Plexus Holdings doubles full-year underlying earnings
MARK WILLIAMSON October 16 2008
Plexus Holdings, the oil and gas well technology specialist, said it had more than doubled underlying earnings in the latest year and underlined its international growth ambitions with news of the launch of a Malaysian sales venture.
Aberdeen-based Plexus, which has developed systems for sealing sections of tubing used in oil and gas wells, increased profit before tax by 145% to £1.9m in the year to June compared with £800,000 in the preceding year, before a £800,000 gain on a disposal.
The growth in profits was driven by increasing sales and growth in margins as the company appeared to benefit from increasing awareness of the POS-GRIP systems which it has developed. These are used to provide an effective seal between sections of tubing.
advertisementThe directors claim Plexus's technology can boost the efficiency and cut the cost of wells. They believe the advantages are especially obvious where operators are working in areas of high pressure and high temperature.
Activity is expected to continue increasing in these areas as operators try to meet demand for oil and gas, which Plexus expects to stay strong even if the global economy slows.
In the year to June, Plexus increased turnover by 29%, to £13.3m, helped by contract wins with the likes of Shell.
The company won a contract with the Dubai Petroleum Establishment to supply systems for use in the Arabian Gulf, which was its first in the key Middle Eastern region.
Encouraged by such success, Plexus has taken a 49% stake in a new venture in Malaysia, Plexus Ocean Systems (Malaysia) giving the company its first base of operationS outside of Aberdeen.
Chairman Robert Adair said the new venture was part of a strategy to diversify into new markets outside the North Sea.
It is also working on developing the POS-GRIP technology for use in a wider range of applications.
Shares in Plexus Holdings fell 3.4%, or 1.5p, to 43p, on the Alternative Invest- ment Market yesterday, when oil and gas stocks were hit by concerns about the outlook for the global economy.
Article Date: Oct 15 2008
Oil and gas engineering specialist Plexus Holdings has raised annual profits 145 per cent to £1.9 million pre-tax.
The Aberdeen-based company increased turnover 29 per cent to £13.3 million in the year to June, though its pre-tax profits growth rate shrinks to 21 per cent if investment disposal profits of £800,000 are included in the 2006-07 figure. AIM-quoted Plexus, which is extending the use of its proprietary POS-GRIP high-temperature and high-pressure system beyond exploration wellheads into the sub-sea market and elsewhere, won several sizeable contacts, including a £750,000 order from Shell (Egypt) and a £500,000 deal with Sweden’s Lundin Petroleum.
Chairman Robert Adair says Plexus, which has also won contracts with Conoco Philips and Dubai Petroleum, has diversified away from its ‘traditional North Sea heartland’ in a drive that has included establishing a subsidiary in Malaysia. He declares that the company faces the future ‘with confidence’, while conceding that the long lead times in this sector can cause ‘some volatility in anticipated revenues’.
Plexus shares, which hit 104p in 2006, now trade at 43p, down 1.5p this morning on concern about overall oil exploration activity. Over the long term, they could fare better than some others in the sector.
LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Plexus Holdings Plc. said its pretax profit for the first half rose and added it looks forward to the future with confidence.
The oil and gas engineering services company also said it is in a strong position to become a significant participant in the oil services sector.
For the six months ended June 30, the company posted a pretax profit of 1.9 million pounds compared with 1.57 million last year.
Last year's pretax profit figure included a 0.8 million pounds gain on an investment disposal, the company said.
Its revenues for the period rose to 13.28 million pounds from 10.27 million last year. tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomsonreuters.com ind/ind/ms1

Gegenstand des Unternehmens:
The initial application of POS-GRIP technology in the oil and gas industry was through the introduction of an adjustable rental wellhead system for jack-up exploration drilling.
The benefits demonstrated by the POS-GRIP jack-up drilling system, used in conventional field applications, led to the development of proprietary, specialised high pressure and high temperature (HP/HT) HG wellhead systems.
These systems have now become key products for Plexus as oil and gas exploration and production shifts to more extreme operational environments in response to increasing global demand for oil and gas products, necessitating the access to more difficult reserves.
The Plexus Group is currently in the process of developing POS-GRIP for use in more demanding applications and plans to develop the technology for environments of up to 30,000 psi and 450 deg F.
