F5 Networks Declared the Clear and Substantiated Leader in Extensive Independent 3rd Party Testing and Analysis

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 2004--F5 Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:FFIV):

--  Broadband-Testing Developed the Most Comprehensive,
Diversified and Challenging Test Methodology, Based on
Real-World Customer Evaluation Criteria, to Provide an
In-Depth Analysis of Product Adaptability and Intelligence

F5 Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:FFIV), the global leader of Application Traffic Management products, today announced that Broadband-Testing, an independent test lab specializing in the Layer 4-7 (L4-7) market, has deemed F5's BIG-IP version 9 product the leader in a comprehensive review of product adaptability and intelligence among products from Cisco, Nortel, Radware, NetScaler and Redline.

The Broadband test criteria sets the highest industry standards for an objective analysis because it is based upon real-world scenarios, real applications and real data. This represents a significant advancement for the market because it is the first comprehensive, challenging and in-depth test scenario to be based upon customer-driven requirements, challenges and needs. Unlike traditional tests, Broadband's test suite was designed to evaluate a product's: (1) intelligence, (2) ability to adapt to changing application needs, and (3) ease of management. The test analyzed a product's depth of visibility into the network and networked applications, as well as its limits to entirely or selectively act upon that information to direct, optimize and secure traffic. In addition, the test suite assessed the manageability of the devices from an administrative perspective, including system monitoring ability, user-interface maturity, and API (Application Programming Interface) and SDK (Software Development Kit) robustness.

All the products included in the Broadband test were examined and evaluated in vital categories, such as application optimization, networking functionality, user interface, device management, application support, security capabilities, and much more. The overall design goal for each test was that it must be fair, honest and repeatable. As part of this process, F5 is taking the unprecedented approach of making all test plans, results, and methodologies available to customers and prospective customers.

"In the real world, customers don't care how fast the data gets there if it doesn't end up where it's supposed to," said Steve Broadhead, Founder of Broadband-Testing. "But, from a test perspective, many vendors market their products' capabilities based around generic claims of applications supported and unrealistic, narrowly defined test scenarios, while ignoring the realities of how customers actually implement and manage these products on a day-to-day basis. It means that the customer cannot know what a product can do and just how difficult a product can be to live with until it's too late, and then have to start again from scratch, which is very costly."

"Within our industry there tends to be a lot of misleading vendor claims that not only reflect poorly on a vendor, but also gives the entire networking industry a black eye," said Erik Giesa, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at F5 Networks. "As the global market leader in application traffic management, F5 is establishing a fair baseline for all future L4-7 switching tests that empower customers to understand a product's true capabilities and not have to rely on vendor misinformation or hype. This test methodology is a huge step forward for our market because it's the first time an independent test lab has taken on the enormous task of defining and documenting a broad test plan based on real-world use case scenarios."

About Broadband-Testing

Broadband-Testing Laboratories is a vendor independent testing organization offering its facilities and expertise to both vendors and end users for private testing commissions. The laboratories are furnished with the latest in network and test equipment. Whatever LAN or WAN infrastructure is required to perform the tests, it can be simulated accurately. Facilities are available to test single products, or perform full competitive analyses, and the permanent network test-bed provides enough network traffic to stress-test any network device, together with the ability to guarantee consistent results test after test. Industry-standard benchmarks are used wherever possible, supplemented by "real life" benchmarks developed in-house and unique to Broadband-Testing. The focus of Broadband-Testing labs is in proving how devices function in today's live networks.
