Using graphene, scientists develop a less toxic way to rust-proof steel

Support gibt es von multi Milliarden Konzern Tata Steel (> 25 Mrd. USD Umsatz), einem der größten Stahlproduzenten der Erde - wenn das keine Ansage ist!
"Tata Steel, an international company that has provided past funding for Banerjee's projects, has been helping the scientists test larger sample sizes, Banerjee said.."

Two-Dimensional Layered Materials for High-Performance Electronics
May 23, 2012 -- (Source: Science Daily) -- Graphene is the wonder material that could solve the problem of making ever faster computers and smaller mobile devices when current silicon microchip technology hits an inevitable wall. Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms in a tight hexagonal arrangement, is a highly researched material due to its incredible electronic properties, with theoretical speeds 100 times greater than silicon. But putting the material into a microchip that could outperform current silicon technology has proven difficult..

Ultrafast phase changes observed in graphite
May 23, 2012 -- Stanford, CA (Source: Photonics) -- Graphite once again has been shown to have ground-breaking potential due to its ability to phase change from a liquid to a warm-dense plasma in just 40 fs..

Graphite Demand Seen Surging from Fuel Cells, Nuclear Reactors, Graphene
Demand for graphite is rising and is expected to mushroom as this allotrope of carbon – most commonly known as part of lead pencils – finds new applications. Currently, three growing applications of this mineral – lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells, nuclear reactors, and the potential uses of wonder material graphene – are making the quest for graphite heat up..

Only a Few Graphite Companies Will Win: Mickey Fulp
The rapidly expanding list of junior mining companies chasing graphite projects will produce only a few successes but currently high graphite prices and the boom in the sector should continue – unlike other bubbles..

“You want it to be high-grade. What do I mean by high-grade? I would put a minimum grade that I would most generally be looking for at greater than 5% as carbon as graphite. You want it to have a high percentage of flake. We’ve seen the price differential that has occurred so you want to make sure that it's mainly a flake graphite deposit and not an amorphous graphite deposit. The flake size is not nearly as important as the percentage of flake.."

Da gehe ich mit ihm konform!
Weitere gute comments auf S.3:
"..You wanted it in my case to be an open pit mine because it's cheaper to mine and you want a low strip ratio -- the strip ratio being the ratio of waste you have to mine to ore that you mine. And finally the metallurgical process. As I’ve already told you, you have to produce a high-grade concentrate of more or less ± 95% to command a good price for your graphite..”

Ebenfalls hervorgehoben:
"..As graphite companies near production, Fulp said he believes there will be “extreme merger and acquisition activity” either through offtake contracts or strategic alliances.,business combinations. “I see the synthetic and carbon fiber companies being major players in this industry,” he said “I see a couple of juniors that will develop graphite mines very early on in the process will eventually probably go and cherry pick some of the struggling companies as the bubble starts to burst. What I envision is completely integrated mine to market companies for the most part.”

Graphene’s Solar Advances
Solar technology, getting cheap electricity by converting the sun’s energy via solar devices, is one of the big future hopes for green renewable energy in the century ahead. There are 3 main competing technologies at work, although I have a hunch that they will conflate in the years ahead. The furthest advanced is solar-thermal technology, where mirrors or mirror like surfaces focus the sun’s energy in heating a central core, which exchanges its heat in a heat exchanger to produce steam to run steam turbine generators. At present such large projects generally require large subsidy..

"China produces about 70% of the world’s graphite alone but is experiencing slowing growth and reserve depletion..
..
The nation is also continuing to consolidate and reduce the number of graphite mines in Hunan province from 230 to 20 mines which will constrain global supply further with a loss of around 100,000 tonnes per annum, or 10% of annual global graphite supply, forecast.
..
Based on demand and supply fundamentals it is unlikely that graphite will return to its past lows and the price of graphite has the potential to rise even further.."

Graphene Handling Advance
This article is the first to show that cutting forces vary with lattice cutting directions, which lays an experimental foundation to build a closed-loop fabrication strategy using real-time force as a sensor feedback to control the cutting direction with lattice precision. Combined with existing parallel multi-tip technology, the technique developed in this work will make it possible to fabricate large-scale graphene-based nanodevices at low cost with high efficiency..
