Kodak Keeps Consumers Connected with Enhanced KODAK Picture Kiosk Technology

Date : 10/12/2011

Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) is announcing enhancements to its KODAK Picture Kiosk software that allows consumers to use images from their own, as well as from their friends' shared photo albums on social networks and imaging sites such as FACEBOOK, GOOGLE PICASA and KODAK Gallery to create personalized premium photo products right at the KODAK Picture Kiosk. In addition to expanding its social connectivity suite, Kodak is also introducing new KODAK Photo Book and KODAK Personal Greeting designs, the ability to conveniently and safely archive and store their growing image libraries and 38 new Picture Movie DVD song selections.

With more than 140 billion photos stored on FACEBOOK, and nearly 200 million more being uploaded every day(i), social networks have become a primary channel for consumers to view and share images. The enhancements to the KODAK Picture Kiosk software bring a whole new dimension to social image sharing. Consumers can access images from their own photo albums, and from friends' shared albums, to enrich their stories through creative print projects such as KODAK Photo Books, KODAK Personal Greetings, calendars, photo cards and prints.

Kodak initially introduced social network connectivity at the kiosk in 2010. Since that time, consumers have embraced this exciting new connected solution and retailers around the world are rapidly connecting their KODAK Picture Kiosks to this new medium. By the end of the year, more than 30,000 KODAK Picture Kiosks around the world will have this capability, making it even easier for consumers to make lasting prints and photo products that tell stories using their special memories.

"Providing easy access to the broad base of images stored on social networks through the KODAK Picture Kiosk allows consumers to do more than just share images; it lets them create something memorable and permanent in print," said Nicki Zongrone, general manager, Retail Systems Solutions, Eastman Kodak Company. "Social connectivity at the photo kiosk is Kodak innovation that meets consumers' evolving imaging needs while also delivering new experiences that inspire them to share their stories in new ways."

Improved Photo Book Creation Tools

Creating a photo book is even simpler with the new KODAK Picture Kiosk software suite. For consumers who want to make a beautiful photo book quickly, KODAK Picture Kiosks now feature KODAK SmartFit Technology, which perceptively organizes and places photos in a photo book template then let's the consumer decide to print immediately or personalize the layout further. Consumers seeking a more custom photo book can take advantage of the fun new designs and backgrounds, as well as customizable captions. An improved photo book project preview shows pages as they will appear in the actual KODAK Photo Book, allowing consumers to see the end product before they print.

Additionally, Kodak now offers more KODAK Express Photo Book formats: Standard Single-Sided format, which features rich KODAK XTRALIFE Paper, a waterproof and stain-resistant laminated paper designed to last that provides Kodak-quality photographic detail; Standard Duplex format, which allows consumers to create beautiful, double-sided Photo Books; and Premium Duplex format, which delivers the best of both: vibrant, borderless pages of KODAK XTRALIFE Photo Book Paper along with double-sided printing.

New KODAK Personal Greetings designs and Picture Movie DVD songs

Consumers also have access to hundreds of new KODAK Personal Greeting Card designs including new designers and 38 new KODAK Picture Movie DVD songs to choose from for added creativity.

Easy Archiving

The new KODAK Archive DVD offers an easy and convenient way to safely store images and digital videos from digital cameras, USB drives and memory cards, as well as from social sharing sites such as FACEBOOK, on a 4-gigbit DVD. Created easily at the KODAK Picture Kiosk, the KODAK Archive DVD provides a secure, highly compatible format that holds the equivalent of four KODAK Picture CDs and is usable in computers, DVD players and at the KODAK Picture Kiosk.

The new solutions are available today at many retail locations featuring the KODAK Picture Kiosk and KODAK Adaptive Picture Exchange (APEX) systems. Consumers can locate the nearest locations featuring the new tools using the KODAK Picture Kiosk finder on kodak.com.

