MARK BENNETT: Blu-ray shows Wabash Valley economy will survive

TERRE HAUTE — The recession is going to end.
[..]
What about five or eight years from now?
The study by SNL Kagan, called "The State of Home Video," predicts that high-def DVD — Blu-ray Discs — will command 59.7 percent of the home video market by 2014. To give that some perspective, consider that standard DVDs — the kind that replaced the old VHS tapes — currently hold 97.1 percent of the market. By 2017, the Kagan report expects Blu-rays’ market share to grow to 73.8 percent.
[..]
"We see it really starting to ramp up about 2011, and then really begin growing significantly till 2017," Wade Holden, a Kagan analyst, said by telephone from Monterey, Calif. Holden spent much of the last half of 2008 studying the home video industry. He expects Blu-ray to be that market’s "driving force" through the decade ahead.
The recession has slowed Blu-ray’s rise, temporarily, the study surmised. "We think people are not really up to investing $300 or $400 or more" right now, Holden said. That will change, he added. Sales of Blu-ray players should rise from $255.4 million last year to $1.3 billion in 2010 and $6.9 billion in 2013.
Sony agrees with most of Kagan’s conclusions, except the recession’s current impact."The overall video market, not [Blue-ray Disc] specific, has been affected," said Jim Twiggs, Sony vice president of Blu-ray.
[..]
The upward trend already has begun. The Terre Haute plant produced 125 million Blu-ray Discs in 2008. That figure should grow to 170 million this year, with a capacity for more than 300 million, according to Shelley Klingerman, marketing manager at Terre Haute Sony DADC.

Production: Sony DADC in its Terre Haute facility produced 125 million Blu-ray Discs in 2008, and expects to increase that number to 170 million this year.
Projection: Currently, standard DVDs comprise 97.1 percent of the home video market. But by 2014, high definition discs — Blu-rays — are expected to reach 59.7 percent of the market, and 73.8 percent by 2017 (or $15.6 billion).

China set to launch CBHD blue laser disc
Posted on 28/07/08 15:16 by Seán Byrne
China is set to begin volume production of its new HD optical disc format CBHD (China Blue High-definition Disc) in the 4th quarter of this year with Shanghai United Optical Disc being the first manufacturer to set up a production line for the disc format, according to this DigiTimes Systems report.
[..]
One significant advantage with CBHD is that an existing DVD production line can be refitted to manufacture CBHD discs for just over 1/4 the cost of setting up a BD disc production line (US$800,000 vs. US$3 million). CBHD also requires significantly lower royalty fees than Blu-ray per licensed player of just 55 Yuan (US$8.10)) per player.

NVD Format to Compete With Blu-ray and CBHD in China
The Chinese proprietary HD NVD (Next-generation Versatile Disc) format has reportedly made its commercial appearance in China last month, in an effort to compete with Blu-ray and the government-backed CBHD formats.
[..]
But even the Blu-ray format, which is trying to enter the Chinese market, is already suffering from piracy. The so-called "BD-9" discs (not a formal name but pirates seem to like it a lot) are currently sold in China for US$5.00-7.00. They are actually DVD-R discs that hold Blu-ray movies that have been re-compressed using the H.264 format. The pirates are using the AvcRec recording systems. AvcRec was created by the BD group and allows users to record HD contents with using H.264 onto current DVD-R media. The specific discs are compatible with some Blu-ray players. Strangely, Sony's PS3 is also capable of playing back BD-9 discs and the PS3 is the best selling BD player in China at this moment.
As a result, more than 500 Blu-ray titles are currently available in China now. The situation is definitely not acceptable by the studios and thus, they are also reluctant to start Blu-ray business in China.
In addition, the Chinese government has not approved the Blu-ray disc format yet so they do not need to worry about BD piracy, at least for now.
[..]
CBHD
[..]
The China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD) format, which had been officially announced in 2007, is also trying to find a way to the Chinese HD market.
The format was backed by China High-definition DVD industry Association (CHDA), the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC) the DVD Forum. The physical format of CBHD includes Chinese-owned intellectual property and it is based on Toshiba's HD DVD format.
The worldwide financial crisis had an effect in the format's adoption, a DVD forum representative told CDRInfo.
But China Government has decided to subsidize many industries in China to survive the crisis. The government has funded some manufacturers engaged in the CBHD format in order to accelerate the CBHD project.
At CES last month, Chinese delegation had meetings with a couple of Hollywood studios and have come into an agreement to launch CBHD titles in China, according to industry sources in the DVD Forum.
The format is based on Blue laser and it is protected against piracy using the AACS content protection schemes, also used by the Blu-ray format. The CHBD backers believe that this would convince the Chinese government to finally support their format. And with Blu-ray disc manufacturing still in early stages in China, the government has the chance to fight piracy by controlling the Blu-ray disc manufacturing right from the start.
