PCCW <1186.HK) says to announce JV at 1600 (0800G)
HONG KONG, April 12 (Reuters) - Hong Kong Internet firm Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) said on Wednesday it would announce a "significant" telecommunications joint venture with an international partner at a news conference at 1600 local time (0800 GMT).
PCCW said in a statement that Chairman Richard Li would make the announcement and answer questions at the news conference. PCCW shares were suspended before trade began on Wednesday after closing down HK$0.30 on Tuesday at HK$15.40.
Earlier, PCCW said it was in talks with Australian telecommunications giant Telstra Corp Ltd. Telstra confirmed it was in advanced talks with PCCW on an Asia-Pacific alliance and said the key feature of the deal would be pooling regional assets and cash in joint ventures.
Telstra said in Sydney that any deal was conditional on PCCW completing its bid for Hong Kong's biggest telecommunications company, Cable & Wireless HKT.
The Australian Financial Review newspaper said Telstra planned to form a strategic alliance with PCCW worth up to A$5 billion (US$2.98 billion).
Telstra was trading on Wednesday at around A$7.64 from Tuesday's close of A$7.52.
