Rakuten Marketing’s answer is that there should be advertising-funded video on demand (AVOD) services available, so that consumers can watch what they like on whichever channel they want, they just have to watch some ads to do it.

While a marketing company such as Rakuten would say that, it does have a point. If you really like something – or really cannot stand the ads – then you subscribe. If you are more of a digital dabbler in some content, then you’d probably suffer through some ads.

The idea is gaining some credence and consumers are increasingly becoming aware of what AVOD can offer. According to Rakuten, 37% of UK consumers are aware of AVOD offerings. 74% believe their use of AVOD will remain at the level established during lockdown and 60% say they are likely to sign up to AVOD offerings when the service is described to them.

For those consumers that watch major sporting events, now presents an exciting moment as the broadcast of football, golf and horseracing starts again with the easing of lockdown. Across Europe, 26% would be interested in streaming sport on an AVOD service, placing this ahead of all other streaming options, including pay-per-view and monthly subscription services.

Rakuten Rewards on Monday announced an effort to bring its Cash Back program to Samsung Galaxy owners, making it easier to get cash back, lower prices and other discounts when shopping online via the Samsung Internet browser.

It’s one of many projects Dana Marineau oversees as CMO at Rakuten Rewards.

Marineau, who says the company’s name means “optimism in Japanese,” joined the company in June after two-and-a-half years as vice president of brand, creative and communications at Credit Karma and prior to that, 15 years at Electronic Arts in various roles.

At Rakuten, Marineau leads several teams, including branded, media, performance, creative, strategy, and analytics.

Talking with Marineau, you’ll find her personal and work ethics intersect. Search & Performance Marketing Daily spoke with Marineau about her experience and the unique elements in her life that make it all work well.

A cheaper Kobo has arrived

By Chaim Gartenberg@cgartenberg  Jul 15, 2020, 12:01am EDT

But the comparison to Kobo’s own products is less important than how the Nia matches up against Amazon’s Kindle lineup. And while the $99.99 Nia costs $10 more than Amazon’s $89.99 entry-level Kindle, it does offer a better bang for your buck. The base Kindle still has an unfortunately low-resolution display (at 147 ppi) and offers just half the storage of the Nia (which has 8GB of onboard memory, versus 4GB on the 2019 Kindle).

It’s a tougher choice compared to Amazon’s latest Paperwhite model, though, which matches the Nia on storage, has an even better 300 ppi display, and offers IPX8 waterproofing. At $129.99, it’s markedly more expensive than either the Nia or the Clara HD, but it can regularly be found on sale for as low as $84.99, which makes the choice a bit harder.

The Kobo Nia will be available on July 21st, with preorders starting today.

Best free video calling apps 2020: Keep in touch with friends or colleagues
2 July 2020

Analysis
Viber

The best Skype alternative

Viber is a comprehensive alternative to Skype. It was primarily a service for calling directly between devices, but it now also has WhatsApp style chat and can be used to share files.
One of the great things about Viber is how widely available it is across platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Windows 8, Mac and more. That means video calling across devices or chatting using IM with emoticons should be seamless and simple. Plus it's all free.

July 5, 2020 - The Croatian media has started to take an interest in the Total Croatia Travel INFO Viber community. An interview with one of its founders by Netokracija

What kind of information is the most interesting for foreigners?

The really simple things such as can I come to Croatia? The lack of transparent information is breathtaking for an industry which is 20% of Croatia's GDP. We have had a lot of questions from North Americans wanting to find out how to visit Croatia, Brits on air bridges, the driving experience with borders throughout Europe, testing, quarantine, help with the entercroatia.mup.hr form, unmarried partners of Croatian citizens, border questions. A broad mix. It has been a very interesting exercise, with many community members posting their real-life travel experiences, so that we actually have the most up-to-date situation online regarding travel to Croatia right now.

It is now in 24 languages, so very helpful for all our tourists, and updated in real time. Viber told us that we had 100,000 visits in the first month - big thanks to the team who helped me with this. It has been a great learning experience.

Why Viber? Why not a Facebook group?

On May 17, Macan and I went to Bregana to see what was happening on the border as there was no information, and our readers were asking questions. Full respect to MUP, they were doing an incredible job (and continue to do so), but tourists were being turned away as they did not have paid accommodation. I asked Macan why we did not have a Viber account such as the excellent koronavirus.hr updates. He suggested we create one ourselves. I laughed, explaining I was such a technology champion that I did not know how to download Viber onto my desktop. He told me to come to his office in two days.

