SunPower Corporation (SPWRA - Snapshot Report) won a contract from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District (“SRVUSD”) board of education to install high efficiency solar power systems totaling more than 3 megawatts (MW) at six schools in the district. Construction will be completed by the end of fiscal 2011.
SRVUSD encompasses the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, and San Ramon as well as a small portion of the cities of Walnut Creek and Pleasanton. The district comprises 34 schools serving more than 28,000 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.
SRVUSD will finance the purchase of the systems using low interest bearing Qualified School Construction Bonds (QSCBs) available as a result of the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). QSCBs allow schools to borrow at cheap rates for equipping, rehabilitation, and repair.
SunPower estimates the solar power generated by its solar power systems will offset an average of 80% of the electricity costs at each of the six schools, achieving an estimated savings of more than $2 million annually.
Headquartered in San Jose, California, SunPower designs, develops, manufactures, markets and sells high-performance solar electric power technology products, systems and services worldwide for residential, commercial and utility-scale power plant customers.
SunPower’s semiconductor-based solar cells and solar panels, which convert sunlight into electricity, are manufactured using proprietary processes and technologies.
The future of SunPower appears strong, given the revival of the alternative energy industry – specifically solar power energy – higher captive generation of panels, rising average conversion efficiency, declining silicon costs and assured silicon supply. Furthermore, state RPS requirements, stimulus plan and ITC grant underscore the SunPower story in the U.S.
In fiscal 2010, SunPower expects revenues in the range of $2.00 billion – $2.25 billion, with an adjusted EPS of $1.25 – $1.65. However the Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2010 presently stands at 82 cents with downward revisions all the way. We are apprehensive of the near-term performance of the company due to oversupply of modules in the market, subsidy risk in Germany and Italy, foreign currency risk, and the volatile economic environment in Europe.
SunPower generated 53% of its revenue from European customers in fiscal 2009. Per company estimates, a 10% change in the euro exchange rate would have impacted its revenue by approximately $81 million in fiscal 2009.
SunPower is also trading at a premium compared with its peers such as Solarfun Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (SOLF - Snapshot Report), JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (JASO - Analyst Report) and China Sunergy Co. Ltd. (CSUN - Snapshot Report), based on forward earnings estimates. The above peers, we believe, are more promising in the near term compared with the Zacks Rank #3 (“Hold”) SunPower stock.

In oil spill shadow, Obama pledges energy bill push

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama pledged on Wednesday to find support in the U.S. Senate for a bill that overhauls energy policy, using the Gulf of Mexico oil spill to advance his efforts to boost production of renewable fuels.

'The votes may not be there right now, but I intend to find them in the coming months,' Obama said in advance excerpts of a speech he will deliver later in Pittsburgh, referring to a bill that is languishing in the Senate.

'I will make the case for a clean energy future wherever I can, and I will work with anyone from either party to get this done. But we will get this done,' he said in the excerpts.

NEW YORK, June 9 (Reuters) - Demand for photovoltaic solar power systems is strong and continues to grow, although the large utility market continues to lag, the chief executive of SunPower Corp said on Wednesday.

Like other makers of the renewable power system, U.S. market leader SunPower has been hoping for strong growth in demand for large-scale, multi-megawatt solar projects, although the country continues to lag European growth.

'Large-scale developments in utility are happening maybe slower than planned,' Chief Executive Tom Werner told Reuters at a Lazard Capital Markets energy conference.

'It's still really a 2011 or beyond development,' he added, noting the residential rooftop and commercial markets remained robust.

Those markets are largely dependent on state and federal incentives, which have supported steady growth in recent years, although the projects tend to be much smaller than the utility projects.

The U.S. photovoltaic market was less than 10 percent of the global market last year, far behind Germany, where more than half the new solar modules were sold.

On Tuesday, SunPower announced it would build a 9.1 megawatt solar power plant in Spain for the Naturener Group, its fifth project for the group.

Goldman Sachs - SunPower Ersteinschätzung

14:46 28.06.10

(Analyse vom 28.06.10)

Mayor Daley and Exelon CEO Dedicate Nation's Largest Urban Solar Power Plant on South Side
34th Ward Alderman Carrie Austin, SunPower executives, government officials and community leaders on hand to announce the completion of the Exelon City Solar facility

CHICAGO, Jul 21, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley joined Exelon Chairman and CEO John Rowe and other local dignitaries on Chicago's South Side today to dedicate Exelon City Solar, the nation's largest urban solar power plant. Exelon transformed a 41-acre site in the West Pullman neighborhood from a former industrial brownfield property that had been vacant for more than 30 years into a source of clean, renewable energy -- and pride for the community.

