Because of the poor economy and the geopolitical risk associated with Russian stocks, most Russian stocks listed on the NASDAQ have done poorly. Shares of leading Russian search engine Yandex (NASDAQ:YNDX) have not been spared. Yandex's stock has fallen 47% in a one year span and is currently trading around its 52 week low.

But despite the underperformance, Yandex is still a compelling growth investment for long term investors.

The bad news has arguably been priced in. Geopolitically, everything negative that can occur has pretty much occurred. Short of Russia breaking from the West completely, things can't get much worse. The same can be said for Russian equities. Everyone who wanted to sell has already sold their Russian holdings by now.

On a long timeline, many good things can occur to Russia's economy. Russia's economy could successfully diversify away from commodities and produce more value added goods. Russia could make peace with Ukraine and the Western sanctions could be dropped. Crude oil prices could rise as excess capacity leaves the marketplace and geopolitical strife spreads. If any of the above occurs, the Ruble will rise, and Yandex's EPS will rise with it.

Another reason to be optimistic about Yandex is that Google could leave Russia if the present geopolitical situation worsens. Russian President Vladimir Putin is famous for his distrust of internet companies; he once remarked that the internet was a CIA project. Given that Google is pretty much the front page of the internet, Putin may decide that Google is a threat and limit Google's Russian reach in the same way that China limited Google's Chinese reach in 2010. There are already signs that Putin is pushing against Google......

Fundamentally, Yandex is cheap. While Yandex's forward PE of 18.9 is slightly higher than the S&P 500's forward PE ratio of 17, Yandex's next 5 year EPS growth rate of 15.5% is significantly higher than the S&P 500's next 5 year growth rate of 6%. Yandex is the leader in Russia's search market and has successfully adjusted to the mobile age. Given Russia's 61% internet penetration, Yandex's EPS will grow faster than Russia's GDP will. Its shares are also poised to benefit if Google leaves Russia.

p.s. Ich kann mich auch irren...

http://www.investresearch.net/yandex-aktienanalyse/

http://www.investresearch.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Yandex.jpg

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/...pened-to-russia-2015-04-07?page=2 ....here is something nobody expected. In the first quarter of this year, Russia was doing a bit better than anyone could have forecast. We learned last week that the economy managed to grow by 0.4% in the latest quarter, compared to the zero growth or the outright recession that most economists had penciled in. The ruble is the best-performing currency of the last three months. Even the Moscow stock index has started to recover.

Putin is still in power, and still in possession of Crimea. Nor is there much sign of anything more than short-term damage. A 0.4% quarterly growth rate is not fantastic, but it is better than France, and roughly the same as Germany or Japan. Neither country is facing imminent collapse. True, the forecasts are for gross domestic product to fall for this year — the IMF suggest it will contract by more than 3% — but those may well turn out to wrong as well. What is certainly true is that the economy has not been devastated.

The interesting question, however, is whether it might actually be strengthened. That might sound odd. But the main problem for the Russian economy over the past decade was an over-reliance on oil revenues, and a state-led kleptocracy, which stifled the emergence of a productive domestic economy.
.....
Without oil, Russia will have to develop its own industries. And with sanctions slowing down imports, there will be space for entrepreneurs to move into. The state will become less powerful, because it will have lower oil revenues, and so will the oligarchs. Russia will have the opportunity to gradually replace crony capitalism with competitive capitalism. In the medium term, that can only be for the better.
...
Keep in mind as well that this is one of the cheapest markets in the world. The Moscow index trades on a price-to-earnings ratio of 6.7, less even than Greece. For an economy that is solvent, and growing at 0.4%, that is a bargain. Sanctions and a collapsing oil price were meant to torpedo Russia — but they may end up doing it a favor.

I sent the article to Pater Tenebrarum at Acting Man. He replied:

It seems Medvedev and his free-market economic advisors have convinced Putin to do just that. It was not reported in the Western press, but a few months ago Putin announced that all inspections of companies will be suspended for at least three years and that company start-ups will be free of taxation for their first two years. Add to that the 13% flat tax, and there could be quite an effect. According to Medvedev's advisors, Russian GDP could improve by $200 billion per year by curbing corruption alone. Since the inspections were the main avenue of corruption, their suspension is a very significant step. Admittedly, the jury is still out on the success of these measures, but they have been taken, and it was in reaction to the sanctions. Also, the author is correct: industry surveys in Russia show that companies see import substitution as a huge growth area over the coming year and have accordingly already increased investment and production.

I bought into Russia near the peak of the panic, but not enough. I have plans to add more.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares of Yandex (YNDX - Get Report) were gaining 13.4% to $20.31 on heavy trading volume Wednesday as the ruble strengthened against the dollar.

The Russian ruble rebounded 20% against the U.S. dollar in April, according to Bloomberg. The Russian currency strengthened as a result of rising oil prices and Russia's truce in Ukraine, according to the news service.

The ruble fell below 50:1 against the dollar Wednesday afternoon after reaching a 79:1 exchange rate in December.

Yandex is an Internet company based in Moscow that offers search, email, maps, and video services to its users.

About 8.8 million shares of the Russian search company were traded by 3:43 p.m. Wednesday, above the company's average trading volume of about 3.6 million shares a day.
