American Express Announces McDonald's To Accept ExpressPay For Contactless Payments
1/20/2006
American Express today announced McDonald's USA as the latest national merchant partner to accept ExpressPay from American Express. Cardholders can use ExpressPay at more than 12,000 McDonald's restaurants nationwide.
ExpressPay from American Express is a fast contactless payment option that consists of a secure computer chip powered by radio frequency technology. The feature is an easy-to-use alternative to cash for making everyday purchases at merchants where speed and convenience are important -- such as quick service restaurants, supermarkets, drug stores and gas stations.
American Express was the first issuer to launch contactless cards nationally with the rollout of Blue from American Express® with the ExpressPay feature in June 2005. ExpressPay is also embedded in the Clear from American Express Card and available via a key fob that can be linked to any American Express® Card. Users simply hold the Card or key fob with ExpressPay next to a special reader near the register to complete a purchase.
Payment is authorized in seconds and no signature is required for most purchases. The computer chip enables end-to-end transaction security. Blue and Clear from American Express Cards also have a magnetic strip and function as traditional credit cards.
"ExpressPay from American Express is an innovative cashless payment option that's value-added for our customers," said Jim Sappington, Vice President, Information Technology for McDonald's USA. "The technology is fast and convenient and that's exactly what McDonald's customers are looking for."
"We are delighted about our partnership with McDonald's to further build ExpressPay's momentum in the marketplace and help customers gain even greater speed and convenience when visiting McDonald's," said David Bonalle, Vice President and General Manager of Advanced Payments for American Express. "The adoption of contactless payments is growing rapidly as consumers and more and more merchants across a wide range of industries begin to use this new technology and experience the benefits."
American Express has been working with contactless payments since 2002. The company's initial pilots involved thousands of consumers making more than a million transactions with ExpressPay at hundreds of merchants. Test results showed that, on average, ExpressPay transactions are 63 percent faster than using cash. Market research with pilot participants also confirmed that consumers view convenience and simplicity of use as two of the major benefits. For merchants, important benefits include reduced transaction and service time for customers on the go. Also, the ExpressPay reader uses the merchants' existing network infrastructure, so the system can be simply installed without lengthy or costly upgrades.
American Express continues to sign national and regional contactless payment merchants. Merchants now accepting ExpressPay include: McDonald's, AMC Theatres, Boater's World, CVS/pharmacy®, Duane Reade, Loews Cineplex Entertainment, Meijer retail supercenters, Regal Entertainment Group, Ritz Camera and Sheetz.

By JEREMY OLSHAN January 31, 2006 -- Straphangers may never have to "please swipe again."
This spring some subway riders will get to toss out their MetroCards and zip through turnstiles with a wave of their credit card or key chain.
The MTA is teaming up with MasterCard and Citigroup to put "smart card" readers at turnstiles on the 4, 5 and 6 lines in Manhattan, as well as two key outerborough hubs.
During a six-month trial paid for by the two companies, Citibank will offer certain customers debit/credit cards and matching key-chain fobs embedded with special chips that can be read by radio...
Monday, January 30 2006
Some New York City subway riders will get a feel for contactless payments when a six-month MasterCard/Citi trial gets underway this spring. Participants will be able to use either their Paypass-equipped credit card or a payment tag that fits on their key chains to tap their way through the subway turnstiles.
Fast, Convenient Contactless Payments to Provide Trial Participants More Time to Reach Their Destinations
PURCHASE, N.Y--MasterCard International and Citi today announced that they will be working with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and MTA New York City Transit to conduct a trial of contactless payments in select New York City subway stations with pre-selected Citi customers. The trial is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2006 and is expected to last approximately six months.
Contactless payments offer consumers a fast and convenient way to pay. Using contactless payment technology, powered by MasterCard PayPass, participants in the subway trial will be able to pay for their fare at the point of entry by simply tapping their new Citi MasterCard card or payment tag on a specially equipped reader mounted on a subway turnstile. These specially equipped readers will feature a graphic that is unique to the trial, so that participants will know which turnstiles accept their cards or tags. These cards and payment tags will also be useable at any MasterCard PayPass merchant location. The payment tag conveniently fits on any key chain, and both the tag and card allow for everyday small purchases to be completed quickly, securely and easily, without needing to fumble for cash and coins.
The trial will take place at select Lexington Avenue Line 4 5 6 stations. During the trial, participating customers will have the pay-per-ride option, including the 20% bonus, available to them. No passes or transfers to buses will be available.
"By taking part in this trial with MasterCard and Citi, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is continuing its ongoing exploration of electronic payment technology," said Metropolitan Transportation Authority Executive Director Katherine N. Lapp. "Contactless payments hold the promise of simplifying fare payment for customers who travel throughout the MTA network, while also providing for operating efficiencies and cost savings."
"Citi is dedicated to providing best in class products and services to our customers, as well as deploying innovative solutions that offer greater speed and convenience at multiple points of distribution, such as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority subway stations," said Amy Radin, Chief Innovation Officer, Global Consumer Group, Citigroup. "As a global company with roots in New York City, we are pleased to join the MTA and MasterCard to learn if our debit and credit cardholders across the banking spectrum will find contactless payments to be a positive benefit in their commuter experience."
"The goal of this trial is to evaluate the speed and convenience that contactless payments can provide to New York's busy commuters and to test the consumer experience," said T.J. Sharkey, Vice President, Business Development, U.S. Acceptance, MasterCard International. "As anyone who has ever commuted through the subway system knows well, time is a critical factor.
"A successful trial would ultimately benefit all of MasterCard's customer financial institutions as well by opening up another acceptance channel for their contactless payments programs," added Sharkey.

Commentary: Buying into strong, steady uptrends
By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader
Last Update: 12:43 PM ET Feb. 2, 2006
LOS ANGELES (TechTrader) -- Technical analysts look for patterns in price movements, and one pattern I like is simple: stocks in strong, steady uptrends!
Legendary trader Jesse Livermore once said, "Buy high and sell higher!" I couldn't agree more. No use looking to catch a falling knife. Rather, catch a rising star!
Similar to Sigma, On Track Innovations (OTIV:16.27, +0.65, +4.2%) has recently broken through a multi-year, multiple top. The stock has actually moved into all-time high territory, though it has only been public for a little more than three years.
While the angle of ascent was quite steep in January, with the stock up about 20% for the month, OTIV may just be getting started. It only this past month broke out of what has been a two-year base, with multiple tops at around 15. The underlying technicals and supporting volume indicators have been surging along with the price.
My mid-channel target over the next four to six weeks is 25, with the top of the channel pointing to the mid-30s. Short-term support is at 15 and then 13 3/4, below which traders may want to place stops.
