Graphene control cutting using an atomic force microscope based nanorobot

May 28, 2012

The electrical properties of graphene strongly rely on its size, geometry and edge structure. Therefore, the ability of fabricating graphene into desired configuration is one of the enabled techniques to manufacture graphene-based nanodevices and push it into practical applications..

Mal gucken, was der Tag heute so bringt!

Graphite Foam for a Denser, Lighter Battery

Somewhere between graphite and graphene there is graphite foam. The more complicated name for this material is ultrathin and ultra-light graphite foam (UGF) and it includes lithium iron phosphate (LFP). The UGF-LFP combination makes for a superior cathode in lithium batteries. Researchers at the University of Texas in Austin, where UGF is being developed, noted that a UGF-LFP cathode has 23% more conductive capacity than an Aluminum/LFP cathode – which is the variety most commonly used for this application (Nickel foil can also be used). UGF is also said to possess better electrochemical stability qualities when compared to Al and Ni foils, the most common varieties of conductive sub-strata in Li-ion batteries. UGF can be produced cheaply and easily and it corresponds well with most electrochemical materials. Scientists developing UGF said that the material has higher energy density than Aluminum or Nickel..

Grüß dich Vzt,

zeitlich wieder etw. entlastet? ;-)

@ Volumen.

"..A high power or energy density is very desirable in a battery as it helps to limit volume requirements. Thicker cathodes have been used to increase energy density. Well, no more, graphite foam solves this problem, which means that smaller, lighter and more powerful batteries will be available.."

Hey Carpe,

"..This is manna from the sky for manufacturers of laptops and automobiles. The volume savings will also allow for more aesthetic and design eccentricities as well as greater efficiency and charge holding properties. In addition; graphite foam does not corrode as aluminum would, which means batteries using UGF cathodes cannot self-discharge. The use of graphite foam to make electrodes is still in at the research phase, but its low cost suggests commercial applications are not far away.."

Dann entspann dich mal ein wenig!

@ USA-Feiertag.

'Doping' improves graphene solar cell efficiency

May 28, 2012 (Source: EE Times India) -- Doping graphene with trifluoromethanesulfonyl-amide (TFSA) has allowed researchers at University of Florida to achieve a record breaking 8.6 per cent efficiency for graphene solar cells..

"..Graphene and silicon, when they come together, form what is called a Schottky junction—a one-way street for electrons that when illuminated with light, acts as the power conversion zone for an entire class of solar cells. Schottky junctions are commonly formed by layering a metal on top of a semiconductor. But researchers at the UF Nanoscience Institute for Medical and Engineering Technologies discovered in 2011 that graphene, a semi-metal, made a suitable substitute for metal in creating the junction.

"The dopant makes the graphene film more conductive and increases the electric field potential inside the cell," said Xiaochang Miao, a graduate student in the physics department, University of Florida. "That makes it more efficient at converting sunlight into electricity. And unlike other dopants that have been tried in the past, TFSA is stable—its effects are long lasting."

Graphene ‘quilts’ cool down transistors

May 28, 2012 - (Source: nanotechweb.org) -- High-power gallium nitride transistors, which often suffer from overheating, could be cooled down using graphene-graphite “quilts” – patchwork structures of coating made from carbon. So say researchers at the University of California at Riverside who have shown that the temperature of hot spots in the transistors can be lowered by as much as 20°, something that increases the lifetimes of the devices ten-fold..

The Critical Metals Report Interview with Stephen Riddle (5/29/12) "Another area that produces good-quality graphite is Québec. . .we know the quality of the graphite in that whole region, the size of the flakes and that it separates well. We also know that it typically runs about 8% of the ore. Four or five different Canadian companies have picked up claims in [the Lac-des-Îles] area. One of them is Standard Graphite Corp."

Morning Coffee (5/17/12) "At its River property, Standard Graphite Corp. reported the results of the recently completed electro-magnetic survey, which outlined a well-defined conductor in association with meta-sedimentary rocks, suggesting the presence of near-surface graphitic occurrence over a horizon extending several kilometers."

Ron Struthers, Struthers Resource Stock Report (5/7/12) "Standard Graphite Corp. has strong management and a large property portfolio with one advanced project in Quebec, just 24M shares outstanding."

IBM Shows Olympic Graphene Molecule - The smallest logo, for the greatest games on Earth – brought to life by IBM Research in Zurich

May 28, 2012 (Source: Tech Week Europe) --

IBM Research has got into the Olympic spirit, helping to create images of the smallest Olympic logo that can ever be made: a graphene molecule consisting of five carbon rings.

Olympicene, the smallest molecule containing five carbon rings, was synthesised by Ben Moreton, a PhD student at the University of Warwick, after the project was suggested by the Royal Society of Chemistry’s vice president Antony Williams..
