status of the launch of the Age of Conan game.
Status of the launch
The Age of Conan game now has over 400.000 active
players (players who have registered their
purchased game key in the Company`s registration
and billing system). The Company underlines that
there is uncertainty regarding the future
development of this number. Amongst many factors,
it will depend on the continued early sales
success, on reviews from major gaming press in the
most important markets as well as the long term
appeal of the game play that determines the
longevity of the average subscription.
Funcom will not report subscriber numbers on a
regular basis, for marketing reasons, but will
provide additional financial guidance before the
Second Quarter 2008 reporting.

The retail box of Age of Conan is now reported as sold out or close to sold out in many shops and areas in several markets. Eidos, the retail-publishing partner for Age of Conan, is working to resupply the retail chains and will be shipping more product to retail in the coming weeks.
The Company may report if special milestones are reached as part of further building PR and marketing momentum for the Age of Conan game. Funcom will however, not report subscriber numbers on a regular basis, and will provide additional financial guidance before the Second Quarter 2008 reporting.

Funcom would like to provide an outlook for its second quarter 2008 revenue and results
Status of the launch
Funcom is pleased with the very successful launch of the ‘Age of Conan’ game, making it one of the largest western world PC launches in this decade. So far the product has sold through over 700.000 copies (i.e. customers that have bought a game client and entered their game client key and payment details into Funcom’s billing database).
Key success factors going forward will be Funcom’s ability to maximize the average longevity of subscription as well as the continued rate of customer acquisition. To maximize the average longevity of subscription Funcom will continue to expand and improve the product. To maximize the rate of customer acquisition Funcom will among other initiatives enter new markets with localized versions and optimize the Company’s sales and marketing initiatives. The Company is so far satisfied with the initial figures on customer retention and churn levels.
It is expected that the sales curves for the ‘Age of Conan’ game over time will be similar to the sales curves over time of other MMOs. So far the sales seem to follow the customary sales development.
Outlook for Q2 2008
The revenue in the second quarter of 2008 (Q208) is estimated to be between USD 11 million and USD 12 million and the EBIT in this period is estimated to in the range of from USD -5.5 million to USD -6,5 million.
Some key parameters in this estimate are:
•
Box revenue estimation:
o
The number of activated game keys in the ‘Age of Conan’ game is used as an estimate for retail sales in Q208. Funcom will receive reports from its co-publisher SCI Eidos after the end of each fiscal quarter.
o
The Company expects to receive approximately 20% of the box revenues sold through the retail channel and somewhat less in some export markets like countries in Eastern Europe.
•
Subscription revenue estimation:
o
Estimations regarding subscription revenues are based on early service renewal data, and have therefore a degree of uncertainty related to them.
o
Funcom follows a percentage of completion (time apportioned) basis of revenue recognition for service related revenues (subscription revenues). Subscription revenue is therefore recognized over the subscription period. The first subscription payments for the ‘Age of Conan’ game started on June 19. Therefore, relatively low subscription revenues have been booked in the second quarter.
•
Cost Estimation:
o
Funcom bases its cost estimation on closed accounts for the months April and May as well as estimates for the month of June.
o
The Company has had extraordinary cost levels in the areas of marketing, hosting, hardware purchases, personnel costs and operations related to the launch of the ‘Age of Conan’ game.
o
From the launch in May the company has started expensing a significant part of the costs related to the ‘Age of Conan’ project.
o
From the launch in May the company has started to amortize the intangible asset related to the ‘Age of Conan’ game.
The Company will present its Q208 financials on August 15th 2008.

Fazit: Funcom setzt auf ein Nischenpublikum - und punktet. Wer sich auf The Secret World einstellen kann, wird es lieben. Alle anderen lassen es einfach bleiben.

Background
Funcom reported in a stock notice the 6th of July that the company intended to update the market on The Secret World today. This update is based on current sales, press and gamer feedback and early indicators of subscription levels following the free 30 days game-time included in the game client.
Development since launch
Following the launch of The Secret World on the 3rd of July 2012, Funcom's share price has decreased significantly. The company attributes this mostly to the aggregate review score, the "Metascore", for the game at MetaCritic (www.metacritic.com) together with other public sources for tracking the performance of games.
While there are very positive reviews, there are as well mixed or average reviews from various press outlets, giving an aggregated score for The Secret World of 72 out of 100, which is to be considered low, and not in line with the positive feedback received during the beta phases from both press and players. Funcom is of course disappointed with achieving such a Metascore. A game like The Secret World, which is not based on a well-known brand, is normally dependent on positive press reviews to achieve successful initial sales, in addition - but not limited - to other factors like word of mouth.
Scenarios for The Secret World for the first 12 months following launch
Funcom has on several occasions presented two financial scenarios for the first 12 months following launch of the game; please refer to page 17 in the 1Q 2012 presentation *). Funcom does not consider it likely that either of them will be met.
To improve sales going forward, Funcom is currently enhancing distribution by launching the game on the Steam platform as well as focusing on key areas for improvement of the game and on-going activities on content updates, sales initiatives and communication. The effect of all these initiatives together with other factors impacting sales are difficult to predict, but based on the available early data, one scenario is that sales for the first 12 months following launch will be less than half of what was presented in the "Conan-like" scenario. It should be noted that the sales amount in the "Conan-like" scenario is significantly higher than for the game "Age of Conan", due to the assumption of better retention implemented in the scenario. Also it should be noted that the company has significantly lower operational cost for The Secret World than what was the case for Age of Conan. As less initial sales than expected is considered an indicator of impairment, the company is currently evaluating the need for recognizing an impairment loss for the game in the profit and loss statement.
Retention
Funcom is pleased to see that gamer satisfaction is high, with user score of 8.4 out of 10 and higher on www.metacritic.com and other sites like mmorpg.com. This is in line with the beta surveys and beta players' feedback that the company received prior to launch. The company considers this a positive indicator of high customer satisfaction, and a solid foundation to build on the positive and engaged community Funcom has established with The Secret World.
First indication of churn is more positive than for Age of Conan, and the in-game store is performing as expected. The add-on packs are performing better than expected. Also higher than expected sales are going directly through the online download stores like EA's Origin and Funcom's own storefront, generating more profitable sales for the company.
A possible scenario going forward is that the game will sell less than both of the two above mentioned scenarios the first 12 months following launch, but with high customer satisfaction, it will generate a more stable subscriber base than the game Age of Conan. Over time, this will enable Funcom to retain more customers and generate higher revenue.
Immediate cost-adjustment initiatives
Funcom is currently implementing several cost-adjustment initiatives due to the expected lower initial revenues from The Secret World to secure future positive cash flows.
Next update
The next update of The Secret World will be given in the 2Q 2012 report to be published 28th August.
