"There are about five more banks but I cannot disclose their names. It will be a mixture of local and foreign banks," he said when asked about other banks that might issue such cards.
As of now, MBF Cards (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, RHB Bank Bhd and Southern Bank Bhd will soon offer the "contactless" payment feature that provides consumers with a fast and convenient alternative to cash for their small everyday purchase.
PayPass allows cardholders to "tap & go" at merchant outlets around the world that are equipped with PayPass readers, Cheah said.
The MasterCard PayPass card combines both contact and contactless EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) payment solution on one chip, he said.
He added that with the card, consumers need not swipe a card, fumble for cash or coins or sign any receipts for purchases under RM110.
Payments above the limit will, however, have to go through the normal procedures.
"We expect the take-up rate in Malaysia to be pretty good as it has always been a hotbed for new innovations. Our consumers are also very sophisticated," Cheah told Bernama after the launching ceremony of the Mastercard PayPass card by Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He, however, declined to elaborate though MasterCard International is optimistic about PayPass-featured card take-up rate in Malaysia.
He said the uptake for contactless payments has undoubtedly been encouraging.
As at December 2005, there were more than 4.3 million MasterCard PayPass cards and fobs in circulation around the world, with about 25,000 merchants terminalised to accept PayPass cards.
This momentum, according to Cheah, indicated that issuing banks, merchants and cardholders are seeing the benefits of PayPass and the idea of "tap & go".
Going forward, he said contactless payments are expected to gain greater momentum, not only regionally but across the world.
In Malaysia, merchants that accept the PayPass card include Carrefour Group, Econsave, Pasaraya Green, KLIA Express Link, Airport Limo, Starbucks Coffee, San Franciso Coffee, Haagen-Dazs, Padini Corporation, Seed Corporation, Isetan and Berjaya Times Square Cosmo World Theme Park.

The Royal Bank of Scotland this summer will launch a UK pilot of MasterCard International's contactless PayPass technology, Alexander Labak, president of MasterCard's European unit, announced yesterday at a debit card conference in Monaco. MasterCard disclosed RBS's plans for the pilot as part of a new initiative by the card association to promote cards for low-value payments in Europe, especially in connection with MasterCard's Maestro debit brand. MasterCard will also launch an advertising campaign promoting Maestro for low-value payments. "For us all, low-value transactions are the next debit frontier," Labak says, noting that MasterCard research shows that European consumers make 80% of their payments, or 180 billion transactions per year, with cash. MasterCard is targeting payments of between five and 15 euros, he says. The card association proposes using PayPass, as well as debit or credit cards with a contact smart card chip, to capture these payments. The payments, either contact or contactless, would comply with the international EMV payment standard and would be conducted offline. However, after a preset limit is reached, the contact cards would go online for authorization. MasterCard declined to release details of the RBS pilot but says it will be the first in Europe to "drive" low-value payments under the new MasterCard initiative. MasterCard says it will place a new acceptance mark on POS terminals, including those at quick-service merchant outlets and vending machines, which will be different from the PayPass logo displayed at POS terminals in the U.S., where consumers can pay with a tap of their contactless cards or key fobs. This is to recognize that the terminals can also take low-value payments from cards with a contact chip. The advertising campaign, titled, "Maestro. The New Cash," will debut in the UK in a couple of weeks. (2006-02-08)
MasterCard and Citigroup wil pay for a six-month pilot program on the New York City subways this spring that will allow riders to pay for their trip by waving a smart card rather than swiping a MetroCard.
Only PayPass cards and payment tags issued by Citibank will be used in the pilot program which will be set up at turnstiles in 23 stations between Bowling Green and 125th Street on the 4, 5 and 6 lines; at the Jay Street-Borough Hall station on the A, C and F lines in Brooklyn; and at the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station on the E and V lines in Queens, according to the New York Times.
MasterCard PayPass has an embedded microchip and radio antenna and is already accepted at some fast-food restaurants, drug stores, gas stations, movie theaters and parking lots. The PayPass comes in either a tag that can be attached to a keychain or a standard credit-card size.
PayPass users will get the same 20 percent discount as with a regular MetroCard, (every sixth ride is free,) but the special cards will not allow a free transfer to city buses, which the MetroCard does.

According to a televised conference of the Ministry of Public Security, by the end of 2005, about 102 million new ID cards had been issued to residents since the massive renewal project kicked off last year.
The renewal had been launched in cities like Beijing, Shanghai,Tianjin, and 13 provinces like Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang last year, said vice minister Liu Jinguo.
Liu said over 19 provinces have completed the update of population information, while 13 regions have set up population data and 41,000 local police stations have established a data management system, all benefiting the renewal project.
The newly released plastic chip ID card contains information such as validity periods, authorization institutions and designs of the national emblem. The Great Wall and decorative patterns are printed on the front cover. The card holder's name, gender, ethnicity, birthday, residence, ID number and photo are on the back cover.
China decided to change the first-generation ID card for its quality and security flaws and unrecognizability by computers.
Liu warned local police offices not to charge additional fees in renewing ID cards, while asking them to make full use of this chance to strengthen the local population information management.
The project to upgrade ID cards for 800 million Chinese adults is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2008. Enditem