Kodak Installs 2,000th Newspaper CTP System at Publisher in France print

Eastman Kodak (NYSE:EK)

Inter Presse Offset (IPO), the French regional daily press purchase group, has installed Kodak’s 2,000th newspaper CTP system at La Dépêche du Midi in Toulouse.  IPO, based in Paris, is responsible for the buying activities for about one-third of all regional dailies in the country. It chose the KODAK GENERATION NEWS Systems to improve service for customers, including also Télégramme de Brest, Nouvelle République du Centre Ouest, Sud Ouest, La Montagne and La République du Centre.  Pierre Delair, IPO Purchasing Director, expects return on investment in well under two years, noting that the recently installed GENERATION NEWS Systems replaced 12 CTP systems for the group’s regional dailies.  “We chose the KODAK GENERATION NEWS System for its high level of productivity,” Delair said. “Also, switching from violet systems to thermal systems allowed us to reduce chemistry usage and waste treatment substantially. This was an important element in our decision.”  Also important in the decision to invest was Kodak’s expert advice and guidance in identifying how the investment could be helpful to IPO. “We have chosen Kodak for their ability to understand our requirements,” Delair noted. “They took the time to fully assess our situation and offer just the right solution for us.”  The systems are running Kodak’s next generation THERMALNEWS GOLD Digital Plates designed specifically for newspaper printers. They offer improved resolution, 36-micron stochastic screening capabilities, fast processing and long run lengths, and clean processing and long developer life. Also delivered are fast restarts on press and a significant overall reduction in plate production time.  “As the leading supplier of CTP devices for newspapers globally, we are delighted that our 2,000 installations to date have been in every region for both large and small newspapers,” said Rinus Hoebeke, Kodak’s Newspaper Segment Director for Europe, Africa and Middle East Region. “Customers are realizing the need to differentiate themselves through better quality print and generate new revenue streams through semi-commercial print. Thermal technology is the best choice for these new opportunities, and that is driving its growth in popularity.”  Thermal CTP devices initially weren’t as fast as violet CTP devices, which is critical for the fast-paced newspaper industry. With the GENERATION NEWS System, that is no longer the case, as Kodak provides one of the fastest newspaper CTP devices, with throughput of up to 300 plates per hour at 1,270 dpi.  Key features of both the KODAK GENERATION NEWS System and the KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS Platesetter are the award-winning KODAK SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology. Thermal SQUARESPOT Technology eliminates the process variation found in visible light and UV systems, enabling high resolution AM screening especially the easy implantation and usage of Hybrid and FM screening with KODAK STACCATO Screening. This enables newspaper printers to offer unique services such as high-quality color advertising and print with detail and vibrancy.

...(?)nachpacken (!!?) :-)))

Here is some REAL news, and I will give you a plausible analysis, unlike the total NONSENSE from the McCrack heads BN has published.   BTW, those 2 boneheads are supposed to be M&A reporters, but their last BS story concerning EK, was about 2nd lien bondholders being solicited to form a committee that has NO ability to anything, unless EK was in BK. The same manipulators that fed the original BK story to these boneheads, obviously also fed the bondholder story. It seems to me that some unethical attorneys(shocking!) have been spreading rumors for their hedge hog clients to the knuckleheads at BN.   Now, WHY do we suppose that after all these years, that Fujifilm decides to sue EK over a few camera patents?

FACTS:

1) TIMING: The first round bids for the EK digital image patents were due this week.

2) FujiFilm was EK's biggest competitor in the old days, and has always understood the power of the EK patent portfolio in total, since Fuji also entered similar other business lines outside of film over the years.

3) Fuji has appx. $2 Billion in cash, whereas Apple has $80 Billion, MSFT has $50 Billion, Google has $27 Billion, Samsung has $20 Billion, Intel has $20 Billion.

My best plausible explanation: Fuji learned from Lazard in the last few days, that a few of the first round bids were for more than they have in cash, and they quickly concluded that there was NO way they would be able to afford the digital patents, or other EK assets they covet.

