new Ready Rapid Test...Phone 1-866-HIV TEST
So I phoned. It is a tri-state testing headquarters for HIV 1 & 2 located in NJ. They are currently using OraSure's rapid blood test. However, the attendent informed me they have been advised that a new rapid urine test will be out soon and will replace the current test being used. She said she did not know the name of the new product, but that it is coming soon. Any idea who this will be? All the Best...

DUBLIN, Ireland and NEW YORK, Oct 20, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
Trinity Biotech plc (NASDAQ: TRIB) a leading developer and manufacturer of
diagnostic products for the point-of-care and clinical laboratory markets, today
announced results for the quarter ended September 30, 2004.
Revenues in Quarter 3 increased 6.9% to US$21.4 million compared to US$20.1
million in Quarter 2.
Compared to the same period last year revenues have increased by 26.8%.
Gross profit amounted to US$11.0 million in the period, representing a gross
margin of 51.3%. This compares to a gross profit of US$10.3 million in Quarter 2
and a gross margin of 51.4%.
R&D expenses have increased from US$1.2 million in Quarter 2 to US$1.3 million
in the current quarter. SG&A expenses have remained constant quarter on quarter
at US$7.1 million. The increase in SG&A costs from US$4.2 million in Quarter 3
last year to US$7.1 million in the current year is primarily attributable to the
increased marketing and sales team in the USA.
The net effect of the above factors results in EBITDA of US$3.1 million for the
quarter and an EPS of 2.68 US cents.
Commenting on the results, Rory Nealon, Chief Financial Officer, said "Our
revenue for the quarter has increased 6.9% over the previous quarter which is
the equivalent of 28% on an annualised basis. As there have been no acquisitions
during the quarter this 6.9% is attributable to organic growth. Approximately
50% of revenue growth occurred in the USA due to a combination of increased
sales of our recently approved HIV product and the effect of our recently
expanded marketing and sales team. We are especially pleased that we have
controlled our SG&A costs during the quarter which have remained constant at
US$7.1 million."
Ronan O'Caoimh CEO commented "We are particularly pleased with Trinity Biotech's
Quarter 3 results. 2004 has been a year of transition for the company. We have
invested significantly in an expanded US marketing and sales team which we have
increased from 30 people to 95 people. This expanded team has been tasked with
launching our Unigold HIV product, converting customers who were previously
supplied by our US distributor, increasing our penetration of the coagulation
market, and integrating our recent Adaltis acquisition. We have successfully
integrated our infectious disease reagents with the Adaltis instrument platform
which for the first time enables Trinity to provide a complete product offering
to our infectious disease customers. Our investment in the US market will be a
key driver in the growth of our business in the coming years."
Trinity Biotech develops, acquires, manufactures and markets over 500 diagnostic
products for the point-of-care and clinical laboratory segments of the
diagnostic market. The broad line of test kits are used to detect infectious
diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, blood coagulation disorders, and
autoimmune diseases. Trinity Biotech sells worldwide in over 80 countries
through its own salesforce and a network of international distributors and
strategic partners. For further information please see the Company's website:

The Asia-Pacific region risks an AIDS crisis similar in scale to Africa's crisis unless governments across the region step up efforts to combat the spread of the disease, the United Nations has warned.
A study by the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) and UNAIDS, said that there were over seven million people infected with the virus in the Asia-Pacific region with half a million dying of the disease each year.
A total of 10 million people in the Asia-Pacific region will be newly-infected by the disease between 2004 and 2010 and the annual death toll will rise by over 750,000 by 2010, the study added.
Both the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) "need to get the action much accelerated," said Kathleen Cravero, deputy executive director of the UN agency battling the AIDS spread.
She told a forum in the Philippine capital that the ASEAN region "had made good progress in the last couple of years but like most of Asia, it is moving too late and too slow".
"The time is now for regional institutions to step up and accelerate their action at a regional level and with individual countries," Ms Cravero said.
"We believe the economic, political and regional institutions in Asia have a great responsibility now because Asia has a window of opportunity to make sure an AIDS epidemic never takes hold ... as it did in Africa," she said.
She called on these institutions to provide resources to individual countries to deal with AIDS and for the national leaders to take a role in combating the spread of the virus.
"Those [APEC] leaders should stand up, these leaders should be promoting strong advocacy, knowledge and awareness," at their annual summits, she added.
Ms Cravero praised the Asian Development Bank for allocating funds to help in controlling AIDS, an incurable disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that kills by weakening the body's immune system.
ASEAN includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
APEC includes most of these countries as well as Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Taiwan and the United States.
