Top handset maker Nokia reported a drop in second-quarter sales and core earnings on Thursday due to fierce competition and a weak handset portfolio and said profitability would stay under pressure for the rest of 2004.

The Finnish company said it expected third-quarter earnings of between 0.08 and 0.10 euros per share, down from 0.17 euro a year ago and well below an average forecast of 0.14 euro in a Reuters poll of 18 analysts. Sales would also fall.

Nokia (NOK1V.HE) has endured a barrage of criticism and a slide in its share price since it stunned investors three months ago by admitting it could not exploit a surge in demand due to a patchy line-up of cell phones.

It has responded by cutting prices, saying profit margins would remain under pressure until its product portfolio is stronger. Rival Sony Ericsson (Stockholm:ERICb.ST - News; Tokyo:6758.T - News) earlier reported a higher-than-expected profit due to the robust demand.

Nokia said its April-June earnings per share (EPS) slumped to 0.15 euro from an underlying 0.19 euro a year ago. Sales fell five percent to 6.6 billion euros versus an average analyst forecast of 6.56 billion.