So, they made good on their threat, even though it is probably futile and desperate, to gain leverage by suing EK over these patents, in the US, knowing that EK is all but existing the US camera/camcorder market anyways.

The bidders for the EK patents are NOT going to be affected by this suit, but Fujifilm probably thinks it could not hurt, and it might be a cheap way of signaling that they have a few digital image patents also, since all the major players are watching or directly involved in bidding for the EK digital image patents.

Why else does Fujifilm sue EK now? If EK is going to file BK, as BN would have us think, then the suit would essentially be wiped out in court.    Most likely: It signals that Fujifilm sees EK exiting the US camera/camcorder market because they are selling their digital image patents, and they are hoping to draw some attention to themselves and their digital image patents, and maybe extract some sort of deal with the eventual winning buyers. Also, they may be trying to extort a small settlement from Kodak, since EK is probably exiting the US camera business, and might pay a small amount for Fuji to go away, so they can cleanly sell the remaining division assets.

BOTTOM LINE: It signals to me that a deal is very close at hand, and Fuji is not happy about how it appears to be working out.

ITC DECISION MAY STILL COME OCT 31
The Commission extended the target date to Oct 31, 2011, to provide the ALJ with sufficient time to extend the target date for himself based on further remand proceedings.

AFTER THE ALJ RETIREMENT, BULLOCK WAS TEMPORARILY ASSIGNED THE CASE. HOWEVER, as noted by the ITC, in Kodak's Case (Inv. No. 337-TA-703) all dates have NOT been suspended.
Even under temporary re-assignment, Bullock can issue a ruling from the Commission remand. This may in fact be the case as so far there is not word of the presumed postponement or of hiring any new ALJ judge. It is unlikely Bullock will want cases to linger on the docket, and clearly only suspended dates for No. 337-TA-745 (NOT Kodak's)

Additionally, see the notes below on the validity question and why this will go in Kodak's favor

FROM THE ITC:

For all but one of the notices, ALJ Bullock indicated that he will be temporarily reassigned as the presiding ALJ “until the arrival of a new administrative law judge.” Regarding Inv. No. 337-TA-745, ALJ Bullock suspended all dates in the investigation and indicated that “dates will be rescheduled once the Investigation has been permanently reassigned to an administrative law judge.”

ALJ Bullock issued notices on August 4 in the following investigations:

Inv. No. 337-TA-565
Inv. No. 337-TA-703
Inv. No. 337-TA-738
Inv. No. 337-TA-745
Inv. No. 337-TA-754
Inv. No. 337-TA-768
Inv. No. 337-TA-774
Inv. No. 337-TA-779

The Commission specifically requested that the ALJ on remand address the following:

The effect, if any, of ex parte reexaminations of the ‘218 patent, which closed shortly before the issuance of the final ID, and therefore were not fully considered;
*** NOTE THAT THE EX PARTE REEXAMINATION SUPPORTED KODAK ***

The ALJ’s decision and authority to rely upon combinations of prior art not expressly presented by the respondents; and
*** THE COMMISSION WAS DISTURBED BY THE ALJ'S USE OF HIS OWN PRIOR ART *** ; i.e. that would have been uncovered in the Ex Parte Re examination

Kodak’s secondary considerations, in particular, their obtaining large settlements in proceedings where it asserted the ‘218 patent
*** SINCE KODAK WON THE NEW CLAIMS CONSTRUCTIONS ON THE TWO CLAIMS IN THE SAMSUNG CASE ***

Video Eyewear Could Capture a Bigger Piece of $335 Billion Consumer Electronics Market

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 10/18/11 -- The concept of video eyewear has been around awhile but product sales have had limited success mostly due to lack of content formatted for the specific devices. UND:

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)

