Focus Metals issues an Update on Metallurgical Testing from the Lac Knife Graphite Property
Focus Metals Inc. (TSX VENTURE: FMS) presented the results from the metallurgical testing performed by SGS Metallurgical Services for its Lac Knife graphite property in Quebec. The results have demonstrated the presence of a high percentage (46.1%) of large flake (+48 mesh to +100 mesh, whereby the highest grade, +48 mesh accounted for 16.6%) deposits and smaller, 39% presence of medium flake (+150 mesh to +200 mesh) deposits; the global recovery test rate was 85.9%. These are very promising results as they validate Focus Metals’ concentration of the very type of graphite that will see increasing demand for the manufacturing of graphene (the large flake variety) and Li-ion battery anodes. The Lac-knife results give Focus Metals a very strong position in the increasingly competitive graphite market. CEO, Gary Economo, noted that the Company will also be able to increase the recovery rate by using new purification and processing technology. Focus Metals’ shareholders will be especially pleased by the high percentage of the jumbo flake variety emerging from the tests as this is the rarest type of graphite and the one that can command the highest prices in the market given its strong demand in the high technology sector and the manufacturing of graphene. Indeed, the Lac Knife graphite property is the key to Focus Metals’ graphene ambitions.
The property represents the largest known source of highest grade, 16% graphite. The property is located near Fermont, Quebec, and it can boast reliable grid power generation and reliable infrastructure, including transportation links that make the property commercially viable. Focus Metals bought Lac Knife from IAMGOLD in 2010 and while the property attracted high tech suitors in the late 1990’s, the availability of cheap and abundant graphite from China in the past decade muffled demand. The emergence of a slew of high tech applications and Chinese market restrictions on graphite has renewed interest in Lac Knife.
Focus Metals’ appeal is its concentration on the high demand varieties of graphite for the technology sector, including the next generation of li-ion batteries, which require higher contents of specific graphite types, such as the fine mesh variety that can be found at Lac Knife. In addition, through its 40% stake in Grafoid Inc., a graphene research company, Focus Metals is on the leading edge of graphene development, including the quest for a commercially viable method to produce scale quantities of graphene, which is finding an ever larger range of applications.

Carbon Nanotube Breakthrough
PENANG, 10 April 2012 - A group of researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have successfully discovered a new method for producing carbon nanotubes, the most innovative material of the 21st century with a 1001 uses for the production of industrial and automotive end products.
As reported by Science Daily, there has been a major breakthrough in the continuous production method of producing carbon nanotubes. According to the team at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, the new method is not just capable fo dropping the price from $100 to $700 USD per gram to $15 to $35 per gram, but its environmentally friendly and doesn’t require a lot of space for production. At present their system is capable of producing up to 1000 grams per day.
While you can’t believe all the claims that are made in the media, this breakthrough if real and scalable, is going to be one of the major advances of this decade. With a cost advantage as claimed, money is going to pour into rapidly commercialising the sector. I have no reason to disbelieve the team at Malaysia’s USM.

Investing in Graphite - Prices Up 250% Already
By Nick Hodge
Thursday, April 12th, 2012
Now is the time to take advantage of the graphite bull.
Prices for the mineral have surged 250% in the past few years thanks to a number of factors.
Here's what you need to know...
Investing in Graphite
For starters, graphite is kind of in a “rare earth” type situation because 70% of supply is controlled by China.
Industrialization in that country — as well as in India and other emerging markets — has led to increased demand for graphite in its traditional use as an additive to steel.
The 30% of supply that comes from outside of China is typically used in full by the country where it's mined..
There's only a handful operating graphite mines in the entire world.
So take a look at what all those various market factors have done to graphite prices in the last five years..

SDK to Invest in Graphite Electrode Company in China
April 13, 2012 (Source: DigitalJournal) -- Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has signed an agreement with Sinosteel Corporation (Sinosteel), of China, to acquire 67% of shares in Sinosteel's wholly owned subsidiary Sinosteel Sichuan Carbon Co., Ltd. (Sichuan Carbon), an integrated manufacturer of graphite electrodes. Sichuan Carbon will become SDK's subsidiary subject to ratification by related government organizations. SDK will introduce its technology into Sichuan Carbon to improve product quality, and expand its graphite electrode operations in China and other Asian countries. SDK will consider the possibility of expanding Sichuan Carbon's capacity to meet a growing demand.
Sichuan Carbon is operating a 22,000 t/y graphite electrode plant, and selling the product in the Chinese market. When this facility is added to the existing facilities - the 60,000 t/y plant in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, and the 45,000 t/y plant of Showa Denko Carbon, Inc. (SDKC) located in South Carolina, U.S.A., the Showa Denko Group's total production capacity will reach 127,000 t/y.
Furthermore, a capacity expansion project is under way at SDKC. After completion of the project, the Group's total capacity involving one each plant in Japan, the U.S.A. and China, will increase to 157,000 t/y in 2014. We have so far provided high-grade graphite electrodes produced at Omachi and SDKC to markets in Japan, the U.S.A. and the EU. After Sichuan Carbon becomes our subsidiary, we will vigorously develop and market "volume-zone" products for emerging markets mainly in China and other Asian countries. Thus, we will establish ourselves as a leading supplier of graphite electrodes covering both advanced and growing markets.
Graphite electrodes are used for electric steelmaking, which melts iron scrap for recycling. Demand for graphite electrodes is expected to increase steadily, as electric steelmaking grows due to its environment-friendly features of iron resource recycling and low CO2 emissions. The growth of electric steelmaking will also be supported by the increase in supply of iron scrap in China - the world's largest steel producer - and other emerging economies, following the proliferation of cars and the progress in urban development.
Under the new medium-term consolidated business plan PEGASUS, the Showa Denko Group is focusing on the two business domains of "Energy/Environment" and "Electronics," aiming to contribute toward creating a society where affluence and sustainability are harmonized. Together with the hard disk media business, the graphite electrode business is positioned as our main business. We are strengthening the graphite electrode business as it contributes to the sustainability of the global environment through the recycling of resources and the mitigation of global warming. We will fully utilize our advanced technologies to further improve product quality and develop new markets, thereby expanding the business and creating added value.

Amorphous graphite is a very fine material that does not compete much with flake but this is further evidence of the consolidation and modernization of the Chinese mining industries to improve resource management practices and labor and environmental standards. This usually has the effect of eliminating marginal producers, lowering supply and increasing prices. It also demonstrates that control of resources, value added processing and restrictions on exports do not just apply to REEs. This increases the probability the Chinese government will do something with flake as well which is the high growth, high value end of the market and the material used for Li ion batteries.
This is actually good news for our competitors because they will produce a lot of -150 mesh micro flake which competes more directly with amorphous. One of the concerns is that as new mines come on stream this stuff will go into oversupply and be difficult to sell as it is not the high growth market. This will alleviate some of the concerns. Our production is all larger flake.

Nice article about SGH ("Best of Breed"): http://www.marketwatch.com/story/...ite-resource-potential-2012-03-30

Was denkt ihr?
