To brokers and the research house Edison has started coverage of Ethiopia- focused gold junior KEFI Minerals (LON:KEFI) with a bullish assessment of its value.

The mine developer, which hopes to have its Tulu Kapi mine in production in late next year, is worth 1.93p a share currently, rising to 2.82p from 2019.

That compares with the current share price of 0.81p (up 4.5% on the day).

Tulu Kapi will be an open-pit mine extracting 80-90,000 ounces of gold a year at an all-sustaining cost of US$779 an ounce – making it one of the lowest quartile producers in the world.

It is expected to cost US$128mln to create – though Edison’s Charles Gibson expects investors to have to stump up no more than around US$20mln, minimising dilution.

Earlier this week, copper futures fell below $5,000 per tonne ($2.27 per pound). The price has halved since its peak in 2011. While the majority of copper producers (about 75% by our estimates) can still produce copper profitably at these levels, the trajectory of the price decline is telling about the economic situation not just in China, but arguably all over the world. In other words, it’s not just the developed world that should prepare for slow growth prospects going forward. WTI crude oil is down over 20%, gold and silver are down over 5%, copper is down 20%, and nickel has fallen 30% (all YTD and in USD according to Bloomberg).

To mining – and KEFI Minerals (LON:KEFI) provided a double dose of good news as it revealed planned output from its Ethiopia gold project has grown significantly and said a winning bidder has emerged for the contract to mine the Tulu Kapi deposit.

Tulu Kapi is now expected to produce 100,000 ounces of the precious metal a year over a decade rather than 75,000 ounces over 13 years.

In other gold-related news, Noricum Gold (LON:NMG) has hired a mining and exploration expert as senior advisor to help it to upgrade and convert the current resource at the Bolnisi copper and gold project in Georgia to JORC standard.

China Nonferrous Gold (LON:CNG) has awarded the processing and smelting agreement for its Pakrut gold project in Tajikistan.

We are encouraged in the rapid pace of development as well as any potential reductions in the project funding requirement, especially on the back of the recently announced increase in average annual production. We look forward to further announcements regarding the formalisation of financing options and the selection of construction contractor as well as mine contractor, which is scheduled for Q4 2015.