When Len Knight, Operations Manager of Emerson Clarke Printing Corporation in Calgary, Alberta, saw longer run digital printing jobs going to his competitors, he knew it was time to choose a more robust and versatile digital press.   “We were losing a lot of the bigger digital jobs because our printer was just too small,” he said. He and his two business partners, Rich Berg and Dave Smith, had to pass on longer digital runs and jobs like three-panel newsletters, landscape-format saddle-stitched books, posters, and other materials that required a sheet size up to 26 inches long—jobs that could mean a significant increase in business. Emerson Clarke utilizes a full range of offset presses to deliver high-quality work, including a five-color 29-inch press with a coater.   Along with the larger format, however, the three owners knew they needed the highest print quality they could get to match their customers’ high expectations and compete with other print shops in Calgary that already offered larger format digital printing. Their choice: The KODAK NEXPRESS SX3300 Digital Production Color Press, equipped with Kodak’s unique Print Genius image processing technology.   Emerson Clarke became the first printing company in Canada to install this superior quality press. “The first and biggest reason we chose the NEXPRESS Press over a competitor’s product is the quality,” said Knight. “The quality that it prints on various substrates far surpasses what the competition can do.”   Emerson Clarke selected the NEXPRESS SX3300 Press, which can handle a maximum sheet size of 14 x 20.47 inches with its standard feeder, or 14 x 26 inches with the optional long sheet feeder. The company also opted for the KODAK (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solution, making it possible to offer in-line dimensional printing, gloss and spot color, in-line watermarking, or coating in a single pass.   “I had a client who wanted to do a short-run book with a varnish effect on it, and she didn’t have the budget to do offset,” said Berg. “She’d always wanted to do this one job, and now we’ve given her the opportunity to get exactly what she wants. She was blown away with the quality.”   The Fifth Imaging Unit enables watermarking, protection coating, glossing, MICR printing, gamut expansion, red fluorescing ink for security and workflow applications, and in-line dimensional printing, which is unique in the industry. In addition, high-quality glossing through KODAK PERFECT TOUCH Gloss technology is possible using KODAK (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) NEXPRESS Clear Dry Ink in conjunction with the near-line KODAK NEXPRESS Glossing Unit.   It’s been just over a month since Emerson Clark installed its NEXPRESS Press and customer response is already very positive, said Knight. “The press was just installed in August, but the response to the fact that we can offer a 175-line screen, the bigger sheet size, and the textured papers has been enormous,” he said. “The competitor’s device can’t print on a classic linen or classic laid with the quality that we can on the NEXPRESS Press. When I go into the NEXPRESS Press room and see carts of stock ready to go into the machine, that’s very positive. There’s no doubt that we’ve already seen an increase in the digital side because of it, because those runs didn’t fit on our old device.”   Higher print quality and the ability to handle larger jobs were reason enough for Emerson Clarke to go with the NEXPRESS Platform, but Kodak (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) offered another benefit as well: KODAK (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) MARKETMOVER Business Development Services, which provides innovative tools, services and support for graphic communications professionals. This includes consulting services, seminars, on-site training, online resources and marketing tools to promote the expanded applications now being produced on the NEXPRESS Press.   “This was one of the added features that made us say, ‘Kodak is going to help us market this and get the clicks going on this device,’” said Knight. “No one else offered this sort of thing. We’ve got an exceptionally good sales team here, and this has really brought tremendous excitement into the company.”   About Kodak (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%)   As the world's foremost imaging innovator, Kodak (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) helps consumers, businesses, and creative professionals unleash the power of pictures and printing to enrich their lives.   To learn more, visit www.kodak.com and follow our blogs and more at www.kodak.com/go/followus.   More than 75 million people worldwide manage, share and create photo gifts online at KODAK Gallery -- join today at www.kodakgallery.com.   Choose from the widest selection of Kodak (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) digital cameras, all-in-one inkjet printers, pocket video cameras and more at http://store.kodak.com.   (Kodak (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) , Marketmover and NexPress are trademarks of Eastman Kodak Company (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%) .)     Source: Eastman Kodak Company (EK:$1.3000,$0.0600,4.84%)
