Analyst sees FuelCell Energy poised for large deals
FuelCell Energy (FCEL) is poised to obtain "sizeable" contracts and could reach profitability, research firm Stifel wrote in a note to investors earlier today. FuelCell Energy develops fuel cell power plants. WHAT'S NEW: FuelCell's statements about large contracts during its first quarter earnings conference were "encouraging," wrote Stifel analyst Jeffrey Osborne. Specifically, the company said that it was "waiting on final customer and regulatory approval," adding that "inquiries and activity levels globally remain high," noted Osborne. FuelCell is well-positioned to obtain close to 100 megawatts of large scale projects in the U.S., the analyst believes. In coming months FuelCell will obtain "sizable" deals that will increase investors' interest in the stock and put the company on the path to profitability, forecast the analyst. Osborne hiked his price target on the stock to $4.10 from $2.30 and kept a Buy rating on the shares. Taking a much more pessimistic view on FuelCell was research firm Ardour, which downgraded the stock to Hold from Buy in a note to investors earlier today. FuelCell reported Q1 profits and revenue that were in-line with expectations, but its backlog continued to decline and its product gross margin fell, Ardour noted. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Recently the shares of fuel cell makers have spiked after Morgan Stanley speculated that a battery factory being launched by Tesla (TSLA) could enable utility customers to stop using the power grid. Additionally, fuel cell supplier Plug Power (PLUG) last month revealed that it had sold 1,738 hydrogen fuel cells to Wal-Mart (WMT). In a report published yesterday that was critical of Plug Power, Citron Research said the fair value of its stock is 50c and that "with no fundamental changes now or expected in its business model," Plug Power "has 'bust' written all over it."

Yesterday, all things fuel-cell related–think Plug Power (PLUG) and FuelCell Energy (FCEL)–got hammered as investors soured on the once-hot sector.
REUTERS
Shares of Plug Power plummeted 42% yesterday, Ballard Power Systems (BLDP) tumbled 26%, Hydrogenics (HYGS) fell 15% and FuellCell Energy fell 17% even as it reported in-line earnings.
After a day to digest yesterday’s action, Cowen’s Robert Stone has downgraded the shares of FuelCell Energy. He explains why:
We believe the recently completed fuel cell parks in Bridgeport, CT and Korea should open a $12B DG opportunity, and hydrogen co-generation adds $3B. Orders in H1 should drive Q4:F14 revenue and GM to EBITDA break-even. We raise our PT to $2.70 (vs. $2.00), but lower our rating to Market Perform (2) from Outperform (1) as we feel expected progress this year is priced in around the current level.
Stifel’s Jeffrey Osborne and team raised their price target to $4.10 from $2.30 following yesterday’s earnings report from FuelCell Energy. They explain why:
FuelCell Energy shares have seen strong performance recently on renewed interest in the fuel-cell sector more broadly and commentary from utilities in the U.S. and abroad around seeking base load distributed generation resources. Management’s tone around large contracts, core to our thesis, was encouraging, with the team noting they are “waiting on final customer and regulatory approval” and “inquiries and activity levels globally remain high.” We are tracking close to 100MW of large scale ( 5MW) projects in the U.S. in which we believe the company is well positioned given generation costs of ~$0.10 kWh and the base load nature of their product. We expect sizable wins over the coming months to drive further investor interest in the stock and pave a path to profitability.
HOUSTON, March 11 (Reuters) - NRG Energy Inc's said its retail electric U.S. customer base will grow by 30 percent with Tuesday's agreement to acquire the retail power business of Dominion Resources Inc for an undisclosed amount. (more to the article go see)

Fuel Cell's (FCEL) successful offering of 25.3 million shares for $1.25 in January also boosted investors' interest in Ballard Power. China plans to shut down 50,000 small coal-fired furnaces. This news further ignited the share price of both Fuel Cell and Ballard. China is implementing a clean water action plan. The market could reasonably speculate that China's clean energy plan could include solutions provided by companies like Fuel Cell and Ballard Power. As countries replace coal with clean energy, it will bode well for Fuel Cell's profit margin and revenue.
