Chinese Companies Say They Can’t Afford to Pay Workers Now
A growing number of China’s private companies have cut wages, delayed paychecks or stopped paying staff completely, saying that the economic toll of the coronavirus has left them unable to cover their labor costs.
To slow the spread of the virus that’s claimed more than 2,000 lives, Chinese authorities and big employers have encouraged people to stay home. Shopping malls and restaurants are empty; amusement parks and theaters are closed; non-essential travel is all but forbidden.
What’s good for containment has been lousy for business. With classes canceled at a coding-and-robotics school in Hangzhou, employees will lose 30% to 50% of their wages.
“A week of unpaid leave is very painful,” said Jason Lam, 32, who was furloughed from his job as a chef in a high-end restaurant in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui neighborhood. “I don’t have enough income to cover my spending this month.”...
Across China, companies are telling workers that there’s no money for them -- or that they shouldn’t have to pay full salaries to quarantined employees who don’t come to work...
Groupon Inc. plummeted to an all-time low after delivering worse-than-expected results and announcing plans to stop selling goods -- a retreat for a company that once aspired to be a major shopping service. Earnings declined to 7 cents a share last quarter, excluding some items, Groupon said on Tuesday.

Diamond Princess cruise ship captain Stefano Ravera has just made an announcement onboard the cruise liner, reporting that two passengers have died of the novel coronavirus, as heard on a video recording supplied to CNN by a passenger.
The two passengers who died were in their 80s and had been in hospital in Japan, but no further information is known about them at this stage.
There are 624 confirmed cases of the virus linked to the stricken ship, docked in Yokohama, Japan. Passengers who tested negative are still disembarking from the ship today.

"..During a speech on Wednesday, President Xi declared that China was making progress in the 'People's War' against the virus.
Meanwhile, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference on Wednesday that the data from China appeared to show a decline in new cases, but "outside China, we have seen a steady drip of new cases,..."
jedenfalls hilft das den chinesischen Aktien...

It Gets Surprisingly Ugly: US Freight Shipments Plunge 9.4%, Steepest since 2009
But the coronavirus impact has not been felt yet; that will come later.
Shipment volume in the US by truck, rail, air, and barge plunged 9.4% in January 2020 compared to the already weak January a year earlier, according to the Cass Freight Index for Shipments. It was the 14th month in a row of year-over-year declines, and the steepest since October 2009, during the Financial Crisis:
The Cass Freight Index tracks shipment volume of consumer goods and industrial products and supplies by all modes of transportation – truck, rail, air, and barge – but it does not track bulk commodities, such as grains or coal.
In December, when the index had plunged 7.4% year-over-year, the steepest drop since November 2009, the calendar got blamed because Christmas fell on a Wednesday, as it does regularly. In January, the year-over-year drop of 9.4% was even worse, from an even weaker month a year earlier, and this time, there is no calendar to blame....
Finished product production -7.4% w/w
Mill stocks +18% w/w
Trader stocks -19% w/w
According to Goldman's Adam Gillard, the above implies full country apparent demand is down a massive -66% y/y.
auch die UBS:
...Here are some of the Swiss bank's key observations:
Coal consumption and property sales: Daily coal consumption of 6 large IPPs has been only 60% of average level of that in the same period in 2017-2019 (Fig 3). The daily property sales volume of 30 major cities is currently only around 10% of 2017-2019 average, but already up from a week earlier (Fig 4).
.....Passenger volume: Latest daily passenger volume is only 19% of that in the same period during CNY travel season in 2019 (Fig 12). Overall, total numbers of passengers carried has been around 18%, or 82% below, the 2019 level!.....
The real estate market remains frozen. As Goldman notes, daily property sales volume in 30 major cities over the past week has climbed up to 13% of the average level in the previous 5 years. It was better than the 0% it was for much of the previous week....."

"Confirmed case" definition changes: All official coronavirus cases from today must now be formally diagnosed before they are added to the totals.
The National Health Commission earlier explained that confirmed cases in Hubei province would now only include people who had positive lab test results from patient samples that match in nucleic acid and genetic sequencing for the virus.

...as stocks keep busting records, our call of the day from Goldman Sachs is saying that [Anleger seien hinsichtlich der Virengefahr zu selbstgefällig].
“In the nearer term…we believe the greater risk is that the impact of the coronavirus on earnings may well be underestimated in current stock prices, suggesting that the risks of a correction are high,” chief global equity strategist Peter Oppenheimer told clients.
The virus history books — SARS in 2003 — reveal that setbacks for markets are often temporary. But China’s economy is “six times bigger now than it was then,” with Chinese tourism a 0.4% chunk of global GDP and missed work days in China equal to an two-month unplanned break for the entire U.S., he notes.
