Reuters reported that Western Copper will consider a sale or JV on its flagship Casino copper gold project in Canada's Yukon Territory after it completes an updated pre feasibility study on the project next month.

Mr Paul West Sells president and COO Western Copper said that “A project of this magnitude, Western Copper won't be able to build or operate on its own. So either selling the project outright or partnering with a strong operator are both options going forward. West Sells believes the project which has about eight million ounces in measured and indicated gold resources, 4.4 billion pounds of copper and 474 million pounds of molybdenum could attract the interest of both base metal and gold miners.”

He said that “When we finish the updated pre feasibility study there is a window there when it would make sense for us to have a hard look to see if we can get value by selling the project or finding a strong partner. The company could also choose to further lower risks from the Casino project, conducting a full feasibility study before deciding on a possible sale or JV.”

The Vancouver based exploration company is also very encouraged by preliminary indications from an updated pre feasibility study.

bauspezifischen Materialien stark ansteigen.

Einbau in elektronische Geräte gelten.

Company needs clarity before Carmacks Copper proceeds

The Carmacks Copper Project is far from dead, says the president of Western Copper Corp.

By Chuck Tobin on February 28, 2011 at 4:59 pm

The Carmacks Copper Project is far from dead, says the president of Western Copper Corp.

Paul West-Sells said the company will go forward with the project proposal despite last Thursday’s Yukon Supreme Court decision upholding the Yukon Water Board’s rejection of its application for a water licence.

At the very least, said West-Sells, Western Copper was hoping the decision would provide more clarity regarding the Yukon’s regulatory regime.

He said the company plans to sit down with representatives of the Yukon government and the different regulatory agencies to determine how the company should go about resubmitting its application.

And there is still the option of appealing the 54-page ruling by Justice Ron Veale, West-Sells pointed out, adding it’s too early to say if the company will go that route.

He said Western Copper also needs a greater understanding of the territory’s regulatory structure before it decides how quickly to advance its much larger Casino project.

But the Carmacks Copper Project, he assured, is still very much alive, and the company president suspects it will be back on track sooner rather than later.

“We are moving towards regulatory certainty, and we expect to be there fairly quickly with Carmacks Copper, and that will help us determine our approach to Casino,” West-Sells said.

Carmacks Copper was recommended for approval by the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Board (YESAB) in July 2008, two years after it received the initial application.

The Department of Energy, Mines and Resources accepted YESAB’s recommendation and issued Western Copper a quartz mining licence allowing it to proceed.

The water board, however, denied the application for a water licence last May, after seven days of public hearings earlier in the spring.

In keeping with arguments from the Little-Salmon Carmacks First Nation and others opposing the project, the water board found the proposal relied upon the use of “unproven technology.”

The decision shook both Western Copper and the exploration and mining industry in general.

The company appealed, arguing that once the government had approved the project based on YESAB’s recommendation, the water board was obligated to issue a licence, albeit with whatever terms and conditions it felt necessary to impose.

In his decision, Veale upheld the water board’s position that it is independent when it comes to deciding whether to issue a water licence.

Not only is the board independent to make its own decision, but it was also within its jurisdiction when it examined and rejected aspects of the project which had already been approved by YESAB and the government, the judge ruled.

West-Sells said there is still overlap in the territory’s regulatory regime, though he declined to be specific.

“For me, the disappointing part of this decision is that it has not added any clarity to the regulatory process in the Yukon.”

For mining companies to invest in exploration and development, they require certainty, he said.

“Now the government and the regulatory agencies are going to have to come up with some decisions themselves on what that clear path is.”

West-Sells said in the company’s assessment of the water board’s rejection in May 2010, it felt that re-working its application for a water licence would be sufficient to put the project back on track

It did not believe it would not have to start from the very beginning with YESAB again, he said, suggesting that’s still Western Copper’s view.

“We are confident we can find a clear path and re-apply,” he said.

“Our next step is to discuss the various regulatory agencies to determine what is involved in an application for a water licence.”
