Akamai math wizards make portfolio subtractions
By Tim McLaughlin
BOSTON, April 4 (Reuters) - Two MIT scientists who created math formulas to speed Internet traffic have unloaded about 14 percent of their holdings in struggling Akamai Technologies Inc. , the company they created to market their ideas, U.S. regulatory filings show.

Akamai Chief Scientist Thomson Leighton and Chief Technology Officer Daniel Lewin each sold about 1.3 million shares in a steady stream since April 2000, netting them about $52 million apiece, according to a series of filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

In that time, Akamai shares have lost about 96 percent of their value.

Akamai, which is slashing jobs and capital spending to stay afloat, has seen its shares plummet from a high of nearly $328 shortly after its October 1999 initial public offering to $6 at Wednesday's close on Nasdaq.

The shares were up 1-3/16 at $7-3/16 on Thursday afternoon.

Akamai may have been launched on complicated math formulas, but now the company's fate rests on a simple plan of subtractions to conserve cash as its business growth slows.

Akamai, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, whose services speed the delivery of Web pages, on Wednesday said it was eliminating 14 percent of its work force and slashing the high-end of its 2001 revenue forecast by 24 percent.

If Akamai operations fail to generate positive cash flow in 2002, it risks running out of money in 2003, according to cash-burn scenarios given by the company.

Hatched inside a lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Akamai's services use a series of algorithms developed chiefly by Leighton and Lewin to route Web content around Internet bottlenecks. Leighton believed that algorithms could be used to create a network of distributed servers that could communicate as a system and could deliver content without depending on a centralized controlling core. Leighton, a professor of applied mathematics on leave from the MIT, co-founded Akamai with Lewin, one of his graduate students. Both men work at Akamai full time. A company spokesman said they were unavailable for comment.

AMONG LARGEST STOCKHOLDERS

In the early days of Akamai, Leighton and Lewin relied on a dozen or so MIT undergraduates to get Internet heavyweights such as Yahoo Inc. to try their service on a trial basis.

Venture capital firms then got wind of Leighton and Lewin's idea and shored them up with cash and management expertise, bringing in George Conrades, a veteran IBM executive, to head the company. Leighton and Lewin remain among Akamai's largest stockholders, owning 7.9 million shares and 8 million shares, respectively, according to SEC records. In 1998, they each received about 5.7 million initial shares in Akamai that cost about a penny for each share, SEC documents show.

On Oct. 29, 1999, when the dust settled after Akamai's IPO, then the fourth-largest ever gain on first-day trading on the Nasdaq, the math whizzes were billionaires on paper as Wall Street salivated over their algorithms. On Thursday, their combined holdings were worth a total of about $111 million.

After the IPO, Akamai spent tens of millions building out a network of thousands of servers to deliver Web pages and broadcasts such as rock concerts over the Internet. The firm posted a net loss of $885 million last year and expects a cash loss of as much as $120 million in 2001.

Akamai executives say they have to slash costs to conserve cash while juggling large fixed expenses and slowing revenue growth. They expect full-year revenue this year to be $175 million to $190 million, down from a previous estimate of $240 million and $250 million.

Besides cutting jobs, Akamai will reduce capital spending to $75 million to $85 million, compared with previous guidance of $100 million to $120 million.

Before Akamai's stock began its rapid descent last year, the company tapped investor enthusiasm to help raise $320 million in cash from financing activities.

Akamai ended 2000 with $386 million in cash and securities, but its cash burn rate for 2001 could be as much as $240 million, Akamai Chief Financial Officer Timothy Weller said in a statement.

"For 2003, we expect to be free cash flow positive," Weller said in a statement released Wednesday. "Combining these facts, we arrive at a plan that is fully funded."

Akamai Technologies Fourth-Quarter Profit Nearly Doubles to $25.8M on Sharp Rise in Revenue

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- Akamai Technologies Inc., a maker of Web-publishing software, said Wednesday its profit almost doubled last quarter due to a sharp rise in revenue.

Quarterly income jumped to $25.8 million, or 16 cents per share, from $13.4 million, or 10 cents, the year before. The latest-quarter earnings just beat the mean estimate of 15 cents per share from analysts polled by Thomson Financial.

Revenue totaled $82.7 million, a 44 percent gain from $57.6 million a year earlier and topping the consensus estimate of $79 million. Akamai said the number of customers under long-term services contracts at the end of the quarter was up by 80 to 1,910, a 4 percent increase over the third period. This recurring customer base expanded 46 percent in 2005 as more industries adopted Internet-based functions, the company said.

For all of 2005, earnings surged to $328 million, or $2.11 per share, reflecting a $257.6 million gain from the release of a tax reserve. That compares with income of $34.4 million, or 25 cents, in 2004. Revenue grew 35 percent to $283.1 million.

Shares of Akamai surged $1.75, or 8 percent, in electronic after-hours activity after closing at $22 on the Nasdaq.

Akamai Web Application Accelerator Selected by InspireWorks for ''Extending the Reach to Teach'' Portal

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Mar 29, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Online Learning Portal Provides Easier Way to Collaborate; Intensifying Learning Curve and Meeting State and National Standards

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, today announced that InspireWorks, a software and technology company that provides digital multimedia applications, has selected Akamai's Web Application Accelerator solutions to enhance the speed, security and scalability of its online education portal. Using the InspireWorks portal, educators, students, parents and administrators can intelligently create, control, view, and share information, such as lesson plans, diagnostic assessments and targeted tutorials, and track individual student academic goals in real time - driving efficiency into online learning.

In conjunction with the launch last week of its after-school and home learning program, "Extending the Reach to Teach," InspireWorks will harness the power of technology to support the unique program being rolled out nationwide, initially in six states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, California and Georgia. InspireWorks' advanced portal tracks the educational progress and goals of an individual, school or entire school district - all via one integrated online application.

"Our goal to build a fast, reliable and secure online academic environment to advance education and provide a positive online learning experience for students has come to fruition," said Jim Tagliareni, President and Founder, InspireWorks. "By year end, we expect our current user base to grow up to 500,000 and we'll need to maintain a high quality user experience during this growth."

Akamai's Web Application Accelerator is an innovative solution that improves the performance of Web-based enterprise applications, enabling companies to perform critical business processes in a more secure, controllable environment. Through Akamai's network of more than 18,000 servers worldwide, users of InspireWorks' online education portal will gain increased productivity as a result of decreased application latency, regardless of where its users are located. Akamai also delivers capacity on demand, eliminating InspireWorks' need to make significant investments in additional infrastructure to handle peak periods of application usage.

"By utilizing Akamai's Web Application Accelerator solution, InspireWorks will be able to provide students and administrators with the speed and efficiency they need to learn and share information more easily and collaboratively," said Robert Hughes, Executive Vice President, Global Sales, Services and Marketing, Akamai. "Our proven Web Application Accelerator solution will enable InspireWorks to differentiate itself from other online educational tools and at the same time make the extended learning experience more productive."

InspireWorks is uniquely positioned to facilitate the collection and dissemination of student achievement data through its unique five-phase prescriptive process. InspireWorks will be able to run a user base for all 48.4 million public school students, 20 million parents and households, and 3.7 million public school teachers, aides and school administrators in the U.S. InspireWorks' immediate focus is to provide education applications and content to inner city students on a subscription basis, giving them on-demand access to interactive and targeted tutorials based on their personalized academic achievement data and profiles.

Akamai already supports many universities with similar networking tools including more than 200 engineering and applied science graduate courses in seven master's programs offered worldwide.
