Dollar mit den Experten von Forbes & Manhattan durchgeführt, die unter anderem den Eisenerzproduzenten Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines bis zur 4,9 Mrd. Dollar schweren Übernahme durch Cliffs Natural Resources begleiteten. Und jetzt kann man bekannt geben, dass Francois Laurin - ehemals CFO bei eben dieser Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines - , den CEO-Posten bei Cap-Ex einnehmen wird!

Stahlpreis Entwicklung bei €425, Prognose 2012: Steigt über €476
Der Stahlpreis kostet aktuell 425 Euro bzw. 553 Dollar pro Tonne an der Londoner Metallbörse (LME). Damit wird Walzstahl als LME-Referenzsorte wieder teurer. Bei der Stahlpreisentwicklung scheint ein Boden bei 378 Euro und 510 Dollar im November 2011 erreicht worden zu sein. Entgegen den Prognosen von Rohstoffanalysten, konnte weltweite Stahlproduktion steigen.
So erhöhte sich die Produktion des Industriemetalls um 1,1 Prozent im November 2011 gegenüber dem Vorjahresmonat, teilte der Weltstahlverband mit. Am größten waren die Zuwächse in den Vereinigten Staaten mit einem Anstieg von 6,42 auf 7,18 Millionen Tonnen (+11,8 Prozent). In Deutschland verringerte die Stahlkocher den Output von 3,84 auf 3,46 Millionen Tonnen (-9,9 Prozent).
In der wieder steigenden Stahlpreisentwicklung spiegeln sich auch die Produktionszuwächse von Brasilien (+3,7 Prozent) und Südkorea (+12,4 Prozent) wieder. In China, dem Land mit der am Abstand größte Produktion, lag die Erzeugermenge im November 2011 um -0,2 Prozent niedriger als im November 2010. Chinesische Stahlkocher drosselten den Ausstoß von 49,99 auf 49,88 Millionen Tonnen.
Stahlpreis Prognose 2012
Aufgrund der verbesserten Konjunkturaussichten für die USA und einem robusten Wirtschaftswachstum im Reich der Mitte hat der Stahlpreis deutliches Aufwärtspotential. Die wirtschaftlichen Probleme im Euroraum in Verbindung mit der Schuldenkrise fallen für die globale Stahlkonjunktur auch nicht so sehr ins Gewicht, weil die EU auf nicht einmal ein Drittel der Stahlproduktion Chinas kommt.
Volkswirte erwarten für die Vereinigten Staaten ein Wirtschaftswachstum 2012 in Höhe von zwei Prozent. China dürfte abermalig mit einer Erhöhung des Bruttoinlandsproduktes (BIP) von mehr als acht Prozent auftrumpfen. Wenn sich diese Prognosen zum Wirtschaftswachstum 2012 bewahrheiten sollten, dann hätte der Stahlpreis schon in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2012 das Potential die Rekordhochs vom August 2011 bei 476 Euro bzw. 690 Dollar je Tonne zu überspringen.

Key Data
Kuujjuaq Airport (formerly Fort Chimo airport, the name was changed in 1980) is a 'remote airport' (designated as remote by the Canadian National Airports Policy) in the north of Quebec in Canada near Ungava Bay. However, it has an important function for the outlying communities situated there as it is their main connection to the outside world, an important transport link all year round.
The airport is owned by Transport Canada and has been operated by the Kativik Regional Government since September 1996.
The airport has a total land area of 145ha and the facility has an air terminal building of 380m² first built in 1972, a flight service station operated by Nav Canada, an aircraft servicing hangar, a refuelling service and a cargo transportation service.
The airport was originally built by the US (with Canada's permission) in 1942 as part of the USAF Crimson route, which was a short air ferry route to northern Europe from California.
The airport came under Canadian control again in 1955 and has been ever since.

The Labrador Trough (alternatively known as Labrador Fold Belt or Labrador geosyncline) is a belt of Proterozoic (i.e. post-2300 my) sedimentary rocks and associated igneous intrusions that extends for almost 1,500 kilometres from south to north and is up to 100 kilometres wide. At its western margin, the Labrador Trough is structurally simple, with sediments resting on Archean basement and dipping gently to the east. Towards the centre of the trough the structure becomes more complex with at least two generations of folding and a series of east-dipping thrust faults.
Iron ore was discovered in the Labrador Trough by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1894, although there is little doubt that the indigenous Cree and Innu populations, who valued hematite as a pigment, were well aware of the deposits long before that. However, because of the relative remoteness of the area, there was no serious attempt to develop the iron deposits until after the second world war. Exploration outlined a large body of DSO at Knob Lake, which led to the development of the town of Schefferville and the construction of the 565-kilometre QNS&L rail line to the deep-water port of Sept-Iles on the St. Lawrence north shore in Québec. Production by Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) commenced in 1954 and continued until 1982, and 350 million tons were mined and shipped. This was the first phase of iron mining in the Labrador Trough.
The second phase of iron mining in the Labrador Trough started in the early 1960s and soon came to outstrip IOC's DSO production from Schefferville. The southern end of the Labrador Trough extends into the Grenville Province where a much higher grade of metamorphism has recrystallized the taconite into an ore with a coarser grain size, hence easier and cheaper beneficiation. These iron ores are referred to as "metataconites". Similar rocks in Brazil are referred to as "itabirite". Production of metataconite began at IOC's Carol Lake mine in 1962, and at Wabush Mines (now Cliffs Natural Resources) Wabush/Scully mine in 1965. In adjacent parts of Québec, Quebec Cartier Mining (now ArcelorMittal) commenced mining at Lac Jeanine in 1963, then moved north to much larger deposits, starting to produce at Fire Lake in 1973 and Mont Wright in 1975. Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines commenced production at Bloom Lake in 2010. Complex folding, which is typical of the Grenville province, has often caused thickening of iron formations, and this has made delineation of large orebodies much easier.
The third phase of iron mining in the Labrador Trough is just commencing.
Driven by higher prices for iron, and the fact that world reserves of DSO are being rapidly depleted, interest is focusing on developing plain taconite deposits.

2012: The Recognition of The Age of Critical Technology Materials
The following essay was written over New Year’s weekend, 2011-12. My theme is that the rare earths supply frenzy has exposed an irreversible shift in the demand/supply picture for all technology materials, not just the metals, but also the energy minerals, and the minerals necessary for agriculture. The only mining ventures today that have the potential to be profitable on a stand-alone basis are those that can produce at the lowest cost in the global marketplace and the breakeven point of which is low enough to so they can maintain production at very low levels thus holding on to their customers.
America’s technology materials mining industry can prosper now only by vertically integrating to supply the domestic market first. Surplus production can be exported from several points of a total supply chain thus reinforcing capacity flexibility and dropping the breakeven point for the whole supply chain. This is smart globalization. Just as an aircraft flight attendant tells you to connect your oxygen first before trying to help anyone else I am telling you to build total supply chains for technology materials domestically to ensure that you can help yourself before you try to help others.