There I sat with him and two interns. Within 20 minutes, the community was live, within an hour we had our Infographic, and within 2 hours we had 500 community members. And there were asking questions. Mostly in Hungarian. Macan showed me the Viber auto-translate feature, and there I was, two hours after watching one of the interns downloading Viber to my laptop, answering travel questions in Hungarian. My kids thought it was the funniest thing ever. And then a Hungarian community member asked if we could have the infographic in Hungarian. I asked the community for a volunteer translator. By the end of the day, the infographic was in 12 languages. The next day, the daily update was available in 24 languages. And the questions were getting answered in all languages. The questions showed us where the confusion was, so I produced articles of explanation on each issue, then added those links to the daily update. And so now the questions are less, and other community members are also helping with the answers.

Watch parties and K-pop. How San Mateo streamer Rakuten Viki is growing in a pandemic
By NAOMI KLINGE
JULY 22, 2020
9:33 AM

The streaming service, which offers free and paid tiers, has surged in popularity this year. The company said it now has more than 15 million subscribers globally (including those watching free with ads), up 50% from a year ago.

While many streamers have seen increased traffic since the COVID-19 pandemic locked people in their homes, Rakuten Viki has capitalized on the rising demand for Korean content and become a go-to streaming site for East Asian television shows and films. In the last year, U.S. demand for Korean-language content has grown by 66%, according to the L.A.-based research firm Parrot Analytics.
“The trend in the Korean wave actually began over 20 years ago, and it’s been building for many years leading up to the recent breakthrough,” Rakuten Viki Chief Executive Sam Wu said. “So we’ve been seeing that growing appetite in Asian content firsthand here.”

Rakuten Viki uses a tiered subscription system, offering free content with ads and monthly subscriptions of $4.17 or $8.33.

Although it targets a global audience, Rakuten Viki has a big following in the U.S., where it attracted 5 million users in the last month. The company has more than 100 employees with offices in Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo and Singapore.

Viber vs WhatsApp: Which One is Better Suited to Your Needs in 2020
By Yasir Nawaz

June 3, 2020

5 Mins Read

Despite being a bit of a late entrant into the market, Viber has been quick to carve out a market share for itself. One of the primary reasons for its success in such a competitive market is the sheer number of functions it can offer. When it comes to Viber vs WhatsApp, the debate of which is easier to use is endless. However, Viber does have the upper hand when it comes to multifunctionality.

For instance, Viber allows users to carry out multiple types of communications such as in groups, communities, and entire broadcast lists. While WhatsApp can offer all these in one form or another, it is nowhere near as straightforward as Viber.

Every Kuna Counts: Croatian Renters Choosing to Advertise for Free on Social Media, Viber

July 19, 2020 - In the corona era, an increasing number of Croatian renters are choosing to advertise their holiday rentals in Facebook groups and on Viber, avoiding intermediaries and various agency fees.

In the Viber group 'Croatia Last Minute Deals', you can find information about last-minute prices of individual accommodation, get in touch directly with the renters and bypass the commissions of intermediaries. The group has gathered more than 2,000 members in a few days, and is backed by well-known communication expert and PR strategist Kresimir Macan and Paul Bradbury of Total Croatia News.

"Paul and I went to the Slovenian border on May 17 to see who could enter Croatia, because there was a lot of misinformation, after which we launched a Croatia travel update so that foreigners could be informed promptly, with valid information before arriving in Croatia. Since May 17, Croatia Travel Update has been opened more than 100,000 times, so we then opened the community koronavirus.hr, which at one time had more than half a million people. We then opened Croatia Last Minute Deals on Viber in an hour at my office. We do all this without money, voluntarily. We are doing it to save the season and we feel like we’re doing something good. The two of us work the most and we have two interns helping us. And why are Viber communities simple? Everyone has Viber and everyone knows how to send messages... We even have stickers. We were contacted by a woman who filled all of her apartments in this way. Here, we are fulfilling the promise of HDZ that it will create a platform for people to rent without a commission," Macan said with a smile.

In the Viber community 'Croatia Last Minute Deals', Macan notes that anyone can enter and leave the group whenever they want. And it is continuously growing.
