NEW YORK (AFX) - U.S. stocks tumbled from their best levels Tuesday
afternoon with the Nasdaq going negative as a rally inspired by bullish economic
data on the back of solid earnings numbers fizzled.
"I think it's a little pause here," said Art Hogan, chief market analyst at
Jefferies & Co.
"Today is one of the first days we're looking at the glass being half full. All
things remain the same, the market is going to close in positive territory with
good news as a backdrop and that's the first time that's happenend in the last
couple of weeks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was last up just 33 points, or 0.3 percent,
at 10,478 after rising as high as 10,537 intra-day.
The Nasdaq Composite Index , meanwhile was down 5 points, or 0.2 percent, to
2,031, well below its 2.053 session high. The S&P 500 was up 3 points, or 0.3
percent, to 1,139.
Shortly after the opening bell, the Conference Board reported that its consumer
confidence index improved to 92.9 in April from 88.5 in March while the number
of Americans who said jobs were hard to get fell to its lowest level since
November 2002. Wall Street economists expected the index to remain steady at
about 88.7, according to a survey conducted by CBS MarketWatch.
News on existing home sales was also good with the National Association of
Realtors reporting that sales rose 5.7 percent in March to 6.48 million units,
well ahead of economists' forecasts for a 1 percent rise to 6.18 million units.
"On the fundamental side, it's a pretty positive backdrop here," said Joe Liro,
equity strategist at Stone & McCarthy. "We have a solid economy, a Fed that
still shows signs of being relatively patient ... and you've got just absolutely
great earnings numbers."
But Todd Leone, head of listed trading at SG Cowen, noted that the question of
when rate hikes will begin remains "in the back of people's minds." Listen to

Verizon Communications and DuPont, meanwhile, headed up the latest list of blue
chips to beat analysts' expectations, though both stocks were moving lower.
Adjusted for one-time items, Verizon recorded income of 58 cents a share,
beating the 57-cent average of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call. Revenue
rose 3.9 percent to $17.1 billion.
DuPont , meanwhile, said it earned 96 cents a share before special items in the
first quarter, a penny ahead of the 95 cent a share First Call average. Sales
rose 15 percent to $8.1 billion. The chemicals giant also announced plans for a
$1.4 billion debt financing.
All but about a handful of Dow stocks were on the rise led by a 3.2 percent gain
in Honeywell . Davenport & Co. upgraded the stock to "buy," saying the company
seems to have turned the corner after a number of disappointing quarters.
Other big blue chip winners included ExxonMobil , Altria , Merck , Wal-Mart
, and IBM .
DuPont and Verizon were among the worst performing stocks on the Dow, dropping 1
percent and 1.2 percent respectively. Hewlett-Packard slid 1.3 percent.
Altria Group added 1.3 percent to $56.33 after fellow cigarette maker R.J.
Reynolds said it earned $1.43 a share in the first quarter, well above the 97
cents expected by analysts, and raised its outlook for 2004. RJR shares rose 4.1
percent to $61.99.
IBM was better by 1.4 percent at $91.60. Big Blue boosted its quarterly dividend
to 18 cents a share from 16 cents and also announced a contract extension with
Morgan Stanley worth about $575 million.
In merger news, UnitedHealth Group agreed to acquire Oxford Health Plans for
about $5 billion in cash and stock. UNH shares edged up 0.2 percent while Oxford
shares were better by 1.8 percent.
Immucor surged 24 percent to $27.10 on news the Food & Drug Administration
approved its Galileo blood transfusion system. The stock was upgraded at Piper
Jaffray and Merriman Curhan Ford.
Oil services showed the biggest sector gain. The PHLX Oil Services Index
popped 3.7 percent as Transocean , Baker Hughes and BJ Services posted
earnings that surpassed analysts' forecasts. Baker Hughes climbed 5.6 percent
while Transocean lifted 5.9 percent and BJ Services added 5.2 percent.
The Amex Airlines Index lifted 0.9 percent. US Airways reported
narrower-than-expected first-quarter losses while AirTran Holdings posted a
stronger-than-forecast profit for the quarter. Shares of both companies
advanced.
Sector decliners included networkers, gold and hardware.
Advancers were leading decliners 1,951 to 1,275 on volume of about 1 billion
shares on the New York Stock Exchange and 1,620 to 1,510 on volume of 1.3
billion shares on the Nasdaq.
In the Treasury market, the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was up 3/32 at 96
18/32 to yield 4.43 percent versus 4.44 percent at Monday's close.
The dollar was down 0.2 percent vs. the euro at $1.1880 but up 0.9 percent
versus the yen at 109.60 yen.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, June gold was up $3 at $399.60 an ounce,
while June crude added 43 cents to $37.40 a barrel. See and
In remarks at an energy conference Tuesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan
Greenspan said higher energy prices appear to be in the future.
He made no comments on the current U.S. economy or on monetary policy.
Earnings watch
Tumbleweed Communications shares plunged 43 percent after the company reported
a first-quarter loss and forecast continued losses in the second quarter, due to
acquisition-related expenses and other costs.
Rockwell Collins , Lockheed Martin , retailer Jones Apparel and oil services
giant Baker Hughes all raised their earnings projections for the year.
Elsewhere, Global Crossing said it's reviewing its financial statements for
2002 and 2003 to address concerns about its accounting for accrued cost of
access liability. The company said it expects to restate results for that period
as a preliminary investigation suggests and understatement of the item by $50
million to $80 million in 2003. The company also said its outlook for 2004
should be disregarded, pending the outcome of the review. The stock plunged 23
percent to $13.98.
In consumer electronics, Sony said it expects net income to rise 13 percent in
the current business year ending March 2005, as sales of digital consumer
electronics offset expected declines in its games and music businesses. Sony
shares slipped 1.8 percent.

Die arabische TV-Anstalt El Arabija meldete unter Berufung auf Augenzeugen, insgesamt hätten sich mehr als 15 Explosionen ereignet. Möglicherweise habe es sich um Autobomben gehandelt, hieß es seitens der BBC weiter. Doch seien diese Berichte bislang nicht bestätigt. Die Polizei habe das betroffene Gelände, in dem sich mehrere Botschaften befänden, abgeriegelt. Damaskus/London/Kairo (dpa) - In der syrischen Hauptstadt Damaskus hat es am späten Nachmittag mehrere Explosionen und offenbar auch sporadische Feuergefechte gegeben. Das syrische Fernsehen machte eine «terroristische Gruppe» für die Explosionen verantwortlich.
Die Sicherheitskräfte hätten die Lage jedoch unter Kontrolle, hieß es weiter im syrischen Fernsehen. Über Schäden gab es zunächst keine verlässlichen Angaben.
Nach Angaben der britischen BBC und des arabischen Nachrichtensenders El Dschsira könnte es sich um Autobombenanschläge handeln. Einwohner von Damaskus berichteten telefonisch nach Beirut, in den Straßen seien Schüsse und der Widerhall explodierender Handgranaten zu hören gewesen.
Die britische BBC hatte mehrere Explosionen nahe der iranischen und kanadischen Botschaft sowie der Residenz des britischen Botschafters gemeldet. Die Polizei habe das betroffenen Gebiet abgesperrt, hieß es weiter. Neben den Botschaften befinden sich dort nach den Angaben Wohn- und Bürogebäude. Es gebe auch Spekulationen, Ziele der vermeintlichen Anschläge könne die weiter im Zentrum der Stadt gelegenen britische Botschaft gewesen sein, sagte eine BBC- Reporterin.