"I want to thank Exelon and SunPower for their vision and their commitment to Chicago. This project is a great example of the good things that happen when government and the private sector work together," Daley said.

The $60 million project's 32,292 solar photovoltaic panels convert the sun's rays into more than 14,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year -- enough to meet the annual energy requirements of up to 1,500 average homes while generating zero carbon emissions. Exelon Generation owns and operates the 10-megawatt plant and will market the electricity it generates.

"This state-of-the-art demonstration facility will give Exelon valuable insights into the solar market, deliver a real environmental benefit for Chicago by adding clean energy to the grid, and enhance the neighboring community by beautifying a brownfield and improving safety for local residents," Rowe said.

Exelon City Solar supports Mayor Daley's Chicago Climate Action Plan and efforts to create a lasting environmental legacy for the city's residents. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's system for calculating emission savings, Exelon City Solar will displace approximately 31.2 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually, equivalent to taking more than 2,500 cars off the road.

Exelon City Solar advances the company's efforts to actively address climate change through Exelon 2020, an environmental and business strategy to reduce, offset or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. This is an amount greater than the company's 2001 carbon footprint and equivalent to taking nearly 3 million cars off the road.

Construction on the site began in July 2009, with commercial operation commencing in December 2009 and final site work completed this month. SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWRA, SPWRB),a manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, solar panels and solar systems, designed, manufactured and installed the system.

"SunPower solar plants are welcomed by our communities, including those on urban industrial sites like Exelon City Solar," said SunPower Executive Vice President Julie Blunden. "With our high-efficiency, high-capacity factor solar technology, Exelon City Solar maximizes energy delivered to the grid throughout the day by using SunPower trackers. Today, SunPower's solar photovoltaic technology can be implemented anywhere and at any scale -- from rooftops to utility-scale power plants."

The project spurred local economic development as it created more than 200 construction jobs, with a least half of all work hours filled by Chicago residents. Additionally, approximately 44 percent of contractors working on the project were minority-owned businesses, and steel tubing and other construction materials were sourced from companies on Chicago's South Side.

The full list of speakers at today's press conference follows:

   * Doyle Beneby, president, Exelon Power
   * Alderman Carrie Austin, 34th Ward, City of Chicago
   * Mayor Richard M. Daley, City of Chicago
   * John Rowe, chairman and CEO, Exelon Corporation
   * Julie Blunden, executive vice president for public policy and corporate communications, SunPower Corp.
   * Larry Huggins, president and CEO, Riteway-Huggins Construction

Exelon Corporation is one of the nation's largest electric utilities with more than $17 billion in annual revenues. The company has one of the industry's largest portfolios of electricity generation capacity, with a nationwide reach and strong positions in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Exelon distributes electricity to approximately 5.4 million customers in northern Illinois and southeastern Pennsylvania and natural gas to approximately 486,000 customers in the Philadelphia area. Exelon is headquartered in Chicago and trades on the NYSE under the ticker EXC.

SunPower Partners with Solar Ventures to Build 11.1 Megawatts in Piedmont Region of Italy

MILAN, July 22, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWRA, SPWRB) and Solar Ventures S.r.l., a developer of solar parks in Italy, France and the Mediterranean area, today announced that they have signed a contract to design and build three solar power plants in the Piedmont region of Italy. Totaling 11.1 megawatts over 30 hectares, the development represents one of the largest solar power developments in the region. Construction on the plants will start this month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

"We are delighted to partner with Solar Ventures to deliver reliable, emission-free solar power to the community and continue the rapid expansion of the Italian solar market," said Mario Riello, EMEA Sales Director for SunPower Utility and Power Plants division. "This project reinforces SunPower's impressive track record in Italy where both development partners and financing institutions praise our bankability, high performance technology, and project execution."

On fixed-tilt, ground-mounted systems, SunPower will mount standard-efficiency solar panels, including SunPower Serengeti panels, which offer the same high quality, reliable energy delivery and 25-year warranty as SunPower's high-efficiency panel offerings.

"Solar Ventures built its first photovoltaic plant in Piedmont in 2007, where we have experienced excellent community and administration support for solar park development, as well as good irradiance levels," said Michele Appendino, CEO and chairman of Solar Ventures. "We have therefore decided to focus our development efforts in this region, where we have other similar clusters of plants under construction this year. We are happy to work with SunPower, whose technology will deliver clean and renewable solar power for many years to come."

Worldwide, SunPower has more than 550 megawatts of solar power systems installed or under contract, including more than 200 megawatts of operational power plants in Europe.
